More than deserved.....
Really glad I discovered this movie before the award and watched last night before the announcements.
Sebastian Stan gave an inspired performance in A DIFFERENT MAN. And definitely one of the few movies these year that dealt with societal ideals and acceptance.

Seems movies with a more personal and life-like relatable stories and message are the ones winning big....at least at the Globes.

The Globes performed generally well with these categories.

I'm really happy with myself this movie awards season with the progress I made with the awards contenders for 2024.

This time last year I was only almost up to date by the time the Oscar ceremony took place in March.

But now, I can boldly say I've watched the majority of the movies up for awards race in the first week of January!! I'm only lagging in films not yet in digital release and a couple I've downloaded but not yet watched (MARIA & GLADIATOR II). Moreover, I know I'd easily cover them in time before March 3 with the digital releases.

I can say I've watched at least a couple movies in almost all categories.

So...PROGRESS.
Will love to replicate this next Emmys season (which is decidedly harder, but I'll try).

With only FLOW, THE BRUTALIST, I'M STILL HERE, ALL WE IMAGINE AS LIGHT, THE SEED OF THE SACRED FIG I'm yet to watch on this list and a few others without digital releases.

This could be an all encompassing record breaking year. 🤭🤗

Then on to a few other less critically aligned films of 2024, and I can fully round out 2024 as a fulfilled year.

"Everybody Loves Jenifa" (2024)

You might condone this cacophony or not, but it depends on just how much you really love Jenifa tbh.....

Amidst a full house and a very busy festive period, I squeezed out time yesterday to catch something on the big screen to take the edge off. The options? This, Mufasa, or Kraven the Hunter. Appalling as a holiday lineup, btw either Hollywood is down bad, or our cinemas aren’t picking up enough titles to screen. I settled for this, which seemed like the lesser evil.

It’s everything you’d expect from a movie adapted from a TV series that thrives heavily on slapstick humor, you dare not take it seriously. The film relied heavily on an ensemble cast to draw attention, featuring cameos from Lagbaja, D’Banj, and even Hilda Bacci and her generational bunda 😩 made a stop. Sadly, there wasn’t enough plot to go around for this bloated cast.

The plot itself was disjointed, to say the least. Trust me, they basically had two separate stories: one about domestic violence in Lagos, and then...boom!...a drug war plot set in faraway Ghana. At one point, I honestly thought the cinema staff had mistakenly spliced in another movie midway, featuring the same cast.

That said, it felt a bit too early in the year to over criticize, especially for a movie like this, which didn’t promise more than it was giving. Funke Akindele, as Jenifa, retained the mannerisms, wit, and charm that made the character iconic. There was a good running gag about her broken English and a surprisingly warm love chemistry between Jenifa and Shege (played by Falz). Another standout was Layi Wasabi..I’d love to see more of him in future roles.

All in all, I laughed and got what I bargained for. Funke Akindele has paid her dues, and this feels like a fitting ode to an iconic character. It’s not her best work, but certainly not her worst (not when She Must Be Obeyed exists). If you’re a fan of Jenifa’s Diary, this will feel right at home for you, even if you aren't a fan, but you are looking for a good old laugh... then this is right in your wheelhouse.

And oh, Happy New Year, people! ☺️🎉

Seems not so bad....cos even I have been craving for some local Nigerian flavour in humour recently.

NGL, one reason I haven't been all too keen on Hollywood comedies all these years is cos I've felt I can't fully relate with their style of comedy due to cultural differences until recently. And good ol' Nollywood watching with the ever reliable Mr Ibu, Aki and Pawpaw, Odunlade Adekola and co has been the go-to especially with family and friends.

On this movie, that generational bunda 🤲🏽 and even Layi Wasabi might make me watch this for the family, but just not on the big screen.

I'm probably going for Alakada: Bad and Boujee cos some weeks ago I had a pretty good laugh and enjoyed myself watching one of the previous entry (probably Alakada Reloaded with the stüpid Broda Shaggi as Kasali on cable TV) without minding the plot which seemed good to me at the moment.

I've been subconsciously craving for Nigerian cinema lately because I noticed I've been easily increasingly joining in on the family or friends watching their Nollywood content and catching myself enjoying it. grin Me that I would be too engrossed with my phone to even care other than a quick glance.

Actually the first time in a long while seeing a Nigerian flick on the big screen and the experience was kind of nice cheesy....like the hall was packed full, and people seemed to be really enjoying it. I was doubting the figures they have been reporting that the movie has made, but after seeing that crowd, those numbers might actually be right o!.

And i think what made it enjoyable was the fact that it was a comedy with a familiar and relatable character.

And same! at your last paragraph, i actually watched more of Nollywood movies and series over the festive period and i actually enjoyed myself lol....rooting for Nollywood this 2025 even more than ever, i just know they have something for me ☺️

Hmmm.... She was a supermod about 245 million years ago. You know, I usually wonder what you look like. Let me take a guess; chocolate, average height, a little bit busty, etc. I can also guess that you have an unsmiling nature; keeps a stern face most of the time. When you like someone genuinely, you like him/her genuinely. What I can't guess is your tribe. Now, how's that?
