This a debater does by quoting, highlighting the area to puncture and countering it i.e regular way to reply on Nairaland. While this is going on the judges can take their time to go through the write ups by the debaters. And also Debaters respond to punctured areas in his earlier arguments. He may buttress further. At this time frame. 2:20 – 2:40pm – Judges post questions to debaters either based on what the debater has posted or just reasonable question within the theme. Judges should be specific as to who they are posting the questions to. E.g “Mr ...., could you expatiate what you meant by so so so? or ...., pls give examples of your claim that xxxx”. This is not compulsory. A judge that doesn’t have question to post to the debaters need not do so. 2:40 – 3:00pm – Debaters respond to questions raised by judges 3:00 – 03:20pm – 2 Questions will be entertained from the audience i.e viewers. Good day Mr. Chairman, erudite judges, the non- tiring coordinators of this event, accurate time keeper, my fellow debaters, distinguished ladies and gentlemen. It is a great honour to be part of this e-debate; the first of its kind. I am Fentoluwa representing the prestigious Kogi state university, Anyigba. I stand to register my support on the motion which says “Genius are born not made” To start with, I will try to define who a genius is. Even though, there is no mother of all definition to the word 'genius'. The Oxford Dictionary defined a genius as someone with exceptionally great intellectual or creative power or other natural ability. To American Heritage Dictionary, a genius is a person with an IQ of 140 and higher. Cambridge dictionary took the word ‘genius’ from another angle it defined a genius as a person with a great and rare natural ability or skill. Other keywords to observe in the above statement are ‘born’ and ‘made’. The former is the act of giving birth, being made means to cause to be. From the preceding definitions various facts can be deduce which are: Nature and nurture are two distinct words, making a genius means doing something unnatural, a fight with nature has never been easy. A child being born is endowed with an intuitive skill. Altering this skill by way of giving compulsory education in a different field is disastrous to the child’s happiness and confidence in life. To a guardian or parent you are putting such a child on a path to greatness, it is totally wrong. It has been reported in several cases that most of such children failed to be turn into a genius and it is more tragic to them. Although some attain success in their altered field; it is so small in proportion when comparing to failure. Geniuses involve figuring out who you are and owning yourself. Self discovery is very important in attaining the feet of a genius. You need to discover that innate gift. Emily Dickson, whose relationship with friends was carried out by correspondence, an introvert and a poet who was able to get fewer than a dozen of poems published during her brief life. Though she was hardworking, it avail her little. Her raw power of imagery and metaphor lives on. After 25 years of twin and adoption studies on over 800,000 pairs of twins and more than 50 samples. American scientist discovered that every single psychology traits is heritable, so this is a confirmation that we are born with various potentials. This also counter the belief that man was born ‘tabula rasa’ – we are born into this world as a blank slate. In a 2002 study, Dean Keith Simonton of the department of psychology, university of California, showed that the average IQ of 64 eminent scientists was around 150, far above the average IQ for the general population and higher than the variation in IQs (about 80%) according to Simonton, this IQ variation is explained by genetics. Peter Imafidon and his twin sister at age five set a record in the United Kingdom of being the youngest ever students to pass double GCSEs in ICT/Computing. They wrote the examinations with other candidates who were over twice their age. You don't need to be told, the innate potential was at work. Originality is another great attribute of a genius. The make up of a genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration and creativity. You don’t follow the populace and bandwagon and consider yourself a genius. The Nigeria entertainment industry is a good example, we have thousands of musicians. A great number of them delve into it to make money and fame without contributing a meaningful impact to it. Yes, they succeeded in making hit singles but where are they today? They’ve vanished into the thin air. Names like Fela Anikulapo, Bob Marley and Mozart lives on. We are all different and have different potentials from one another so why trying to make something out of what you don’t possess? Made genius, if there is any; have a propensity of being a replica of a genius or celebrity before them because they are not naturally inspired. Being a genius is about intensifying your best and reimbursing for the rest. Alexander Fleming, a biologist who in 1928 noticed that a culture of staphylococcus has been contaminated by a blue-green mold. Around the mold was a halo. And that was it, he became a genius. He made a new discovery without imitating any of his predecessors in his research. From the above assertions, we can see that genius are born not made; it takes dedication and focus to be a genius. Take a look at the life of Philip Emeagwali, he is known for being a pioneer of supercomputer. At a tender age he was nicknamed 'calculus' due to his unmatched level of intelligence. A genius can be bore on a very narrow area of expertise. Genius possess extra ordinary intelligence and are creative in their works e.g. science, music or arts et cetera. Some manifest these great potentials as a child prodigy, the likes of Onafujiri Remet. A 3year old Nigerian boy who recently made history as the world youngest photographer which attracted the attention of Cable News Network (CNN), Reuters and other global media. Albert Einstein; A foremost genius once said “everyone is a genius” Genius is in all of us! It is left for you and me to explore it and let it show in you. Thank you. Geniuses are born and not made. Good day Mr. Chairman, erudite judges, the coordinators of this debate, accurate time keeper, distinguished audience. I am very happy that you all have set a time aside to read this e-debate. I am Emmanuel, representing Kogi State University, Anyigba. I will be taking a stance on the motion which says, “Geniuses are born and not made.” To begin with, what does the word “genius” even mean? According to Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, a genius is someone who has an unusually high level of intelligence, mental, skill, or ability. Oxford Dictionary defines genius as someone who has exceptional intellectual power or creativity power or other natural ability or tendency. From the above definitions, we can say geniuses are exceptionally intelligent people who make a measurable and unique contribution to their field of expertise or the world at large. A genius has high IQ. We should know that IQ is inherited. So, it proves that geniuses are born. A genius does not study. He researches life to make sure it can sustain his own existence. In our various institutions we can notice that there are some students who study 15 hours out of the 24 hours in a day still, they cannot secure a C’ in their exams while some students would just study for an hour or two and they are topping the class then what would we call that? Yes! It is called born genius because a genius does not struggle while others are struggling. He is being endowed with a supernatural gift; he knows his left from the right. Plenty of people are smart and even intelligent, but they are not quite geniuses because they lack creative abilities required. Other people are creative to some extent, but they do not have the intellectual capability to harness their creativity. Albert Einstein said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge, and this imaginative power is what a genius possesses”. They reason far better than normal people do. This quotation goes to say education is not the necessity to being a genius. Knowledge is just static awareness while imagination is dynamic creation. Let also take the birth of our lord Jesus into consideration. God Himself did not raise a man already in the world to save the world from sin. He been the creator of the Universe knows that geniuses are born not made. That is why Jesus Christ was given birth to and endowed with supernatural qualities to save the world from trespasses. I have been an advocate against the act of parents forcing their children to school, just because Mr. A’s son is a medical doctor, they also want theirs to become a medical doctor. They have forgotten the proverb: You can only take a Donkey to the river but you can never force it to drink water. When their ward starts doing bad academically they would start blaming people from their village(s) who does not want such child to thrive or most times, the child for his failure just because they forcefully want to make him a fairy tale genius which they do not know that a genius is being born not made. Thomas Edison said he was born a genius but did not know until he finally invented a bulb which he tried inventing for more than 1,000 times. And it is worthy to note that our great philosophers, the likes of Socrates, Aristotle and Thales who serve as the pillar of wisdom were not a “made geniuses” but “born geniuses” because during this era there was not a wide spread of formal education in short no education then to broaden their mind but due to fact there were born geniuses they were able to think beyond human reasoning. I will re-iterate that a very smart person could be said to be made, but a genius is not. The production of very smart people may be impressive, but it probably would not be groundbreaking -- building on existing ideas rather than forging new territory. These new ideas are definitely what they learnt. A genius develops on new path for others to follow. The motivation of a very smart person is also likely to be different from a genius’. It could be money, status, genuine interest in a subject. Finally, I will be leaving you with this question, if you think that anyone can become a “made genius” through hard work, practice, etc. why the majority of people are not genius then? Thank you. * References* Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English Curiosity.discovert.com/questi ons/how-geniuses-work Wisegeek; what is a genius? 1 Like |

Nairaland Administrator; Oluwaseun Osewa; Chief Co-ordinators, Co-ordinators, My Able Judges, Fellow Debaters, Ladies and Gentlemen. Good day, My Nairaland username is IamDejman and am here to represent my school, Lagos state university, opposing the topic Genius are born not made on this day 13th of December,2013. Who is a Genius? According to Wikipedia, A genius is a person who displays exceptional intellectual ability, creativity, or originality, typically to a degree that is associated with the achievement of unprecedented insight. It is hereby pertinent to note that a newly born baby (infant) can’t display the above characters therefore, I have in a brief way explained reason why I oppose the topic “Genius are born not made”. The phrase "born genius" is deceptive. Although genes definitely play a role in intelligence, genius is also the result of a tremendous amount of work. One of the most stubborn brain myths is that we're all stuck at the intelligence level we were born with, when actually IQ can change and be improved with effort. Many of our greatest artists and scientists demonstrated brilliance only after honing their craft through thousands of hours of practice and study. Scott Barry Kaufman, an American pathologist and a popular science said “Genius involves figuring out who you are, and owning yourself. It's about amplifying your best traits and compensating for the rest. Geniuses grab life by the horns, and persevere amidst setbacks. They take control of their lives, instead of waiting for others to open up doors. In this very important sense, greatness is completely, utterly, made”. Scott mentions that Genius take control of their lives instead of waiting for others to open up doors; therefore, if a person who feels himself/herself is a born genius would turn out to be a dunce. In addition, Geniuses are made, not born, and even the biggest dunce can learn something from the world class minds of Albert Einstein, Charles Darwin and Amadeus Mozart. We should know that genuine creative achievements depend more on perseverance over the long haul than on prodigious childhood skills. We cannot all be geniuses but we can learn from them. What makes geniuses special is their long-term commitment. They struggle very hard and they keep on persisting. They enjoy their work. They excel at concentrating and persevering. Their efforts are focused, and all geniuses have a firm sense of direction. Like everybody else, even the greatest minds that have ever existed have had to struggle and strive to achieve their goals. Charles Darwin, who was wrongly believed by many to have been "an aimless young man who unaccountably turned into a great genius". In fact, he was the most capable and best-prepared young biologist of his generation. Albert Einstein, who many thought was a failure at school, was in fact always a high achiever and came from a family with strong scientific interests. But it was not only geniuses with a scientific bent who had made enormous efforts to equip themselves with special qualities. The Bronte sisters did not suddenly begin writing great novels. They perfected their writing skills through intense preparation over a period of many years and George Eliot had an excellent training; She was immensely diligent and made herself into a superb scholar and writer through her serious and sustained effort. Neither was it the case that every genius was once a child prodigy. Many child prodigies did not go on to be particularly productive adults while some - including Charles Darwin - were unexceptional in their youth. And while almost all of the world's greatest musicians and composers were child prodigies, including Mozart, Handel, JS Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Schumann and Debussy, even the most exceptionally able still took at least 10 years of hard study to become a major composer. In Conclusion, Virtually all geniuses also had a firm sense of purpose and a strong motivation to achieve. This was combined with a capacity to concentrate for long periods of time and to resist distractions - abilities particularly honed by scientists such as Isaac Newton, Darwin and Einstein. A third shared attribute of geniuses was the capacity to focus efforts towards specific goals. Many geniuses also benefited from a supportive home environment. Absorbing the lessons of geniuses will not make everyone into a genius but numerous ordinary people can benefit from the insights that exploration of genius can reveal. With all this points, It is pertinent to oppose the motion that GENIUS ARE BORN NOT MADE. Thanks, IamDejman, Lagos state University ... Reference Wikipedia The Internet c/o Google |

iamDejman: in addition, Geniuses are made, not born, and even the biggest dunce can learn something from the world class minds of Albert Einstein, Charles Darwin and Amadeus Mozart. We should know that genuine creative achievements depend more on perseverance over the long haul than on prodigious childhood skillsir, are you saying a person born with imbecility who's naturally creative in sculpture. Can such a person learn those scientific formulas from Eistein or Darwin? I see it as a fight with nature which is destructive . |
Re: Nairaland Interschool Winner:KSU by Emmyk(m): 1:38pm On Dec 13, 2013 |
Quote from Fetus "First of all, we live in a world that cherishes “natural” talent and that believes we’re either BORN a genius or we've got no hope." No hope? I do not understand what it means. I said it in my argument that we have born geniuses and we have very smart people. So, it's not like there is no hope of survival for you, if you do not thrive in life via been a genius. In essence, I am saying it does not mean you are a dunce, once you are not a genius. |

Fentoluwa:All protocols duly observed. First of all, I'll like to use Nelson Mandela as a cas study who was a renowned and professional boxer while in his youth but at the end of his life, he was a recognized politician and freedom fighter. Meaning he learnt boxing but when he started working on being a genius, he turned out to be a freedom fighter instead of being in the ring!....Therefore, I still maintain the fact that the topic genius are born not made should be fully opposed!.... |
