MARITIME ACADEMY OF NIGERIA, ORON Established by Decree No. 16 of 1988 (Now Cap. 217 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 1990) ADMISSION 2014/2015 SESSION Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for admission into the various programmes on offer in the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron for the 2014/2015 Academic Session. 1.0 Programmes: The following programmes are tenable during the 2014/2015 Session: [A] NATIONAL DIPLOMA in: a] Nautical Science (2 Years) b] Marine Engineering (2 Years) c] Boat/Ship Building Technology (2 Years) d] Electrical/Electronics Engineering (2 Years) e] Hydrography (2 Years) f] Marine Meteorology and Oceanography (2 Years) g] Hydrology and Coastal Resources Management (2 Years) These are two-year (4 – Semesters) courses of study leading to the award of the National Diploma in Nautical Science, Marine Engineering, Boat/Ship Building Technology, Electrical/Electronics Engineering Hydrography or Meteorology and Oceanography as applicable. Holders of the National Diploma in Nautical Science and Marine Engineering can take up a career ashore or as sea-going merchant navy officers on the deck or in the engine room department of a ship as applicable. Holders of the National Diploma in Boat/ Ship Building Technology can work in ship/boat building and repair yards, dry-docking yards, Marine Engineering workshops and other relevant establishments. Holders of the National Diploma in Electrical/Electronics Engineering can work in any organisation requiring the services of Electrical/ Electronics Technicians or Engineers. Holders of National Diploma in Hydrography can work as a marine surveyors or where hydrographic maps are produced. Holders of National Diploma in Marine Meteorology and Oceanography can work in Port Meteorology offices or in oil companies. Holders of National Diploma in Hydrology and Coastal Resources Management can work in Coastal and recreational facilities, in environmental protection agency or in oil companies. h] Maritime Transport and Business Studies (2 Years). Holders of the National Diploma in Maritime Transport and Business Studies can take up a career as Supervisors in the operations, administrative, commercial or finance departments of maritime establishments, shipping companies, shipping agencies, ports, oil companies, off-shore oil support companies, manufacturing companies, and organizations dealing with import and export of goods and marine insurance. They can also work in establishments dealing with maritime law and marine environment protection. [B] HIGHER NATIONAL DIPLOMA in: (a) Nautical Science (2 Years) (b) Marine Engineering (2 Years) (c) Maritime Transport & Business Management (2 Years) (d) Naval Architecture (2 Years) 2 [C] POST GRADUATE DIPLOMA in (a) Shipping and Transport Management (1 Year) (b) Maritime Transport Technology (1 Year) (c) Maritime Engineering (2 years) [E] SPECIALISED SEAMEN TRAINING COURSES 2.0 ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS A] NATIONAL DIPLOMA [ND] IN NAUTICAL SCIENCE/MARINE ENGINEERING/ BOAT & SHIP BUILDING TECHNOLOGY/ ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEERING/ HYDROGRAPHY/MARINE METEOROLOGY AND OCEONOGRAPHY/HYDROLOGY AND COASTAL RESOURCES MANAGEMENT. Applicants must posses the Senior School Certificate [SSC] or its equivalent with at least FIVE CREDIT passes in subjects which must include Mathematics, English Language, Physics, and any two of Geography, Technical Drawing, General Science, and Chemistry, obtained at NOT MORE THAN TWO SITTINGS. B] NATIONAL DIPLOMA [ND] IN MARITIME TRANSPORT & BUSINESS STUDIES Applicants must possess at least FIVE CREDIT passes at NOT MORE THAN TWO SITTINGS of the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) or its equivalent. The subjects must include English Language, Mathematics, Economics/Commerce and any two of the following: Geography, Government and Book-Keeping. OTHER REQUIREMENTS for admission into all National Diploma programmes include: a] Success in the competitive Entrance Examination which comes up on Saturday, January 25, 2014 at 0900 hours at the centres indicated below (See Section 4.1). b] Success in the Oral/Written Interview following the Entrance Examination. c] Passing the medical and physical fitness examinations and eye- sight test to be conducted by the Academy’s Medical Doctor. d] Applicants must be single and remain single throughout the duration of the programme at the Academy and be between the ages of 16 and 21 years for 1A (a-b) and between16 and 25 years for 1 (A) (c), (d), (e), (f) (g) and (h) by the date of commencement of the session for which they are applying for admission. e] Applicants awaiting result of the SSCE or its equivalent need not apply. NOTE: Candidates are not required to bring recommendation letters from referees. Admission will be based strictly on:- i] Conformity with the prescribed age limit; ii] Possession of the requisite credit passes in the relevant subjects at Senior School Certificate level; iii] Medical and physical fitness; and iv] Performance in the competitive Entrance Examination and subsequent written/oral interview. [B] HIGHER NATIONAL DIPLOMA (HND) PROGRAMMES a] NAUTICAL SCIENCE (2 Years) b] MARINE ENGINEERING (2 Years) c] NAVAL ARCHITECTURE (2 Years) Candidates must: i] satisfy all the requirements for admission into the National Diploma Programme in Nautical Science, Marine Engineering, or Naval Architecture as applicable; ii] possess a National Diploma in Nautical Science, Marine Engineering or Boat & Ship Building Technology from the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron or from a recognised institution, with a Cumulative Grade Point Average of not less than 2.50 (Lower Credit); and 3 iii] have undergone a minimum of one year Post-ND Apprenticeship Training or acquired Cognate Work Experience in a relevant establishment or organization. d] HIGHER NATIONAL DIPLOMA (HND) IN MARITIME TRANSPORT & BUSINESS MANAGEMENT Candidates must: i] satisfy all the requirements for admission into the National Diploma in Maritime Transport and Business Studies Programme; ii] possess the National Diploma in Maritime Transport and Business Studies from the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron or from a recognized institution, with a Cumulative Grade Point Average of not less than 2.50 (Lower Credit); and iii] have undergone a minimum of 12 months [One – year] Post-ND industrial attachment for cognate work experience in a relevant establishment or company. [C] POST GRADUATE DIPLOMA PROGRAMMES ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS: 1. PGD Shipping and Transport Management (one year) a) Applicants must possess a good Honours Degree (B.Sc.) or a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Business or Social Science from a recognised University or Polytechnic. b) Membership of relevant Professional body will be an added advantage. c) Candidates with qualifications equivalent to (a) above may be considered for admission based on maturity and length of service in the maritime industry. 2. PGD Maritime Transport Technology (one year) a) Applicants must possess a good Honours Degree or a Higher National Diploma (HND) in the Physical Sciences or Engineering from a recognised University or Polytechnic. b) Membership of relevant Professional body will be an added advantage. c) Candidates with qualifications equivalent to (a) above may be considered for admission based on maturity and length of service in the maritime industry. 3. PGD Maritime Engineering (Two Years) a) Applicants must possess a good Honours Degree or a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Engineering from a recognised University or Polytechnic. b) 1st Class Marine Engineering Certificate (Foreign going). c) Candidates with qualifications equivalent to (a) above may be considered for admission based on maturity and length of service in the Maritime industry. d) Membership of relevant professional body will be an added advantage. Candidates for the Specialised Seafarers Training Courses should note that the above courses (in content, name and requirements) are being streamlined with the provisions of the STCW Convention. Log on to the Maritime Academy Portal www.maritimeaca demyportal.org . Click on Application to applied for e.g. National Diploma, PG Diploma, HND and Basic Safety & Special Courses. Enter your PIN and SERIAL NO. Click “Proceed”. Fill the online application. Click “Save and Continue” to temporarily save your application and update later OR Click “Save and Complete” to finally complete your application.
