About 4,500 people gathered in the tent, including President Jacob Zuma, who sat between Mandela's widow, Graca Machel, and his ex-wife, Winnie Mandela.

"You symbolize today and always will ... qualities of forgiveness and reconciliation," said a tearful Ahmed Kathrada, a close friend of Mandela who served time in prison with him for defying the apartheid government. "I've lost a brother. My life is in a void, and I don't know who to turn to."

Talk show queen Oprah Winfrey and business mogul Richard Branson were also among the attendees.

His casket was placed in his bedroom overnight as villagers gathered outside to pay their respects.

The Mandela family, President Jacob Zuma and Cabinet members will be present, along with local and foreign dignitaries. About 4,500 people are expected to attend, including talk show host Oprah Winfrey and Prince Charles.

Following the service, family and friends will walk to the grave site to say goodbye.

In keeping up with tradition, Mandela will be buried in the afternoon, when the sun is at its highest.
