Another Look At President Jonathan’s Achievements by theshadyexpress(m): 5:00pm On Dec 16, 2013 |
We have upgraded to serve you better. BY NWAFILI ANENE THE present democratic dispensation is about 14 years old. President Goodluck Ebele Azikiwe Jonathan’s election to the seat of power is symbolic, representing a paradigm shift, a renaissance, a new age, a new Nigeria. The revolution that Nigeria desires is silently taking place. Since the beginning of his administration just about two years ago, the emphasis has been on transformation: transformations of the way government businesses are carried out, attitudinal change, and value orientation. His administration is characterized by silent revolutionary zeal. There is no noise or media hype of what is going on. President Jonathan has shown the ability to provide solutions to hydra-headed nagging national problems. His rule has touched on all aspects of the economy. Now, what are those things that the Jonathan administration has achieved? Specifically and verifiable too, are; • The first President and non-muslim to build Almajiri schools throughout Northern Nigeria. Until now, no government at state and local levels have deemed it fit that these Nigerians deserve rehabilitation. • He took the courage to unbundle the Power Holding Company of Nigeria. We believe that very soon Nigerians will begin to see the effects of this bold step. • Restoration of the railway system. The system has been moribund for the past 20 years. Feasibility of three others to open new railway corridors, which will be concessioned to local and foreign investors. Expected to create 10 million new jobs and cause inflow of 200 billion dollars investment into the country. Now, go and see these for yourself: * Lagos-Kano train service is now fully operation after being moribund for more than 15 years * Eastern rail line from Port Harcourt to Maiduguri * Zaria/Kaura Namoda rail route * Abuja to Kaduna 187 kilometre rail line * Ajaokuta-Warri Standard Gauge Rail line * Lagos-Ibadan new gauge rail line • About 90% of 22 airports earmarked for rehabilitation and remodelling completed. • Agricultural production has increased. * Eliminating the corruption in the fertilizer distribution system, thereby ending the over forty year old racket and government subsidization of corruption * The government intervention in rice production and other such initiatives resulted in the creation of more than two million new jobs among rural dwellers * Cocoa export reached the highest level thereby creating a new set of millionaires. 900 million dollars worth of Cocoa exported, as non-oil revenue first time in decades * Anticipated annual earnings of $136 million in foreign exchange from cassava which was exported for the first time in 2012 under the Vale Chain Addition programme of the Federal Government. • Massive rehabilitation of roads throughout the country is ongoing via Subsidy Reinvestment Programme SURE-P. Checkout the following roads * Abuja-Abaji-Lokoja; * Benin-Ore-Sagamu dual carriageway; * Onitsha-Enugu-Port Harcourt dual carriageway; * Kaduna-Maiduguri dual carriageway; * East-West Road * Amongst others • The SURE-P projects resulted from the partial removal of the subsidy on petroleum products: * 500 Primary Health Centres (PHC) across the 36 states and FCT of the Federation * Selection of 125 General Hospitals across the 36 states and the FCT * Training of Nigerians across the federation on skill acquisition. * Over 5000 jobs created in the health sector alone. * Many more in the road maintenance sector. • National dialogue * This is a bold step to reinvent Nigeria * For the first time, the no-go area clause is thrown into the dustbin, creating an atmosphere for Nigerians to sit down to jaw-jaw instead the war-war. * To allow Nigerians define their own brand of democracy suitable to our diversity • Upholding democratic tenets * First President to declare a state of emergency without sacking democratically elected governments * First President to embrace and brook opposition without the usual coercion using the Federal apparatus * The most misunderstood, insulted and criticized, yet has remained focused without the usual abuse of office by use of ALL MEANS AVAILABLE. We hope that this will culminate in a Nigeria where every citizen’s potential would be maximally exploited for the benefit of the country. If you can run, you will be encouraged to run very well; if you can jump, you will be encouraged; whatever you can do, you will be made to do it very well. President Goodluck Jonathan has shown the road map to good leadership, which is the bane of the Nigeria project. He has consistently shown • Commitment and respect to the rule of law • Commitment to conducting free and fair election • Commitment to participatory approach to resolving national issues • Commitment to govern within the premise of the constitution of Nigeria • Commitment to accountability as indicated by the performance contract signed by members of his cabinet and their subsequent presentation of performance card. Mr Op, I commend your efforts to compile this long list of President Jonathan's achievements and post on Nairaland. However, I'm afraid that it may not cut ice with a group of people who have vowed to hate the President for nothing. I will be shocked it it generates sufficient comments that will take it to the front page. This is so because if they see that your facts are incontrovertible, they will avoid it like a plague and proceed to one that bashes GEJ and suits their fancy. This is Nairaland. 39 Likes |

President Jonathan is not the one who unbundled PHCN. OBJ did. But Jonathan has surpassed that feat by over 100%. I'm very very proud of Jonathan's achievements in the power sector and will vote for him to complete it. While OBJ wasted over 16B dollars on NIPP's, Jonathan has in less than 3 years finished work on the NIPP's and has succesfully privatised them. That is a remarkable milestone that will catapult the electricity sector to an enviable height. 39 Likes |

People are just unfair in their criticisms to Jonathan. If you sit down and reflect logically on a lot of things, you will find out that GEJ has done a lot. Look at the railways are gradually come back. He is the most under rated president. 33 Likes |

I dont know about other places but public power supply in this part of Enugu has been fantastic in the last few weeks. Kudos to Interstate Electric, which is the owner of Enugu Distribution Company. Kudos to GEJ for ensuring transparent privatisation of PHCN. 21 Likes |

You can't help but agree with the op. I have always maintained that GEJ has performed more than so many of his predecessors. It is not in doubt. Aviation- despite the allegations against that woman. She has done tremendous work in the Aviation industry more than any other Minister before her. It's just unfortunate that she allowed her greed to eclipse the remodelling work she has done in all the major airports. Agricuture- Adeshina is very impressive with his reforms with improved value chain to cassava and exports, rice mills and fertiliser distribution reforms. Works- Like the Op mentioned, GEJ is handling so many road contracts at the same time that one would begin to wonder what other presidents were doing before now. The Lagos-Ibadan road is a landmark which GEJ is doing after OBJ failed with concessioning. Railway- Many Nigerians now travel by rail from Lagos-Ibadan. Power- he has privatised DISCOS/GENCOS and using proceeds of the sale to upgrade the national grid. Soon, the problem of electricity will be history Job creation. I love his YOUWIN strategy. I have seen beneficiaries who never knew anybody in govt get it. 29 Likes |

X-Phoenix619: Apart from the remodelled Enugu Airport, GEJ completed the Owerri-Onitsha which OBJ abandoned in 2006. GEJ has also remodelled the Sam Mbakwe Airport in Owerri. GEJ has completed construction of Alaoji power station in Aba and will soon commission it. GEJ has rehabilitated some bad portions of the Enugu-Ph road(especially the Aba-Umuahia axis) and just recently awarded the total reconstruction of that road. GEJ has been working and rehabilitating the railways from Port Harcourt to Enugu. Passenger services is set to commence soon. GEJ has built a new federal university in Afikpo, EBonyi State. GEJ has finished and completed the Onitsha ports which is awaiting concessioning. GEJ has engaged PPP to deliver on the long awaited 2nd Niger Bridge. GEJ has done excellently well in the south East and we will vote for him in 2015 22 Likes |

Those who fail to acknowledge the giant strides which Jonathan's administration is making in various sectors of the economy are enemies of the nation who are pissed that Jonathan is changing the face of Nigerian politics for the good of the common man. It's no longer business as usual. Normally, when a change is taking place, those who benefited from the old system are bound to put up some fight and that is exactly what is happening in Nigeria today. It is unfortunate that some people have been brainwashed into making themselves available as willing tools in the hands of these enemies of the masses as can be confirmed even here on nairaland where APC e-rats who have choosen to mortgage the futures of their children for a pot of porrige, continually, though ignorantly, cast vituperation on the best president we have had so far. However, i'm confident that the views of those hired e-rats are like a drop of water in an occean compared to the general perception of the Jonathan's administration by the good people of Nigeria. It will be in our best interest if we all rally round our president in his efforts to recover the nation from the grips of some selfish cabals who have over the years turned the nation into their inherited empires. Posterity will not forgive us if we sit back and watch these enemies of nigeria drag us back into the days of darkness. 18 Likes |

Bukkyade: You can't help but agree with the op. I have always maintained that GEJ has performed more than so many of his predecessors. It is not in doubt. I love this. These are hard facts which are easily verifiable. There is a penchant for some people like Omenka and Gbawe to overshadow these hard facts with noise and hot air. I don't know why they don't see these achievements. They will be shocked in 2015 when people vote Jonathan again for these wonderful improvements. They will be shocked 12 Likes |

Are they blind? Somebody who resides in Kano knows how old the Kano Airport was looking before Jonathan came in, they know it's now wearing a completely new look but they will still come here to talk rubbish about Jonathan. It's incredible. 15 Likes |

If there is anything that I must not fail to thank Jonathan for, it is the power reforms that he is aggressively pursuing. The dude has impressed me with the direction he is going. He took over power and has completed the NIPP's, he got Diiezani to launch the gas to power emergency plan which has ensured the adequacy of gas to the plants thereby restoring investors confidence to participate in the privatisation of GENCOS. Unlike his predecessors, Jonathan has succesfully carried out the privatisation of PHCN. it is the sure way to go inorder to end the power crisis in Nigeria. Britain went the same direction in 1986 and has made progress thereafter. You can't help but give GEJ kudos for this move. The present challenges that the new DISCOS/GENCOS are facing is expected and Will give way to a new era of power stability and competition. 8 Likes |

Mandelaguy: not even about the new Kano Airport terminal alone. there is the Kano-Maidugri road dualisation that has reached advanced stages under this administration. The North is also a major beneficiaries of dams and irrigation projects by the present Minister of water resource SE. In addition, GEJ has built so many Al majiri schools in the north. He also has new universities in places like Kebbi and Zamfara 6 Likes |
