THE recent global ranking of the universities which shows that no Nigerian university could even make it to the top 10 in Africa, let alone the world at large, has raised eyebrows among the stakeholders in the educational sector who have blamed corruption among administrators, academics, staff, students, and even parents for this woeful outing.

Seven Nigerian universities in the sixth Pan-African Universities Debating Championship have crashed out of the final stage of the competition, leaving their competitors from South Africa and Botswana to take the shine.

The University of Cape Town, South Africa emerged winner, carting home a star price of $1,000.

The theme of the championship hosted by the University of Calabar is “Conflict, Insecurity and Good Governance in Africa.”

The eight African countries that participated are South-Africa,Ghana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Cameroon, Tanzania, Botswana and Nigeria.

The Nigerian universities that took part in the debate are the University of Calabar, Cross River University of Technology, Imo State University, University of Lagos; University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State; University of Uyo, Ambrose Ali University, Ekpoma, Edo State and Michael Opara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State.
To this end, experts are calling for a comprehensive policy framework that would turn the education system around. According to them, the policy which would be all-embracing, would address the numerous challenges facing the education system including lack of infrastructure. They believe that with the new policy thrust, the education sector would be repositioned so as to boost the country's competitiveness.
