Nigerians, Our Culture Is Garbage by Ikengawo: 6:31am On Dec 18, 2013 |
I'm very sad to say this but i think it applies for africans as a whole. Our culture, is garbage. If our culture wasn't trash, and the way it's implemented wasn't equally visceral, why would our society function the way it does. I recently read the Iyabo Obasanjo letter. For years we have been screaming that nobody hold our leaders accountable, nobody in power is brave enough to fight corruption, so and and so forth. This woman comes out, gives you a detailed account of her father's corruption, and so many of the responses, for allegedly educated people reverted to 'How can you insult your father?'. This letter is literally one of our only chances to destroy a man that is known by all of us as a nucleus for corruption and misrule...and your primary outrage isn't that he abandoned his family, had sex with his son's daughter, left his wife to die, stole millions, defrauded nigeria's democracy, exploited Yar' Adua's dying health for his own person gain..as the letter highlighted in detail. Your primary outrage was that she violated 'our culture'. You didn't bother mentioning whether or not Obasanjo follow his 'cultural obligations'...that didn't matter. So here's the point. I used to wonder how horrible it would be during the slave trade to be caught and sold as a slave. To live your life in bondage at a degraded state with no hope of escape until i realized, what is the difference between american slavery and nigerian culture? You call all adults Sir even when they whip and beat you and have don't nothing to deserve the title If you misbehave you are beaten and humiliated Children and women spend their entire lives doing chores and working tirelessly for nothing while men drink and parade around. You're not allowed to speak your mind to your 'masters' Nobody appreciates your life (unless you have money then they pretend so that they can get some crumbs) and if you go too far, someone will kill you (police in Nigeria, slave hunters in US) Children are made to fear their parents, their teach, their pastor, everyone. Fear. Not respect, fear and there's a difference. Our culture is trash. It was designed to 'teach us respect' but Nigerians respect nothing but money and treat their fellow man, especially if they're poor, like a worthless animal It's designed to teach us to be responsible for each other, but Nigeria is populated with the most selfish, greedy self-serving men alive to the point that it's one of the world's most corrupt nations. It's designed to teach sexual piety but our women lead the world in prostitution and our men lead the world in pedophilia, molestation and rape. It's designed to teach us to follow the path of God but everyone is in church begging God for money and praying that God kills their 'enemies' It is designed to teach us to respect our ancestors and those that came before us but 96% of nigerian schools don't even teach history. All of the things it's 'designed' to do, it fails miserably at doing. Meanwhile, in a country like the US, where children aren't 'taught to respect' their 'leaders' the president can eat and drink with the common man, and when they encounter their political enemies they treat them with respect and dignity that we have NEVER seen in Africa. Our culture failed. We literally can't take care of ourselves and society because we're are raised to be humiliated and degraded. Parents punish their children by destroying their self esteem. Men openly and proudly beat their wives and we laugh, women pour chemicals on their skin to make themselves uglier than they already are and degrade each other. If we had a real culture we wouldn't have the kidnapping, cultism, boko haram, and every other negative thing a human being can do flourishing in our society. Nigeria is literally hell because of our culture. |

From now on, if you have any semblance of respect for the progress of man don't allow your fellow Nigerian to justify anything using 'our culture' as a pretense. If someone challenges another person, and the only think you find wrong with the 'challenge' is 'our culture' being violated, there's nothing wrong with that challenge because this worthless culture has only proliferated blood corruption and hate. |
