Notebooks, net books etc are all types of laptop. Laptop merely refers to a 'category' of PCs that can be placed on your lap while you operate on it. Notebook, Netbooks etc are just more specific categories.

The differenciation is just about size and not capacity or functionalities anymore. Yesterdays main frame servers are todays desktop/laptops when you consider processing speed and disk storages. So also, todays tablets are now yesterdays notebooks in terms of processing speed and storage. In essence, it all depends on the flexibility you wanted.

laptops are also called notebook. Laptops are of two types namely notebooks and netbooks. There is also a new type now called ultrabooks, its a combination of laptop and tablet. Notebooks are big laptops with dvd drive and the like. Netbooks are mini laptops which have no dvd drive. Our common 10.1 inches laptops are what are called netbooks, anything bigger than that is a notebook but both are laptops. An utrabook are those tablet that could also function as a laptop with the aid of docked keyboards which are designed to fit on the laps or on a desk as a desktop. Example of ultra book is the microsoft surface, sony vai duo 11 and 13 etc. Hoped that helped.

We have laptop,notebooks and we have netbooks.Laptops and notebooks are synonyms but netbooks are smaller(not more than 10inches)and the ram and hdd are also smaller than that of a laptop.Netbooks are not used for heavy works or for multitasking.

The most common difference between notebook and laptop are :
screen size : laptop screen usually bigger than notebook
specification : most of the time, laptop use advance CPU than notebook. So laptop can handle a lot of heavy application and software that required graphic card, high RAM. While, notebook usually use for common daily tast such as micsrosoft word, and etc.
