An Open Letter To The I.G Of Police FRN By Victims Of Police Extortion. by uhuru14(m): 11:18am On Dec 21, 2013
From my village, Ada Obollo-Etiti, to the Obollo-Afor satelite town, covers a distance of about 3.5 kilometers due north of Udenu L.G.A, in Nsukka, Enugu State.
Within this length is a lonely desserted and dilapidated area called the "Ugwuegbe burrow-pit". A name denoting the confusion of the Contractors that constructed the road, for being helpless at the sight of chronic landsliding erosion that had been menacing the area.

As usual in Nigeria, such area becomes a haven for brigands, men of the underworld and miscreants. This over the years makes the road somehow impassable.

Sensing the recurrent danger of loss of Lives and Property at the Ugwuegbe burrow-pit, the D.P.O of Obollo-Afor Police station often deploy Men of his command to mount checks at the area. This resulted in the restoration of safety of lives of commuters and their property in that isolated portion of the high way.

However, because this road is always busy with frequent vehicular and human traffic for it is a major federal inter-state road linking Nkalagu in Ebonyi state to Obollo town in Enugu state; these Police Officers turned their statutory duty of protecting the lives and property of the Road Users into an illegal small-scale business.

They extort money from the Travellers and Drivers.

Last night, the commercial motorcycle Operator conveying me from Obollo-Afor down to my house told me that there is an upward review of their fare charge, up to 30% increase. Upon enquiry, he told me that Police at Ugwuegbe extorts a minimum of #50 from them. I accepted and boarded his bike.

Promptly on reaching the zone we were stopped by the Officers with bright torchlight of brutality and ordered to pay what the Police Officers on duty there called a "usual pass" of #50 or should be detained there. The innocent Okada man after series of pleading, complied: and the ignition key of his bike which the Officer has seized was given back to him.

At this inhuman treatment being habitually meted out to us by the people who are meant to protect us, I sensed a case of "We were saved today to be killed tomorrow".

We were saved from the Robbers who if not for the routine Police Checks could've robbed us of our phones and other valuables. But it pains so much to note that the Police, now robs us of our cash under the threat a Federal A.K 47 and Pump actions. Now, the unsuspecting public leaks their wounds to save the day under the Police Pseudo vigilance.

This call for rescue from the Rescue Operatives becomes more urgent now, that we are in the Yuletide. Our Sons and Daughters, Friends and Well-wishers from far and near will be journeying through this route to celebrate with us and/or for us.
We therefore plead that the Echelon of the Nigeria Police Force effects a change in the status quo before it runs from six-six to sevens.

Atleast we have the inalienable right to safety on the roads as Nigerians living in the hinterlands of Nsukka land.

So help us Lord
