A Nigerian living in the United States, Mr Michael Iheme, 50, is currently standing trial at the district court, Hennepin, Minnesota for allegedly killing his 28-year-old wife, Anthonia Eberechi.

According to a report by an American newspaper, The Star Tribune, Iheme reportedly placed an emergency call to the police after allegedly killing his wife. He was quoted as having told policemen on arrival at the scene of the murder that he had “killed the woman that messed my life up, a woman that destroyed me.” Iheme was on July 25 charged with first-degree, premeditated murder in the death of his wife and is being held on a $1 million bail in the Hennepin County jail.

Eye witnesses said Anthonia was shot on July 24 as she left work at the Sholom Home West, an assisted-living centre. Two witnesses reported seeing a man matching Iheme’s description with a gun near his wife’s car in the parking lot.

Court records showed that she had an active harassment restraining order against Iheme. The supporting affidavit suggested a history of domestic abuse, including alleged threats by Iheme to kill his wife.

In his account of the incident, one of Anthonia’s co-workers said that just as she got into her car about 2.35 p.m. on July 24, Iheme fired at the vehicle. Anthonia’s car then lurched forward, clipped a van, jumped a kerb and rolled down a hill into a fence. Iheme was said to have followed the car down the hill and fired more shots at the car and the deceased.

When Iheme was arrested at the scene, a semi-automatic handgun was found near his car, police said. The police also found a gun permit inside the car.

Police also said that an hour and a half before the shooting, Iheme went to the day-care centre for their children and left a new emergency contact information, “in case something happened today.”

Shortly after the incident, news of the murder spread round the Nigerian community. Some Nigerian neighbours said Iheme had brought the deceased from Nigeria some years ago, but the marriage later went sour, resulting in constant harassment and fighting.
One of the couple’s former neighbours said Iheme took care of their two children while his wife worked. The neighbour, who sought anonymity, said Anthonia moved out of the area some months ago while Iheme and the children left later.
