Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka yesterday faulted the visit of All Progressives Congress, APC, leaders to former President Olusegun Obasanjo last Saturday warning that Nigeria was heading for a shipwreck with such political romance. In his statement, titled: “Shipwreck Ahead”, Professor Soyinka cautioned that Nigeria would need rescue operations if the APC intends to court Obasanjo to serve as a navigator for the ship of the state. According to Soyinka’s short statement, “an APC-led group, we understand, has been paying courtesy visits to former Heads of States. Would it be correct to state that their purpose is captured in the following Mission Statement? ‘Tinubu added that the APC had resolved to rescue Nigeria, appealing to Obasanjo to lead the mission. We’re resolved and determined to rescue Nigeria. We want you as navigator,’ he said.” Soyinka, then added: “If this attribution is correct, may I urge you, as an urgent public service, to advise families to begin the stockpiling of life-belts for the guaranteed crash. Don’t forget to alert the coastguards—ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States), AU (African Union), UNO (United Nations Organization) etc, to be on the alert for possible salvage operations. “If General Sani Abacha were alive today, would he also have been on the ship’s complement? As Captain perhaps?”Soyinka asked. 8 Likes |

Tinubu is a practical politician. Soyinka is more idealistic. Paying visits to former heads of state is not really to garner their support, as much as it is to make sure they dont work against you. You have to assuage the fears of the king makers, so that they know you are not taking power to pursue an agenda against them. It doesnt mean APC will win, but at least you are only fighting Jonathan instead of multiple factions. There is a reason Soyinka is not a politician. 8 Likes |

So APC chieftains are seeking Obasanjo's 'consent' and 'blessings' in their adventure. This just shows these guys are no different from other politicians. Why anyone would choose them over the ruling party is a total mystery. 4 Likes |

By professor's assertion of APC scouting for whoever they deemed advantageous to wrestle power from the present government by leveraging integrity and personality speaks volume about their political modalities which are not of benefit to the common man but to the grandstanding and egocentric desperadoes. How can you say you are a progressive and at the same time embarking on a retrogressive mission? The inclusion of unrepentant corrupt fellows in a salvage ship on a rescue mission will definitely put the destination of such ship in doubt, that is if wreck doesn't occur before departure. As a viable opposition,APC's logical proposition should be how to market their manifesto to the masses and engaging in constructive criticisms that attract mass appeal by telling us what they have in stock and not by in pretence turning a blind eye to the pedigree of their newly found political disasters that plunged this nation into the current state of mess because of their insatiable quest for power. In the name of increasing in numerical strength of political gladiators in their camp they suddenly developed 'amnesia' forgeting who the enemies of this nation are, then how do you expect the citizenry to entrust you with their vote when you don't have a clear-cut definition of their problem, that means, as my people cannot vouch for you having our interest in heart,we will have to continue to gnash our teeth and make do with what we have while the suffering last since we cannot differentiate between the opposition(APC) and the government in power(PDP) any longer. 1 Like |

Na today the ship wreck? Nigerians are floating on their various rafts. The interest Obasanjo, Tinubu and Buhari have in common is controlling the TREASURY and not about service, if Nigerians vote APC in, na to compare who steals more! 2 Likes |

....this is truly the Wole Soyinka i use to know, saying it as it is,without being partisan.APC its an illegal recycling company, what they do is simply putting old wine in new bottles, people whose sole interest is always to remain in the corridors of power and playing on the sentiment of the deprived masses, whose conditions were made so by this same leaders in the past...and i ask a simple question, its life any better for ordinary Nigerians living in APC states eg Lagos,Osun,Imo,Sokoto etc...we need changes for good in Nigeria but not the type APC is offering,'all hands must be on deck'to rescue the sinking ship called Nigeria. What we need more now is social re-engineering and value re-orientation and nt the class war being fought by our thieving elites. 1 Like |

Old habits die hard I guess. If I were him, I would keep mum on this issue. Nigeria is tending towards anarchy, this is not the time to be idealistic. This is the time to be pragmatic and rescue Nigeria. |

We need sm1 lyk Jerry Rawlings of Ghana not TINUBU who will take tinx personal n flush the entire bad eggs out of the system |

Soyinka is being "spot on" as usual.. APC appears desperate with every passing day. If Gen Abacha were alive, he probably would have been approached also. This recent activity of APC must be condemned by all and sundry! Little wonder the likes of Oshiomole has been distancing himself from such charade. SMH for Nigeria's future! |

Soyinka still dont understand politics... Is this why academics in this part of the world are only good at talking and theories but zero physical achievement to show for the acclaimed knowledge? Buhari wanted to be an idealist by insisting on working only with people of unquestionable charater but what happened to him again and again? Late chief Gani Fewahinmi tried but what happened? You can't defeat a sitting president in Nigeria without getting every other person on your side. Even if OBJ has no electoral value, he can give us valuable information which the opposition can use as part of preparation for elections. |

This has shown that APC has no clear cut goal at all They are busy extending hands of fellowship to all crooks in the country just to make themselves count. Error! Any sane Nigerian should distance him/herself form them. 1 Like |
