They tried to turn our Southern brothers against us by labelling us 'militants' but it seems as if the rest of Nigeria is rallying around us. Ohanaeze faults the North Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation in the South-east geo-political zone, has taken a swipe at Northern political leaders, accusing them of waging a media war on the agitation for development the development Niger Delta. Ohanaeze described the exchange of words between the two regions as a deliberate attempt to demonise leaders of the Niger Delta region who had been agitating for a better deal in Nigeria. Deputy Chairman of Ohanaeze in Abuja, Comrade Austin Ifedinezi, who spoke at a symposium held in honour of the late Niger Delta freedom fighter, Isaac Boro, condemned in very strong terms, what he described as "series of campaigns against collective efforts of the nation to find durable solution to the socio-economic problems of the Niger Delta region." Ifedinezi berated the Arewa Consultative Forum, former governors, serving senators and some respected political and opinion leaders of the North who allegedly mounted the recent campaign against the Niger Delta people, inisting that such unguarded utterances were capable of further fuelling the Niger Delta crisis to the detriment of the entire country. The organisation warned the Federal Government to resist the temptation of adopting the military option in solving problems of the zone, but to instead, adopt a holistic approach that should include convening a Sovereign National Conference to discuss issues of marginalisation and underdevelopment facing different groups in the country. "Such attitude is very unfortunate and unacceptable and it would be impossible to build a stable and progressive nation in a situation where one section continues to insist that it will remain masters while another section is made to bear the brunt of the so- called national development. "It is difficult to find any justification for these insensitive vituperations from the North. It is really sad that these sentiments are being expressed at a time when all hands in the country should be on deck to ensure that the people of Niger Delta get a better deal, as a way of wiping out the over half a century of marginalisation of other parts of the country to the benefit of the North," he said. |

Its good the leaders (governors, arewa, Ohanaeze, etc) are also fighting among themselves now. Like it happens on nairaland, they all need to face the problem of prejudice and disunity and look it squarely in the face. There are issues they all need to iron out which have been abandoned for too long while the country was relentlessy being dragged under and leaders were ferrying Nigerian revenue abroad for their personal use. Lets bring all the simmering prejudices to the surface to see the light of day. |

@Problem is no matter how much is made known to all, at the end of the day, Nothing comes of it. No Solutions, nada!! That has been the story in Nigeria for decades and we, the people continue to accept it. I mean I can say the average Nigeria already has enough dirt on many of these people but what has that given us? NothinG!! Can we please stop acting as if these are new occurences. This has been the trend for decades and still the same old people have remained in office and we the people continue to live and accept them. |

This is what happens when a house is divided among itself. Northern elements coming tell eastern elements how to manage their own affairs would have been unthinkable before the civil war. However, after northerners help divide the east against itself--- for the sake of oil, the result is unwanton neglect of the whole east, including the ND. |

Come to think of it, did any one from the east or Niger Delta put the Oil down there? You should know oil it is a natural resource and non of you put it there. You dont not have any reason to talk against the north because the abundance of oil there is not by your hard work, it' s from God and God never neglects his servants. I would advise not to look down at the northerners because it might turn to the other side some day. Try to learn from history, no nation or tribe can to continue to have abundance for ever. The maiguard, driver or nail cutter can rise above you or your children someday. God does not hate the northerners that is why he didnt give them oil, he created everyone and hence give them some respect. |
