I will like to bring to the attention of any movie Producers / Directors in the house of a Film Award that is being organized by a spanish NGO with Africa as focus.

Kindly see the details below.  There is also a website URL for reference.  PM me if you need any other detail not included here.

It may interest you to know that the 2006 edition was won by Mr. Gabriel Otonoku, a Nigerian documentary producer who also went home with 10,000 Euros. His winning entry was "Alaoma - Land of Beauty and Splendor" a documentary showcasing Nigerian Art and Culture.

International Harambee Award 3nd Edition “Communicating Africa”

A. General Information

The Harambee International Prize, will be awarded to artistic endeavours which educate and promote humanitarian efforts in Sub-Saharan African countries.

The Prize is open to those audiovisual products broadcast by a TV network or station dealing with ethnic, religious, social, economic, and cultural issues relevant to Sub-Saharan Africa.

The first edition of the Prize was organised in 2004 with 51 documentaries presented and the following are the winners1.the world according to Children: Eritrea' - Serena Laudisa; 2. 'Inhlangelo fund' by Michelle Makori y 3. Inkingi z'ubuntu by Lena Slachmuijlder. The Award ceremony was held in Rome at the Campidoglio on November 15th, 2004.

In the 2006 edition they presented 47 works and the following were the winners:-“Alaoma – Land of beauty and splendour” from Gabriel Otonoku, Nigeria. and -“When you say four thousand goobyes” from Jim Fahy, Ireland. The ceremonyfor the entrance prize took place on the 14th of November in the Protometeca room in Rome.


B. Characteristics of the Prize

1. The Prize is intended to challenge public opinion by drawing attention and concern to Africa until we can overcome:
- the silence: people’s unwillingness to respect Africa’s place in the international community;
- the stereotypes: limited views on Africa as a haven of war, social drama, health emergencies and poverty. A partial view that hides the real, everyday Africa.

2. Particular attention will be paid to those reports which emphasize the value of training as an indispensable means for a peaceful progress of African society.

3.The Prize has an economic stipend of 10,000 euros.The Jury can award it to one or two entrants. The economic donation is subject to the fiscal laws.

4. All audiovisual works that have been made and sent in the period from the 1st of October 2006 to the 30th of September 2008 to the end of December can participate in the competition.


C. Criteria

1. All works that have been produced and sent in the period from the 1st of October 2006 to the 30th of September 2008, that complete the requisite details signalled in paragraph b can also be included in the competition.

2. All reports should be submitted in two forms (VHS, DVD or CD), and will not be returned. All shipping charges are at the senders' expense.

3. Submissions should be accompanied by a membership Form (annex) and a statement by the broadcaster stating the day and time of the transmission.

4. Submissions should be accompanied by an authorization from the commercial rights holder stating permission for transmission in the context of the Award’s publication. The Prize committee will duly cite the producer during the transmission.

5. The reports can be edited in either English, French, Italian, Portuguese or Spanish. If done in any other language, subtitles in one of the aforementioned languages must be included.

6. A list of accepted productions will be published on the www.harambee.es and www.harambee-africa.org website.

7. The jury prize will be composed of people of diverse nationalities.The jury can decide to not award the prize and /or to give it to two people. In this case they can determine the financial sum. Their decisions will be final.

8. The award ceremony will take place in Madrid in November 2008. The exact date and location will be posted in advance on the Harambee website.

9. Upon submission, the Prize steering committee has the right to screen the documentaries for the press, in so far as they are only for cultural usage and not for monetary gain.

10. The Prize committee will recognize the documentaries' creators based upon whomever is so named on the membership application.

11. Participation in the Prize implies acceptance of the above mentioned rules.
