2014 must Consider business idea’s for
entreprenuers (pt2)
For those of us having entrepreneurship blood
running in our veins or those who can’t wait
for the mandatory four years or more that is
required to get a degree before starting their
own business, there is good news. You can
actually start a business right there on
campus. There are a lot of business
opportunities in our campuses that we can
take
up and become successful entrepreneurs. This
is a list of the top 15 businesses that can be
started right there on campus.
1. Blogging: Blogging has become one of the
simplest and most popular businesses to start,
requiring just a personal computer or a smart
phone and an internet connection. You can
actually become rich by blogging while in
school. You should blog on a topic you are
most passionate about; this would make the
blogging experience enjoyable. There are
several free blogging platforms, but if you
want to make some money while blogging, I
will recommend that you use Blogger from
Goggle. How about creating a blog for your
school or a blog for your department? These
are good places that you can start from. Don’t
allow this semester pass by without starting a
blog.
2. Event Management: I can hardly think of a
place where events are been organized as
frequently as on University campuses; ranging
from departmental events to faculty events or
even campus-wide events. Many of these
events are planned shabbily and almost always
turn out a disgrace. This inevitably means
there is a goldmine out there, why don’t you
step up to the occasion and start up an event
planning and management business on campus
and make some money. This is a low cost
business of course, because your staff will be
fellow students in need of some extra bucks,
and they would be paid based on job
availability.
3. Printing : This is one hell of an opportunity.
First of all, consider the amount of money you
and your colleagues spend per semester
printing, photocopying, and binding different
materials… then you will know how much you
can save and how much you can make from
fellow students by simply owning a three in
one printer; which would include a printer,
scanner and photocopier. With an investment
of less than twenty thousand naira you can
start your printing business. This is not even
as expensive as some of the smart phones that
we use.
4. Clothes sales: Virtually everyone in the
University craves looking good, and most will
spend extra cash on some designer wears. If
you have an eye for good fashion you might as
well turn this into a money-making venture for
yourself. You can just go to where these
clothes are sold at retail affordable prices, buy
them and bring them down to campus to sell
to your roommates and friends, and even to
other students at some profit. You just can
never tell, you might be on your way to
building a clothing empire.
5. Tutorials: Do you keep notes from courses
you took in your previous years? Or even the
knowledge you gained from past courses? And
do you have passion or special skill for
tutoring others? Then you can start a small
tutorial business on campus. You can charge
per class, per week or per course. You should
choose whatever amount you think is suitable
to you and affordable for your clients. Or you
can choose to conduct the classes free of
charge but then sell handouts or the solutions
to compilations of past questions. Bear in
mind, that you would need to hire other tutors
to assist you.
6. Social Media Consultant: Are you a social
media rockster? I mean, do you know how to
keep friends and followers coming back for
more? Then you might just want to make some
money off that talent. Start up a small social
media consultancy firm on campus.
Requirement will be a website or a blog where
you can offer cool social media tips and you
can also design a booklet or a manual that you
can sell to your followers and customers. Your
customers will be self-employed individuals,
website owners and small businesses who want
to gain some relevance in the social media
circle.
7. Freelance Writer : if you have the gift of
writing you can start a freelance writing career
or business. As a freelance writer, you can
write articles for various newspapers and
magazine and blogs for a fixed or varying fee,
both locally and abroad. You can subscribe to
Write Jobs’ newsletter; they will send you
notifications for writing jobs frequently.
8. Sewing: If you have learnt the skill of
sewing, then do not think that the skill is in
anyway useless now that you are in school. You
can use it to get yourself some extra cash. If
you don’t have a sewing machine or never
took
yours to school you can get yourself attached
to a tailor near your campus where you can
collect jobs on campus and go to work there.
You can also decide to open your tailoring
workshop and get people to work for you.
9. Dry cleaning: Believe it or not, there are
couples of ‘big boys/big girls’ who don’t have
time to wash their clothes on campus. This
may be because they are genuinely busy or
simply lazy, whichever way it is, if you have
the strength and time you can start a dry
cleaning business on campus and wash clothes
for both your fellow students and outsiders
for
a fee.
10. Photography: Do you have a good digital
camera and know how to take good shots?
Then why don’t you start taking pictures for
some money. Just get a good mobile printer to
go with your camera. You can take pictures of
fellow students and charge them for it. Or you
can simply take prominent photos of events,
places, objects and newsbreaks, and sell them
to news outlets or websites.
11. Food vending: Do you feel like the food
vendors in your school are not doing enough
to offer you and your colleagues’ good and
healthier meals? Do you know how to prepare
a better and well-packaged meal? Then why
don’t you start a food vending business, and
prepare better and well-packaged meals for
you and your colleagues. You can prepare your
meals once a day or three days a week or even
only weekends, depending on what suits you
most considering your academics. Surely your
friends and colleagues will prefer your better
meals.
12. Web designing: If you are good at web
designing you might consider opening a web-
designing business on campus. Your clients will
be small and medium businesses around the
state where your school is located. You might
also consider building a website related to
your school, like using Buddypress to develop
a social network for your school or you can
build a forum for discussion and gist for your
school.
13. Videography: You can actually make some
money selling videos just by using your camera
phone to record exclusive and important
events going on in your campus or even the
state where your school is. You can either sell
this video to media outlets or upload them on
your You-tube channel and make some money
from Google adverts.
14. Phone repair and pimping: With smart
phones taking over our campuses and causing
more confusion for the less geeky, it has also
opened up a new business for the geeks. If you
know how to repair and also love-vendor smart
phones, you can open a small smart phone
repair and pimping workshop in your school,
and make some money repairing and
beautifying smart phones.
15. Computer repairs: If you are good at
fixing personal computer you can open a small
business and help fellow students and fix their
laptops, tablets and pads for a fee. You can
run adverts on student’s billboards with your
phone number attached to it, you can also
open your own website where you offer
tutorials on how to fix smaller problems and
put in your address there so you can be
contacted.
In conclusion, I would want you to bear these
two things in mind. Firstly, not all these
businesses are practicable in all schools.
Therefore, you are to use your initiative and
find the one that matches your personality
(passion, interest or talent) and environment.
Secondly, you do not necessarily need to rent
a shop to start most of these businesses; some
of them would work out just fine in your room
or corner. You would only need to print an
information telling people about your
business, your phone number, and room
number. When your business gets reputation
word of mouth will do the rest. Also the
opportunities listed above does not come with
ready-made success, you will still need a great
dose of patience, courage and perseverance to
succeed.
