Nigeria 2 - 1 Japan
TIANJIN, China (AP) - Victor Obinna scored one goal and set up another to lead Nigeria to a 2-1 victory over Japan on Sunday, bolstering the Africans' claim for a place in the men's Olympic soccer quarterfinals.

Obinna found the net in the 58th minute and set up Victor Anichebe to score on another counterattack in the 74th minute as Japan's defense was exposed on each flank.

Second-half substitute Yohei Toyoda scored for Japan in the 79th minute, and his team continued to create chances, but heavy rain from a thunderstorm for the final 10 minutes of the match hampered its chances.

The victory gave Nigeria four points in Group B with one game remaining, while Japan was left with zero and virtually no chance of advancing.

"Of course there were mistakes, but overall I'm happy with my team," Nigeria coach Samson Siasia said. "We just want to enjoy the moment."

Obinna finished a chance that came from the right wing, when Solomon Okoronkwo broke free and sent the ball into Promise Isaac. He took a touch and was about to shoot on the turn, but Obinna raced in from his left midfield spot to strike a right-footed kick from the top of the penalty area.

Obinna then burst down the left flank and sent a crossing pass to the other side of the penalty area, where Anichebe brought the ball down with one touch and struck a shot between goalkeeper Shusaku Nishikawa and the near post.

Japan's hopes were revived when Nigerian keeper Ambruse Vanzekin hit an errant goal kick, and Toyoda beat a close offside call on a pass from Hiroyuki Taniguchi to score Japan's first goal in two games.

Toyoda revived Japan's hopes when he beat a close offside call, took a pass from Hiroyuki Taniguchi and hit the ball past goalkeeper Ambruse Vanzekin.

Japan made three changes from the team that lost 1-0 to the United States on Thursday, one replacement each in defense, midfield and attack.

"This result means the Japanese Olympic chance will stop," Japan coach Yasuharu Sorimachi said. "We have one game remaining and we'll try to win it."

Nigeria fielded the same 11, and - for the first half - had the same results. The Africans had more possession and chances, and the Japanese - also like its defeat to the Americans - seemed content to absorb pressure and try for a goal on the counter.

The match featured an oddity when Olubayo Adefemi was made to leave the game in the 49th minute because he started the second half with the same shirt number (12) as teammate Ebenezer Ajilore. He returned 3½ minutes later with his correct jersey and number (13).
