Sistillwater it's not just about numbers even if Nigeria had gone to the Olympic games with 1000 athletes, and with our ill preparedness and all that, i bet you not even a single medal will be won except the hope everyone is having now in the soccer team. it's not just about the number. check out the MLB, NBA, NHL, MLS, NFL dang! America spend a lot on Sports right from the college to the professional level, you could easily get scholarships and assistants through sports and thats attracting more people to it.
As such, they're able to get the best of the best come out and represent them in big events such as the Olympic games. Not forgetting the financial gains generated too.

1st world countries are always going to have the upperhand, with better resources and a good standard of living, so they can easily afford (and are willing) to train and prepare their athletes well.

I think the question should be "How does China dominate the olympics"?  How do you measure dominance?  By the number of medals won overall, by the number of gold medals won, by the quantity of athletes participating in each sporting event, or what?  As of last count, China is leading the US. by a thumping 25 gold medals. To be correct, American athletes have not been domineeringly superior across the slate as you might be falsely led to believe, but they have done an exceptional job.  As precisely pointed out by dreeldee, quantity is not synonymous with dominance. America has the most medals in the Olympics thus far(leading China by 1 measly medal, courtesy of the bronzes they amass), but China IMHO has also been overwhelmingly dominant - the Chinese have done just as good as the Americans - if not better.

They have everything required to make you successful and they have a program that brings out talents year in year out in schools and neighbourhoods
