Can anyone please tell me precisely, the number of Universities (Federal, State and Private) in Nigeria?

Apparently, I was wrong in my MSc Thesis where I stated that we have 48. I later stumbled on a document quoting Fabian Osuji (Fmr Edu. minister): "Nigeria’s 54 existing universities have the capacity to enroll 200,000 students — less than 15 percent of the 1.5 million applications the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board received last year" (Source: This Day, January 27, 2004).

Thank God it's not easy to get the precise figure via the Internet (My accessors cannot find out!), I would've been shaking!!! Are you thinking of www.nuc.edu.ng? Come of that thought! I got ma 48 from there - It's a big shame though.

Please find me the accurate figure if you can.

PS: Please correct me if I was wrong about Osuji. Is he former or present? You can't blame me (since we seemingly have a 4 ministers/term policy), can you?

I am in the process of designing a standard free and partially fee based education e-portal for the teeming nigerian educational sector.

In my research, I discovered 76 Universities and 5 university cenntres and 17 other degree awarding universities.

There are other classifications which I have made, and I am yet to make this public due to current state of the web project.
