Howdy folks! grin I know there are different resources out there but I believe it will be fun to grasp as much as we can from this forum. I believe that every Nigerian should strive to know a thing or two about at least three other ethnic groups. They do not necessarily have to be fluent in their languages, a few reasonable sentences here and there will go a long way. In my own case I have decided to start with Ijaw, Yoruba and Efik. My Ijaw completely sucks, I do know some little Yoruba but I should do better. I can speak some meaningful Efik but can't put them to paper. . .

We can start by having someone translate the following in Ijo (Ijaw). . . please folks correct me if I am wrong, I think the real thing is Ijo and not Ijaw.

1. How are you?

2. I am so hungry I could eat a cow. (Okay maybe we should stick with simple stuff for now grin grin)

3. Good morning

4. Goon night

5. Have a safe journey

6. I am standing outside

*If anyone has the Ijaw alphabet, this is the time to post it*

Are you an Ijawian?
Re: Let's Speak Ijo(ijaw) by grafikdon: 5:05am On Aug 29, 2008
grin grin

Maybe. . . considering there was an Ijaw great aunt (is there even anything like great aunt?) somewhere in my extended family lipsrsealed lipsrsealed
Re: Let's Speak Ijo(ijaw) by DeepZone: 5:11am On Aug 29, 2008
Is that what they call Ijaws? Ijawian? so ibos are iboian?

@Grafik,
are you Ibo or Ibibio?
Re: Let's Speak Ijo(ijaw) by Ibime(m): 10:25am On Aug 29, 2008
Ijaw has different dialects. Okrika is different from Kalabari which is different from Ibani. Western Ijaw is also different from Eastern Ijaw. It is just like Portuguese and Spanish. They understand each other but they cannot speak in the other tongue.

For example, for 'How are you', a Kalabari man would ask 'Tobra?' and you would answer 'Ibim' or 'Ibiwirere'  (I am good)

An Okrika man would ask 'Idanloku?' and you would answer 'Ibime'

1. tọbra?
2. why can't you say buru tari e? well i cant translate that!!! maybe Ibime can help.
3. Ibaate
4. baawẹrịya
5. Dein na mu
6. a etela emi

now this is Kalabari which some people would say is a dialect of Ijaw or eastern Ijaw as Ibime rightly said. You can go to www.kalabari-dictionary.org to find the alphabets

I thought Kalabari's dialect was more Western Ijaw due to their later migration? Nembe are the ones who speak the original Ijaw.

Na man, only basic greetings and how to ask for food and stuffs. I had to wait till school holidays to hear proper Okrika cos my pops hardly ever spoke it, only occasionally. Even sometimes, when I am around my village people, you find them speaking Igbo mixed with Okrika because they descended from Igbo slaves.

Na, I'm from Ogan-Ama/George-Ama - grandparents divorced hence I spent all my time in Ogan-Ama (grandmomsie's side) although my surname is George. Many Ogans are descended from Ibo slaves, yes - but remember that the last Amanyanabo of Okrika was the late Chief Samuel Ogan. Nothing spoil, we are fully integrated.

Wrong notion to base the Igbo language in Okrika on slavery. Okrika were originally peopled by Igbos before the Izon language came in, hence the reason why your people speak a transition language of Igbo/Okrika.

The Igbo language spoken should be strongly Aro based, Aro is a leading figure in Igboland. The language didn't come in by slavery.

Okrikans are not originally igbos oga, don't act like you know other people's history more than them when in reality, you know nothing at all. Okrika people don't speak igbo, Okrikans speak the Kirike dialect which is part of the ijo language, any igbos in Okrika are there though slave trade.

No no no. We need to do away with lies. Whatever one wants to identify as is his personal decision. But the truth must always be spoken.

Okrika did not even deal much on slaves because Bonny would not allow them and there was nothing they could do to change that. Bonny was too powerful. The Okrika were originally Igbo. Then the Ijaw came in later. Screenshot attached (from 1800s).

What do you mean by no no no? I'm telling you about my people history you're busy arguing with me wtf! Do you know how many Amas,Biris or Polos we have in Wakirike Bese? Saying that all Okrika people came from Afam in Ibo country is an insult to Wakirike Bese communities.

Last paragraph, don't you read properly? I said Okrika were originally peopled by Igbos before an Ijaw migration into the place perhaps up to 600 years now. This means the people in Okrika today have both ancestry and so therefore the first language and culture, Igbo, should not be deemed to have come through slavery. That is very incorrect.

Try to understand what I'm saying.

Okrikans are ijaws who migrated from the delta, present day Delta and Baysela states that's why we go by the name Wakirike Bese.

We don't speak igbo as it's not part of our culture, those Okrikans who speaks igbo or practice igbo culture are descendant of Igbo slaves.

If Okrikans were igbos as you claim, how come there's zero influence of Igbo culture in Okrika? How come we don't bear igbo names?
