I was having a discussion with a group of friends and this topic
came up. For those naija people who dont know what Chick Flicks (naija people
out of the country will be more use to what i am saying are they are films that
are like soap operas eg foreign ones are Hitch, my best friend's wedding,
Pretty woman, In love and basket ball,Notting Hill,Titanic , Never Been Kissed ,
Notting Hill , Legally Blonde , Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood , Love Actually ,
Mona Lisa Smile , The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants , and The Holiday to name
a few. Theyremind me of M&B novels i read when i was in secondary school. The
relationship usually have happy endings. Well i guess it is from the woman's point
of view and i guess it is like a tv ad. If anyone follows the advices there you may get
lost. Common advice that is always given to guys in this film(except Hitch and Love actually)
"Just be your and the girl will like you for who you are" and we ladies all know that is bullish.
What they tell us ladies is that beauty comes from within well if this is the case how come
bad girls gets all the good man. The say love defeats all but there is not truth.

I have to agree with you Tope2000. Pretty Woman is definitely misleading in so many ways. Just be a prostitute and you will marry a rich guy that will love you for who you are(prostitute). Lol. Oh and i have to say The Little Mermaid, another misleading love story. Just disobey your father and you can become a real human, married to a rich man on land. Pretty misleading of you ask me.

Akinagirl what about Hitch, i think the film has some very
good advice for a lot of guys out there (my oyfriend told me
that he has gotten many girls including me from some of the
advices in the film like "Without gily and game there is no girl"
and "60% of all communication is body language and 30% is
voice tone, so what ever you are saying isnt coming out of
your mouth" but the end of the film was so fake.

I agree most of d advise given can be interpreted as BS, but some of them do make valid points like how a simple misunderstandings and pride can cause a beautiful relationship to end. . .

Fairy tale happy endings, altho not always as pretty and neat as potrayed in d movies, do happen and not so rarely too. i guess its all about finding the balance. . . realising that life can pleasantly surprise but not sitting around waiting on our fairly tale ending.

when i was younger i used to believe in the 'be Mr. nice guy and all the girls will trip' yarns but somehow over time i metamophorsed and now that i think of it i have infinitely more success with females than before

OMG am I the only unashamed watcher of chick flicks? I don't like movies that don't have happy endings and I love love stories but only those with happy endings i.e. chick flicks (no Nicholas Sparks ish though that man is wicked absolutely horrible with his depressing stories e.g. The Notebook (ugh) or A Walk to Remember both of which some pple call chick flicks but really, )

Ok so PRETTY WOMAN has already been given as an example. What about MADE OF HONOR? Did anyone see that this summer? Absolutely bogus!!! Yes ruin my wedding to an absolutely wonderful, gorgeous guy who happens to be rich etc just because you suddenly discover that "we're in love" and you must tell me like right before the wedding. It's like guys who think they should tell you when they like you, do guys think girls [/i]enjoy[i] deliviering set-downs, I hate it, I hate to say no but i don't have to like you just because you like me so don't make it weird (excuse me- mini-rant). LOVE ACTUALLY also had the same tell the girl themes (e.g. with Chiwetel's best friends feelings for Kiera Knightley the wife and with the little boy).

Another example, movies where there's deception like the guy went out with the girl as a bet e.g. SHE'S ALL THAT, the girl deceives the guy through 90% of the movie e.g. NEVER BEEN KISSED, SHE'S THE MAN etc, we all know that if these situations were in real life the deceiver will be told to carry their belongings and go because they're untrustworthy all their sappy crying apologies would not change things, imagine a guy goes out with you as a bet, hmmm it can't happen that we end up together sorry.

And then not to be a snob (and then watch me be the biggest snob of life), but all those movies with unlikely pairings where the super rich/well-adjusted guy eschews his family's/friend's expectations and ends up marrying/getting together with the "unsuitable" girl from the wrong side of the tracks, like how many times does this happen in real life, honestly honetly hardly ever!!! But in movies it's rampant e.g. PRETTY WOMAN, BRIDGET JONES (1 & 2), THE PRINCE AND ME, ALONG CAME POLLY, EVER AFTER, DIRTY DANCING, DIRTY DANCING HAVANA NIGHTS (ok in both DDs its the vice-vera), MAID IN MANHATTAN, NOTTING HILL (aren't we all waiting for our A-list hollywood spouses). Like I'm not saying it never happens because of course it does, I'm just saying it's not like in the movies,

And these are just a few examples, like there are hundreds!!! It's like when guys toast girls using like Westlife lyrical theory. It's over. Don't do that. I feel bad for guys sha. It's tough. Because it''s like don't be yourself, but then also don't be too like the guys we gell for in cheesy movies or in cheesy lyrics,

Yes you are right it is hard for guys and we girls dont see it from
that point of view most of the time. But if any guy wants to toast
a girl, he should first find out what he wants to do with his life then
go after it with all his heart. In that state of mine he can get any girl
