You have to be pushing for at least N400per kilo live weight especially if you are rearing pigs the right way, giving them the right feed, right accommodation, right medicines and paying your staff a living wage. The quality of your livestock should dictate price, don't undersell yourself as the middlemen never do. At Jessam cattle ranch and farms we sell when we have a promotional offer for N400 per kg but normal can range anything up to N450per kilo. Our pigs are well raised and are not fatty. Since we have pigs of various sizes we can find a pig weight that matches our clients budget. So if they have N40k we simply divide by say N400 per kilo meaning we find them a pig that weighs 100kg. We believe in the quality of our livestock and don't budge below N400per kilo, many walk away but eventually come back to buy from us as they realise the quality of our pigs, the amount of meat they get, also they know that we are reliable regular source.

Jessam,
You are absolutely right. We are a growing farm and should hopefully within the next year or so be in a position to influence both the buyers and co farmers. The cost of feeds, buying breeder stock and other associated cost are constantly rising so the sales price must also increase if we are to remain in business. One of the ways to ensure that farmers get adequate return for their investment and efforts is for us all to network both at the local and national levels.

Vicky3,

Start up loans in piggery or indeed any venture in my opinion will be difficult to come by, but not imposible. Though it looks like the current federal government is going to be very supportive of agricultural ventures, but the issue is that banks are more disposed to giving loans to existing businesses with track record of success who want to grow biggger. In talking to some farmers during my recent trip to Nigeria, i gathered that banks give agricultural loan for about 9% per year which is pretty good if one can get it. First Bank was mentioned as an example and i actually saw the approval for some miilions at 9% from FCMB. The issue is that these are already well established farmers. In my experience, venture capitalist loans are easily gotten from family and friends.

What is the general take of the well established farmers in the house?

its could be tricky esp when u buy growers frm farms wc lacks good breeds growers vary in sizes and coupled wt d fact d u lack the esp in d biz. Your best bet is to have breeders frm among them and sell the rest. You need to seek counsel frm experienced farmers around you.

Otegazx,

Not likely thay you will be able to pay back N4 Million loan in 3 years. Depending on what scale you are looking at, 4M may not be enough for infrastructure, i.e., pens, bore-hole etc. However, if you able to get a decent facility to rent, it may be possible.
Goodluck

My 10kobo advice to those who wants to go into piggery. I have been reading the comments here for sometime. But I think I should put in my advice now. Some comments here are hilarious and do not depict reality. However I will try to list somethings that I think should be done.

1. A pig farmer is first a cost manager, if not your expenses could run beyond ur plan and u cant stop at that point.
2. 80% of ur time should be spend to drive down the cost of ur feed. Research online for chepeast source of food and combinations that gives best yield.
3. The greatest challenge you will get is cheap source of protein for ur animals. Remember even humans in nigeria do not have enough protein not to talk of animals
4. Start small. This can never be over emphasis. It is not about ur cash availability rather it is about learnings. You definitely need to learn. But why do you want to learn with ur entire cash. The man that wants to start with 25 sows you need to watch it. Do u have enough experience to handle such. If 25 sows gives birth to average of 5 that gives you 125. Do u have d experience to handle such numbers. When they turn to grower cost of feeding will nearly drive you mad. Also without experience u may loose majority of them.
5. Go to a training school or do attachment somewhere. You cannot leave ur business in the hands of some other people who will tell stories that touch the heart because you dont know. Lagos state government had a 3month training school in oko oba that is not costly but allow you to manage it with ur other activities.

6.specialise in pen design. Cost of construction of pen is also one of the things that drives farmers mad. Go online and research cheaper method of construction buy picture books online that teach DIY they are readily available just Google it. Amazon used to deliver books to me in nigeria some years back and they are very cheap 18dollars or so and it gets to u withing 3wks. Do it yourself cos cost is important. I saw the pen design posted by someone that is a costly way to build pig farm. Imarging if you have 2000 animals how many of such will u build.

7. To manage cost or to be efficient and get rich thru piggery requires you to run a large pig far. Cos the energy and time invested in running a farm with 200 animals will not be much different from running a farm with 2000 animals but the cost saving different is huge.

I hope I have made a bit of sense with this my posting. Remember ur goal is to be an elite farmer not backyard one.
I do hope he values your advice.

Marketing is the biggest problem we have in pig farming. It may be earlier for those in Lagos for obviois reaaons, but inIbadan for instance, it is still hard to sell for above N270. Iwas shockedthat a kilo now goes for N350 inLagos and N320 in Ogun, but last week, I couldn't seel six pigs for N270. I think we should talk more on marketing since all our efforts will make no sense if we don't get good prices for our pigs.

There isn't marketing problem in pig farming!

different factors are responsible for potential price differences.

cost of production in ibadan is different from Ota.

most farmers lack social skills until when they need help or want to sell.

The more you network positively the more you become informed about opportunities in the business.

another factor for breeders is the quality of your pigs.

Farm location. is your farm road unmotorable or deliberately located in a remote area.

attitude to agents, attendants workers, buyers and people that introduced you to the business.

Always tip when necessary and be accessible no matter how busy or wealthy you are.

currently i can't meet demand for pigs!!!
