Well, a quick consult of the research turned up this study.....

Antidiabetic and antihyperlipidemic potential of Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench. in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats
V. Sabitha, S. Ramachandran,1 K. R. Naveen,1 and K. Panneerselvam

Results of said study show that

The present study results, first time, support the antidiabetic and antihyperlipidemic potential of A. esculentus(okra) peel and seed powder in diabetic rats.

It should be noted that

1.This is an animal study.....for the study to be verified in humans, a randomized controlled trial comparing the anti diabetic potential of okra vs regular antidiabetic drugs would have to be conducted (and mind you......that is a trial with a lot of ethical issues)

2.Before we even get to the RCT....we have to do phase 0 to phase 3 testing in humans....and that can take up to 15 years, if not longer to go through all 3 phases.

3.Even then...the study cited basically looks at whether okra can lower blood glucose levels.....the same way your diabetes drug does so...not whether okra can cure diabetes.

4.Thus.....we are still far from claiming okra as a cure, or even as a therapy for the management of diabetes.

So, don't drink the okra water. It won't cure your diabetes. But eating the okra could help keep your blood sugar low.

Regarding curing diabetes, the goal would be to develop some form of therapy that would lead to the regeneration of insulin producing Beta cells in the pancreas.Stem cell therapy offers some potential.....but a cure for diabetes based on that route is still decades away.
