igbonla: Sadly, those failing WAEC will end up as your local govt chairmen, governors, members of national assembly, ministers, advisers and president tomorrow. Simple reason Nigeria and Nigerians will continue to suffer until whenever.

Yes GEJ and madam peace typify this education. He is PhD and she is a Permanent Secretary for God's sake!

Baby mama: Please how are WAEC markers selected
Are you folks secondary school teachers teaching the subjects you mark or anybody including job applicants can apply and mark the WAEC nwa nu

I remember hearing that Nigeria's papers are marked in Ghana and other countries while we mark theirs
So it ain't so?
They are mostly secondary school teachers (including principals and vice principals) and youth corp members. The marking schemes for subjects are agreed upon through an open plenary workshop that lasts one week .

I forgot to mention that. Almost everybody in a center writes the same thing, in fact a candidate forgot the photocopy of one of the answers in his/her booklet (teacher involved malpractice) and another forgot a page of the keypoint in the booklet. After 9months of Sitting at Home by Public School Pupils and Students in Benue State, The State Govt Gladly announced to the World that it had concluded plans to Privatize ALL public Schools in the State! Thus Effectively Denying the Children of Akara Sellers,Garri Sellers,Road Sweepers, Farmers etc the opportunity to get Educated!
And despite being a Signatory to various international treaties that guarantee free and compulsory universal education to children, the FG decides to turn a blind eye!

Our Govts are always quick to justify the failure of the public school system as if Nigeria is the only country in the world that practices it.(Even the USA runs public schools)
Sadly, a lot of these politicians attended public schools, yet are determined to see its end.

Ask Teachers to attend Screening Exams, and NUT declares an Indefinite Strike.

I cannot blame Students who 2go, Badoo etc because their Counterparts the World over do these and still pass! What we need to do is to emphasize to them the benefits of Qualitative and not Quantitative Internet Use..By now, All Secondary School Assignments should be such that Students have to source the Answers online, thus maximizing the benefits of internet.

The buck stops at the table of the Govt. People are being paid to assess the performance of Students over the years in various Standardized Exams(JAMB etc) and these people aren't doing there jobs!

People are being paid to Supervise Teachers and School Standards in States! They aren't doing their Jobs!

I attended my Senior Secondary School Education in Imo State, and as at 2000-2003, there was NO Private Second Sch in the state better than GSSO..we represented the state in all competitions (Cowbell,Peak,NNPC,STAN,etc)
I give kudos to the Govt of Achike Udenwa back then..Private Schools were for people who couldn't make it into Public Schools.

#if you see an Indian, Japanese or Korean Child Reading, you'll know Nigeria is a Joke.

It is a pity that even the so call perfect educationists in this thread condemning the op for pointing out the bad state of our public schools fail to understand that the op is just trying to say that our public schools are not doing well. Some are even saying the op should stop condemning the students. I think the major way of accessing the performance of the public schools is accessing the performance of their students. The man said, that our politicians send their children abroad for studies, while they leave our public schools to go bad, yet people here are condemning the op and finding fault with his written english, which could be typographical errors. Perfection in english language is not a measure of overall intelligence, So pls stop the hate stuff and face the fact that the op has made. This is simply the reason why Nigeria is not improving, when people are bold to point out errors, people find funny and senseless excuse to justify the bad state of things, they leave the fact and try to find fault with the person.

childrend of today are far better an advanced than those "olden" days because as time passes civilization takes a few steps. the fact is nigerians tend to move faster than their shadow i.e try to sky rocket their economic/natural growth by using risky measures such as bribery, examination malpractice etc. 80% of private schools cheat with MONEY! so as to get more kandydates register at their schools. public schools do not stand a great chance, not every student can pay the wicked invigilator/examiner.
Re: Just Finished Marking WAEC. I Cry For Our Future. by tony9k: 6:07am On Jul 01, 2014
The precarious situation of the educational sector in the country is succinctly depicted by the fact that:
- the op had some grammatical errors in his post
- when he was stylishly corrected other posters did not know that there were flaws
- the op now came back with the defence that the had higher degrees in Economics and not English and the flaws were was acceptable
- most of the posters were misplacing tenses in their responses

The pathetic state of public schools is common knowledge and the report is not unexpected. The phenomenal growth of private schools in all states of the country is an indication of the loss of confidence in public schools and it cuts across the entire sector primary to tertiary.

The solution is for govt (yes govt) to substantially invest in education - personnel, infrastructure and training for a turnaround. We should take a cue from the state of public schools in Britain from where we copied. There are private schools abroad but most public schools have a minimum acceptable level.

The rot in public schools and indeed private schools reflect the rot in our mentality as a nation. Most people want to get rich quick without hardwork. Our youth are busy pressing phone, listening to wazobia fm, watching so much tv or and going to so many church activities. The family system has all but collapsed as parents are not around to raise up their children.

The way forward is to return back and institute a change process where hardwork is rewarded. To do away with "stomach infrastructure" politics, the church should establish good schools which should be very affordable. The FG should pump money into federal colleges and ensure standards are met.

juwoonn: As we conclude this year's June/July WAEC marking, I cry for the future of these students.
I marked 645 scripts in Economics for some Onitsha schools and only 2 candidates scored above 40/80 in paper2. One scored 45 and the other 48 while more than 80% scored below 20. Some 2/80, 1/80 despite my simple marking. Honestly like 3 candidates wrote only "PLEASE HELP ME" in their answer booklets.

One thing I noticed is that all the centers I marked are public school centers. What has gone wrong with our public schools?

A lot of professors in Nigeria today were products of public schools, our president and most Governors are products of public schools, but why have they taken their children abroad, to private schools and destroy the public schools for the less privileged.
no offense bro, but I tell u that is very wrong for you to open a thread here all because u mark waec script, in case u don't know, marking of waec script should be a private thing, not something you have to make public, ok you make it public now and even mention the locality, what if someone from that area send you personal message now and ask you the name of the school, from there you know what could happen next. I'm extremely sure you not the only one marking waec script here, many people here do mark waec(both the public and private) and neco, but they don't have to make it public because is meant to be official. I surprise I saw this in FP, mode brain self don knock for putting this in front page instead of closing thread...

Idoma Likita: when you see a korean, indian or japanese child reading you'll know nigeria is a joke
i will appreciate it if you read your txt carefully before you post, nigerians are not what you think... that post was highly racial. some nigerian youths read till they go psycho! it aint all about only reading... the fact is what do they invent...? isnt that the primary purpose of education..? Bringing bout new theories and ideas that can make our nation better and powerful.

Really pathetic.

I haven't marked WAEC scripts before, but I have helped my mum mark her students scripts and I can attest to what y'all are saying. From bad writing to copied works and the please help me ish. Most times my mum would tell me to give them extra marks since they don't know and in class they won't listen when classes go on. Does she even need to tell me before I give them extra for wasting their ink.

I can't blame them that much because learning conditions are that bad. Blame those who choose to celebrate mediocrity over substance and have failed to put their priorities straight.

I agree with you on this one,Marking waec scripts suppose to be condifential, why come on nairaland and tell us you marked waec scripts even giving areas? I also weep for you the markers cos in those days no professor or teachers will come online and broadcast that they are marking waec scripts,in as much as you might not mean any harm i just think its not good coming to nairaland telling us i helped my cousin to mark or i saw the one my girlfriend was marking, the Op was still considerate but the others to me are just here to show off like they are some big wig in the education sector..

Multiple questions is the solution you are very right but i think it will be the most convenient one for them to cheat on,believe me i honestly don't see a solution unless they bring an hausa man that doesnt speak english or yoruba to the west,a igbo man that doesnt speaks or understand english or hausa to the north and then a yoruba man to the north this way the external invigilators might not collect bribe, otherwise i also weep for naija as the Op have said ooo grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin

Baby mama: It is time WAEC changed to multiple choice questions only, with electronic marking
This method is so subjective and archaic not to talk of the possibility of people's answer sheets being used to wipe poo poo inadvertently while in the marker's possession.
Imagine someone admitting to helping someone else mark WAEC? shocked shocked shocked shocked
Nigeria Jaga jaga

@op,what u just witnessed is not new.

I can remember our parent's time when they trek some kilos everyday to school and yet they took it serious and studied very well. All d gadgets we have now were not available to them.
But now, kids are comfortable browing 247 rather than reading. Teachers r poorly paid they were gulliable to lazy students and selfish parents.
And some school authorities are just after the cash.
At times what I read here makes me cringe.
Very pathetic.

onitsha smalll . i served in d north.. we write answers on d board while they copy... or draw
as in DRAWING YOUR WORDS.. the way u write ur M A T H S and so on...
i lost hope.
u could sit and criticize a corper helping these kids. but note
1. they had only 3 permanent staff teaching the whole 6 arms of the secondary school cos they relied on corpers..
2. they never repeat a class. flog a child or if a child doesnt like ur face.. he or she postpones schooling till the next year.. joining her mates in d new class

even in tech. drawing.. after helping one construct the answers on her sheet... before i came back.. she had used biro to thicken out the construction lines saying they weren't clear enough
