Most Scary Man in the Middle East: Meet the Caliph Who Occupied Iraq and Syria He was born in Iraq 43 years ago. He worked in different areas for Islamist terrorist organizations. Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi, the leader of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant, forces Americans to understand that the campaign never ended. The world feared Bin Ladin and then Al Baghdadi came. Three years after the assassination of Osama Bin Ladin, the western intelligence agencies and Middle Eastern countries are finding themselves facing Global Jihad’s new star: Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi, who heads the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant, otherwise known as ISIS, which is gradually taking over parts of Iraq and Syria. Even though he is 43, Al Baghdadi is already one of the most extremist and dangerous radical Islamists operating. Al Baghdadi’s activities over the years earned him the title of Caliph, after a committee of Sunni Muslim religious extremists crowned him as the Prophet Muhammed’s representative on earth. Iraq, which suffers from him, is also his birthplace. He was born in the city of Samarra in 1971. As a young man, he was a member of Sunni Islamist groups within the country and after the US-led invasion in 2003, he joined Al Qaeda. In the framework of his struggle, he was caught and served an American military prison term. It was even reported that he was killed near the Iraqi-Syrian border. After eight years, Al Baghdadi won the approval of the US Treasury to declare him a terrorist. After that, two previous leaders of the Iraqi branch of Al Qaeda were assassinated. In 2010, Al Qaeda gave him the command to lead fighters in Iraq. His terrorist activities and cruel guerrilla warfare against foreign forces within the country contributed to strengthening his position and Al Baghdadi became strong beyond all expectations in the shadow of the Syrian Civil War. Al Baghdadi brought about the historic unity between the Iraqi and Syrian branches of Al Qaeda, which became the Al Nusra Front. It later on split again. Since the tightening of the hunt for Al Baghdadi, he now works underground. Last year, American intelligence claims to have evidence that he is hiding in Syria, but after a few days, the trail was blurred until new reports were received last month that Al Baghdadi is hiding in northern Iraq. http://jerusalemonline.com/docs?rid=6176 |
