Primary school teachers in Benue state under the aegis of the National Union of Teachers(NUT) yesterday suspended their nine month strike. The striking teachers have downed tools since October 2013 to press for the implementation of the 18000 naira minimum wage by the state government. Governor Gabriel Suswam had claimed that the state government lacked adequate funds to commence payment of the wage. The Benue state government had last Monday in Abuja reversed its decision and detailed a delegation led by the deputy Governor, Chief Steven Lawani, who signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the National body of the NUT to begin the payment and also attend to other demands of the teachers. The development prompted the chairman of the NUT, Comrade Godwin Anya, to announce the suspension of the prolonged strike. According to Anya, suspension of the strike will take effect from 7th July. He also appealed to teachers to resume classes and urged the state government to abide by the terms of the MOU. Source:- Leadership newspaper.
