Of the twenty games between these two sides, Germany have won just three times, Brazil have won twelve and there have been five draws.

Amazingly for teams who have eight world cups between them Brazil and Germany have only ever met once in the World Cup, in the Final of 2002 in Japan. On that occasion, Brazil were the comfortable 2-0 winners.

Germanys three wins in 1968, 1986 and 1993 were all achieved on home soil whilst Brazil have not found winning in Germany too difficult with five of their twelve victories recorded on German soil.

For two giants of the game it seems bizarre that Brazil are so apparently dominant over Germany with four times as many wins as the Europeans. With England also having a very similarly poor record against Brazil it could be assumed that the major European teams are giving Brazil far too much respect, believing the hype that goes with the South Americans and thinking that they are technically and competitively superior.

However other European teams have a decent record against the kings of South America – Italy have won 5, lost 7 and drawn 2 against Brazil and France have a lost 5, won 4, drawn 4 record (and a 3-1 positive record in World Cups!) so perhaps it is just Germany and England that treat games against Brazil with too much caution?

It would certainly seem to suggest that should Brazil face Germany in an important game, that on a historical basis at least, Brazil should be very strong favourites in the betting odds.

Brazils victory in 2002 saw them achieve their fifth World Cup victory and was also notable for Brazilian captain Cafu's third appearance in a World Cup final – a record that looks unlikely to be beaten.

As is nearly always the case, Brazil were favourites for the game on reputation but also on the strength of their performances in the tournament which had seen them see off Belgium, England and Turkey in the knockout stages. Germany had been far less impressive in qualifying for the final, managing three 1-0 victories over an unlikely series of opponents in Paraguay, USA and South Korea.

The final was billed as an attacking force in Brazil against the German defensive stronghold but this proved not to be the case as the Germans played aggressively in the first half of an entertaining final. Both teams had a number of chances with player of the tournament Ronaldo uncharacteristically missing three excellent opportunities for Brazil.

Ronaldo made up for his first-half failures after the break and pounced on a blunder from the German goalkeeper Oliver Khan to steer home the first goal after sixty-seven minutes. The Brazilian striker put the game out of the Germans reach with a top quality finish twelve minutes later to score his second and not even a ridiculous haircut could stop him being crowned top scorer at the tournament.

Veteran defender Cafu raised the World Cup for the fifth time for Brazil to rapturous support.

Brazil have now appeared in seven World Cup Finals, losing only twice, to Uruguay in 1950 and to France in 1998.

The 2002 team that destroyed Brazil marked the end of an era of great Brazillian team spirit and football. The present is a shadow of the former team. I'm tipping Germany to go through, irrespective of the records.

Two great footballing countries lock horns on Tuesday in a quest to proceed to the final. The host must conquer the greatest obstacle on their way to playing the final. The Germans, however must see the host out of the tournament on their soil. An uphill task, I call it.
