An IFV (infantry fighting vehicle) is designed to engage in Actual combat while also carrying troops. IFV's are always armed with 20 or 30mm cannons and above. So, they take troops to the frontlines and remain in the frontlines providing fire-support.

An APC (armoured personnel carrier) is designed only to carry troops only. They are armed with defensive weapons only, A GPMG or a 50 CAL. Take troops to the frontline and leave, as they do not have the Armour or Fire-power to support troops.

It seems you’re stuck in the past, I don’t think I made it clear when I used the comparative analogy of sports cars and how the term has evolved to include a host of other vehicles , such as sports sedans, coups and even SUV’s.

This trend of evolved vehicles is replicated in military circles as well, in this regard you’ve just completely misrepresented the concept of MRAP, APC & IFV. Things have moved on now 15 years ago or more the definitions you present would be largely concise. However, NOT ANYMORE things are much more fluid and not rigid.

You have not taken cognisance of the evolving and modular nature of the modern armoured military vehicles responding to the changing threats and new innovations in weaponry and tactics. This somewhat new approach has given birth to the descriptive terminology MRAV (Multi-Role Armoured Vehicle) which is more apt to describe the multi functionalism of modern armoured vehicles as well as the MRAP.

Below is a link giving a description of the attributes of the Patria APC and for good measure a youtube video.

If a Picture is Worth a Thousand Words, then Is a Video Worth a Million? Nuff said that should really be the end of the discussion.

I chose the Patria modular platform because of its resilient armour(can stand RPG7's & 30mm cannons), amphibious capability (great for Chad basin )and multiple adapted weapon stations, 30mm Cannons, 40mm grenade launchers and or 12.7mm MG, etc , highly accurate night and day. Target acquisition software means you can take on multiple targets at once.

The deal breaker is price and ease of procurement we can get used ones from Finland, Croatia and the Netherlands with a bit of direct negotiations for less than $500k a unit. New ones you would be talking about $1m or thereabouts dependent on numbers. However we don’t have time to wait for them to be manufactured so I am talking 48 hrs after purchase 150 units airlifted into combat zone.

That would essentially end the entire threat of Boko technical’s literally overnight.

However, for LICW (low intensity conflict) and COIN, vehicles like the IGIRIGI, MRAPs and bushmasters are increasingly been deployed, as the enemy in these sort of conflicts do not posses heavy weaponry.

An MRAP would not save the soldiers in them from RPG or 14.5mm fire. They cannot withstand such pressure. However, generally, insurgents do not always have RPGs or 14.5mm.

All these vehicles have a role they play in a conflict. So for example in mali, the French deployed their VBCI, as well as ERC-90 Sagie, Panhard VBL and VAB.

Henry120,

Are you serious every 2 kobo insurgent has access to RPG-7's and 50cal. NE is awash with these weapons and remain a major threat to our troops, particularly as we still will not invest in basic precision weaponry as standard issue for our troops.

A glass cup can be seen as half full or half empty. I have a problem when a media channel perpetually sees it as half empty. But that is ok for most Nigerians, as in your view nothing good can ever come from Nigeria.

Note that when a people continually complain about their leadership for over 60 years, you have to begin to blame the people. This is because if we are actually good, how come in over how many years we always end up with 'bad' leaders. Like they say a people can only get the leadership they deserve.

SiriusBlack: Ill pardon your ignorance...Domboa is a town..not some bush you can just shell...most of the civilians there have fled..
Still, you can't just shell a town because enemies are there...war is inseperable from politics..don't be naïve...We boast of one of the largest Artillery systems in Africa...It doesn't cost the N.A to shell the town to dust...but imagine the political firestorm if we destroy the livelihoods of people living there...check page 0, I posted a phot of Artillery units shelling fleeing insurgents...you think we can't do that? Military tactics is not always as it looks in movies...

Your post on the patria borders on wish-full thinking and impracticality. Governments don't buy weapons willy nilly like it's a book on a shelf.

"Which countries are the sources of F.G's weapon acquisitions?". Has the nigerian government ever purchased weapons from Scandinavian states? Do we purchase weapons that are easily susceptible to sanctions, and we're left moribound with vehicles we cannot field effectively or get spares for, or The army fielding a vehicle they are un-familiar with in the middle of an insurgency.

Better still, we should have gone for the Tiger, mangusta or the Apache attack helicopter. They are clearly better platforms than the MI-35M.

In the last decade, china, russia, turkey and Israel have been the main sources of F.G's arms procurement. It makes sense to purchase vehicles that troops are familiar with, are battle tested and can easily be deployed, without having to re-train officers on an entirely new platform. Newer BTR's come with automated turrets with FLIR capability, plus their are many chinese IFVs in the market with amazing turrets and armour.

In all, Your post makes for a good bed-time story.

Do you fight in the N.E? What is your basis for this conclusion? B.H field RPG's doesn't mean the region is awash with this weapon type.

N.A top brass, say it is the IGIRIGI, so they field them. It provides adequate protection, good for our arms industry and the economy. It's basic common sense.

The europeans field the IVECO LMV in afghanistan
The french field the panhard VBL in mali
The turks field the otokar cobra in turkey against the PKK
The russians field the GAZ TIGR in dagestan and the north caucusus.
The Israelis field the sandcat and multiple other APVs in their conflicts.

All these vehicles are in the same class as the Igirigi.

Technicals come armed with different weapon systems from light machine guns, mortars, heavy machine guns and anti-aircraft guns.

The vehicle in question can't withstand heavy weapons.

MRAPS offer speed, protection against mines,IEDs,light infantry weapons like assault rifles. Whether from ambushes or contact with the enemy when chasing them in the bushes.

Most African militaries are yet to achieve capabilities to deploy forces in formations such as the French in Mali.

Gen sirusblack and other officers in the house, please i need you to answer this for me.

What is the difference between DSS and Short service, which of them undertake programme in NDA.

Someone that got into NA through DSS, which rank is he likely to get to before retirement.

Thanks.

They are both quite similar but the DSS is mainly for "ready-made" professionals like Medical doctors...The SSC is for graduates...They both train at the NDA...the RC trains at the permanent site at Kawo...the SSC and DSS cadets train at the old site...RC cadets train for 5 years....SSC cadets, about 9 months...but you will have to be VERY good, as an SSC and DSS trained officer, to get into the Infantry and Armoured Corps..
On the second question, You can go wherever God takes you....many peeps ill tell you that the highest SSC and DSS officers can go, is as Major Generals...which means that you will keep the same salary scale even after retirement...But, if you stand out, the sky is the limit....the immediate past Chief of Air staff was SSC trained...the first female Major General too was DSS trained...Lt.Gen Chris Alli who was COAS during the Abacha era was SSC trained...In the army, officers are respected equally based on rank..whatever commission they passed through...Just try and be the best, work hard, lay low, and you might become COAS even with a DSS commission.

Then he/she will follow the normal route..MANY peeps here became officers that way...joined as recruits with degrees, making it easier to get recommendations from Senior Officers for NDA admissions...they then did SSC for a year and are now offcrs...others still less than 21yrs of age just went straight to the RC training.

An observation (2 actaully) from the pic below.

1) it seems the Nigerian Army has adopted a new combat helmet totally different from the usually PASGAT and Chinese copy of the kevlar helmet adopted by the forces.

2) Apparently the Amy has adopted weapons like the PKM and Pecheneg Machine gun obviously "liberated" from captured BH weapons stock.

SiriusBlack: Bro...the topic is quite sensitive...Troops rotation was one of the issues behind the unfortunate mutiny...but ill give you some info....
Before the 7th Division was established, frontline troops were made up of splinters of troops mostly from battalions from the Armoured Division units at Jos, Bauchi with some units from Kaduna and even Ibadan...After the 7th Division was established, it was splintered into several infantry battalions, some armoured battalions and a few SF battalions...troop rotation however varies across various areas...varies for officers and soldiers...Armoured brigades are based almost entirely up north so, thiers is to very regular....in summary, tours of duty are about a year and half for regular soldiers...mostly it just depends on if ure in infantry battalions, artillery brigades or armoured battalions..Recently some guys from Lagos were injected..some artillery guys from akure too...so, in about 2 years from now, every infantry soldier in the N.A will have real cpmbat experience under his belt...every single soldier.

Quite an insight. But the period each soldier spends in theatre is quite long oh. Each composite unit from any of the NPF ' S MOPOL Squadrons spends a maximum of SIX MONTHS at the frontlines in either Borno or Yobe compared to the Army before they're rotated out for another.

No Bravery

There are children standing here,
Arms outstretched into the sky,
Tears drying on their face.
He has been here.
Brothers lie in shallow graves.
Fathers lost without a trace.
A nation blind to their disgrace,
Since he's been here.

And I see no bravery,
No bravery in your eyes anymore.
Only sadness.

Houses burnt beyond repair.
The smell of death is in the air.
A woman weeping in despair says,
He has been here.
Tracer lighting up the sky.
It's another families' turn to die.
A child afraid to even cry out says,
He has been here.

And I see no bravery,
No bravery in your eyes anymore.
Only sadness.

There are children standing here,
Arms outstretched into the sky,
But no one asks the question why,
He has been here.
Old men kneel and accept their fate.
Wives and daughters cut and raped.
A generation drenched in hate.
Yes, he has been here.

And I see no bravery,
No bravery in your eyes anymore.
Only sadness.

If by next month NAF receives the first batch of the attack and transport helos as claim in the report, by October, there should be scarcity of virgins for those to be earthly expelled by December.
