Atletico Madrid midfielder Tiago Mendes
has agreed a two-year contract to return
to Chelsea after rejecting late bids from
Monaco and Zenit St Petersburg.

Tiago is a free agent after his contract
expired at the La Liga champions and is
keen to reunite with manager Jose
Mourinho at Stamford Bridge.

The 33-year-old was one of Mourinho’s
early signings during his first spell in
charge at Chelsea and helped them win
the Premier League in 2005.

But he left for Lyon after just one season
because he feared opportunities in the
team were going to diminish as competition for places increased.

Mourinho wants Tiago’s experience to
help fill the void left by the departure of
veteran Frank Lampard, who is set to
announce he is joining MLS side New York
City.
