Higher Everyday FRIDAY, JULY 22, 2016 DISCONTENTMENT "And every one that was in distress, and every one that was in debt, and every one that was discontented, gathered themselves unto him; and he became a captain over them..." (1 Samuel 22:2) Standing on a street corner, a beggar commented to his friends; "If only I had a hundred dollars, I would never complain again." A businessman walking by overheard his statement and interrupted the conversation. "Excuse me," the man said. "Did you say if you had a hundred dollars, you would never complain again?" The beggar replied, "You heard right, mister." The man pulled out his wallet, handed him a hundred dollars, and said, "I’m glad I can have a small part in bringing happiness to the world." After the man walked away, the beggar turned to his friends and remarked, "I wish I had asked for two hundred dollars!" Are you like this beggar whose last comment is a mark of ingratitude and discontentment? When you become discontented in life, it means you are not satisfied with what you have and aimed at where God is not leading you. If you are such a discontented young person, seek the face of the Lord now. • Challenge: "Avoid discontentment in life" • Prayer: "Help me, O Lord, to always be happy" • Quote: "Seek the face of the Lord now" • Further Reading: 1 Timothy 6:6 See more at: |

Higher Everyday MONDAY, JULY 25, 2016 VAIN COMPARISON "For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise" (2 Corinthians 10:12) Festus came from a poor home. When he got to college, most of his classmates were very rich, because they came from well-to-do families. They had flashy handsets and wrist watches, wore expensive dresses, ate expensive food, and had enough money to throw around. Their lifestyle soon charmed Festus and he chose to behave like them. But, how was he to get all that his classmates had. This pushed him into telling lies so as to squeeze money out of his parents. He would lie that they were asked to buy a bottle of ‘photosynthesis’ which was very expensive. Because they did not want him to fail his exams, whatever Festus asked from his poor parents, they would borrow to satisfy him. His parents became very indebted. Do you know that if you compare yourself with others, you would become either proud or discouraged? Unfortunately, neither pride nor discouragement is from God. Do not lust after the riches of the world. Depend on the Lord always. • Challenge: "God hates the proud and will punish all liars" • Prayer: "Take away any spirit of pride from me, O Lord" • Quote: "Neither pride nor discouragement is from God" • Further Reading: 2 Corinthians 3:1 See more at: |

Higher Everyday TUESDAY, JULY 26, 2016 LET GOD LEAD "The LORD is my shepherd I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters" (Psalm 23:1, 2) Many young people think they can lead themselves. Some even go as far as seeking guidance in worldly powers, that's why they join cultic groups or bad friends. They not only reject parental guidance but also shun the leadership of God. Some of such youth know God's will but keep trying to decide whether or not to do it, and when they listen more to the voice of the devil, they finally decide to do the devil's will, with grave consequences. Why do you choose to wrestle with God, who has the power to lead you into His Will? Don't you know that the powers of this world only help to drive you out of God's will? Do not wander away from the Lord because you are looking for greener pastures elsewhere. Know that the grass is always greenest in the centre of God's will. • Challenge: "Why do you choose to wrestle with God?" • Prayer: "Help me, Lord, to yield to your will" • Quote: "Do not wander away from the Lord" • Further Reading: Isaiah 40:11; Revelation 7:17 See more at: |

Higher Everyday WEDNESDAY JULY 27, 6016 PROPER PLANNING "For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?" (Luke 14:28) Our Lord and Saviour who is Wisdom personified, advises us to plan for whatever we want to do. Planning is simply a schedule of what you want to do, stating out the where, when and how of it. It also includes who and what materials you may need to help achieve your goals. God is the greatest Planner. He created the world in six days with stage by stage work. When he saw the first day's work was good, He then did more things on subsequent days until He perfectly completed His work on the sixth day. People like Noah, Moses and Solomon built with good work plans supported by God. As a student, for example, at the beginning of the school session set your academic goals with the expected scores or grades you want to make in each subject. Plan a personal study time table, giving more time to difficult subjects. Try to keep to your study timetable, allowing no distractions from peers. God will support you as you obey His Word. • Challenge: "To succeed plan your work and work your plan" • Prayer: "Lord, help me to follow through my timetable" • Quote: "Keep to your study timetable" • Further Reading: Proverbs 6:6-8 See more at: |

Higher Everyday Thursday JULY 28, 2016 ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE "And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, and fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan" (Luke 17: 15-16) James Allen said, "No duty is more urgent than that of returning thanks." A good turn will always attract another favour. Our text today pictures the common features in our world. The recipients of healing of leprosy, an incurable contagious and deforming disease, were ten. Only one returned to Jesus for appreciation. Do you always demand without expression of gratitude to the giver? When last did you thank and pray for your parents, teachers and other leaders? Moreover, we need to be grateful to God, the greatest Giver. He gave His only begotten Son to die for our redemption. Be grateful to God for the gift of life, rain, sunshine and food. Be thankful for the big and small gifts. Jesus felt disappointed at the ingratitude of the rest nine lepers. Today your attitude of gratitude to God for the gift of life is to surrender your life to him. Repent of all known sins and consecrate your life to reach others for Jesus Christ. This is the greatest "Thank You" offering to God. • Challenge: "Can you understand God's love for you?" • Prayer: "Lord, forgive my past ingratitude" • Quote: "Be grateful to God" • Further Reading: Psalm 150: 1-6 See more at: |

Higher Everyday FRIDAY JULY 29, 2016 TRYING TIMES "For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength, insomuch that we despaired even of life" (1 Corinthians 1:8.) This world is full of trials and it is not limited to any age, race or gender. When trying times are well handled they bring forth blessings. Oprah Winfrey said; "Challenges are gifts that force us to search for a new centre of gravity. Don't fight them. Just find a new way to stand." The new way to stand is looking unto Jesus. Ungodly youths go the way of rebellion, riots and revenge with violent destruction. Such a response ends in regrets. Although Apostle Paul suffered much, he counselled, "There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it" (1 Corinthians 10:13). No matter how tiring and discouraging trying times may be, there is victory ahead of you. Never withdraw your love and commitment to God. Like the saints of old, persevere to keep your name in the Lamb's Book of life. • Challenge: "Be like the farmer who patiently waits for the fruits" • Prayer: "Lord, give me grace to endure trials" • Quote: "Never withdraw your commitment to God" • Further Reading: 2 Corinthians 11:24-33 See more at: |

Higher Everyday Saturday JULY 30, 2016 BENEFITS OF BENEVOLENCE "And it fell on a day, that Elisha passed to Shunem, where was a great woman; and she constrained him to eat bread..." (2 Kings 4:8.) I love this statement by Oswald J. Smith, "The only way to have more than enough to spare is to give God more than you can spare." Our text today reveals a woman who was caring and charitable to a stranger who she later found to be a prophet of God. She and her husband also provided accommodation for the man of God to rest, eat and sleep whenever he went to Shunem. This caring couple had no child yet they loved to care. Through Prophet Elisha's prophesy, a miracle baby boy was born in the family and their reproach was taken away. Everyone gets excited when people give presents to them especially surprise gifts. As a Christian youth learn to care for others and be concerned about people around you, no matter your personal challenges. Give a helping hand to the weary, the hungry and godly counsel to the fearful. No one ever becomes poor by giving to the needy. God promises great rewards for the cheerful giver. • Challenge: "True riches are in what you sow in others" • Prayer: "Lord, give me a charitable heart" • Quote: "No one ever becomes poor by giving" • Further Reading: 2 Kings 4: 12-17 See more at: |

Higher Everyday SUNDAY JULY 31, 2016 DELAYS DESTROY DESTINY "And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the LORD being merciful unto him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city" (Genesis 19:16) Share this poem by James Albery with me: He slept beneath the moon He basked beneath the sun He lived a life of going to do And died with nothing done. This poem cannot be talking about someone reading this devotional. Delays and procrastination are time wasting bedfellows. Lot, in our text exhibited the worst form of lingering and delays in time of danger. But for the forceful persuasion of the angels, Lot and his family would have perished in Sodom; in fact the wife did. God has great plans for you to excel, so do not force yourself into the class of mediocrity due to delay in doing your work. Moreover, do not postpone your salvation. Do it now else, you miss heaven. • Challenge: "Lingerers always queue behind the diligent" • Prayer: "My God, deliver me from procrastination" • Quote: "Do not postpone your salvation" • Further Reading: 1 Kings 13:7-10, 14, 24 See more at: |

Higher Everyday MONDAY AUGUST 1, 2016 FIGHT FEAR WITH FAITH "What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee" (Psalm 56:3) Fear is common to all when danger approaches. A plastic snake for example can spark fear in a child's heart but a mature mind would not fear it. Someone said, "In the gospels we see Jesus exhorting His children not to be afraid. In the Acts we see them poised and unafraid." Praise God! These 'children' got the Holy Ghost baptism in the Acts and their faith increased, driving fear away. May God also drive your fears away in the name of Jesus. From home to school and beyond, there are situations that may cause you to fear, leading to anxiety and worry. Whenever you are tempted to fear, look unto Jesus, meditate on God's promises, believe that God is managing your affairs; and because He is in-charge, all things will work out fine at last. King David called those things that make young people fear, "the shadow of death." Shadows may look fearful but they can do no harm. Fear exists nowhere but in the heart of the faithless. • Challenge: "Faith frightens fear with God's promises" • Prayer: "Lord, Let me rise in the power of your promises" • Quote: "May God also drive your fears away" • Further Reading: Psalm 56: 11 See more at: |

Higher Everyday TUESDAY AUGUST 2, 2016 FEED YOUR FAITH "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God" (Romans 10:17) You fade into 'old school' when you stop learning but when you keep learning you stay current and relevant, especially in this IT age. Through reading we acquire knowledge, gain inspiration, and are able to recall what is forgotten. As we feed the mind with information and our body with physical food, so we feed the spirit man with God's Word. P. C. Nelson said, "The time will come that you will need faith, either for yourself, or for some member of your family. And if you haven't kept your faith strong, you'll be at a disadvantage." Many church youths today lack the knowledge of God's Word and so are spiritually dry, ignorant and unable to resist temptations. Our text today says that faith comes through God's Word. Timothy was praised for his faith which he got through his godly mother and grandmother. Listen to your Pastor's messages on CD, DVD and your Cell phone. Study the Bible by dividing it into bits and day by day read a portion. Faith will give you stamina to pursue your desires for success in life. • Challenge: "Your knowledge of God determines your level of faith" • Prayer: "Lord, increase my faith" • Quote: "Study the Bible" • Further Reading: Hebrews 11:1-6 See more at: |

Higher Everyday WEDNESDAY August 3, 2016 FLEE FORNICATION "Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body" (1 Corinthians 6:18) The word 'flee' denotes danger, emergency and a command that should be obeyed promptly. Fornication as used in the Bible is inclusive of all immoral acts such as pornography, gay and sexual lust. The baits that draw youths to this sin include advertisement by both electronic and print media. The sin of fornication is destructive. It has direct impact on its victims, causing sexually transmitted diseases like gonorrhoea and HIV/AIDS. Unwanted pregnancies through fornication have turned many girls into school dropouts and single 'baby mothers.' "Well, I am not a kid, I am protected against these things," some youths may argue. But that is if they do not reckon with the moral and spiritual effects; the most fearful end is the judgment of God upon all fornicators. It leads to eternal suffering in hell. Only genuine repentance and forsaking of sin will attract God's mercy and forgiveness. • Challenge: "Fornication is one harm too costly" • Prayer: "Lord, I repent of all forms of immorality" • Quote: "Fornication is destructive" • Further Reading: Proverbs 6: 23-27 See more at: |

Higher Everyday THURSDAY AUGUST 4, 2016 ZEST FOR THE ZENITH "Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before" (Philippians 3:13) In his book, You Can Win, Shiv Khera said, "A burning desire is the starting point of all accomplishment. Just like a small fire cannot give much heat, a weak desire cannot produce great results." There are millions of unexplored areas in science and technology. In every field of research there are new discoveries and inventions. Even in archaeology, fresh findings are proving the exactness of the Holy Bible stories and prophecies. Unfortunately, while there are wide fields for research, many youths want to cheat to get good grades. They want to win without working. In our text today, Apostle Paul did not see any impossibility and insurmountable situation in his path of service to God and humanity. He had a burning zeal to press on for greater victories for God. As a Christian youth, you must aim at excelling in your studies and career for God's glory. Moreover, like many faithful servants of God, strive to give of your best to the Master. • Challenge: "You either spend the day or the day will spend you" • Prayer: "Oh Lord, help me to work on my goals today" • Quote: "Give of your best to the Master" • Further Reading: Philippians 3: 7-15 See more at: |

Higher Everyday FRIDAY AUGUST 5, 2016 CRITICAL TIMES AND COURAGE "And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him…but David encouraged himself in the LORD his God" (1 Samuel 30: 6) Courage is not the absence of fear but the ability to pass over it and triumph. Hear Henry Van Dyke, "Courage is the standing army of the soul which keeps it from conquest, pillage, and slavery." We often remember David only for his victory over Goliath and as the King of Israel. But he started as a shepherd boy in the field with wild lions and bears. He was there in the sun and in the rain. He was never unhappy with the challenge of his trade but studied to master them. He also trained to play on stringed musical instruments and made a name as the sweet psalmist. What are the challenges facing you? Like David you must encourage yourself in the Lord. Call upon God. There is no mountain or trouble that the prayer of the righteous cannot move. As David recovered all that the invaders took away in his absence, so will you achieve your heart desires. But be sure you are born again as you call on God. You will succeed! • Challenge: "Let Christ be in you and you will win all battles" • Prayer: "Lord, I believe I can overcome all my challenges" • Quote: "Call upon God" • Further Reading: I Samuel 30: 3-8 See more at: 1 Like 2 Shares |

Higher Everyday Saturday AUGUST 6, 2016 BLOOD MONEY "And said unto them, What will ye give me, and I will deliver him unto you? And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver" (Matthew 26: 15) The chief priests and Jewish elders wanted to kill Jesus for envy but had feared to take Him in the open because they feared the multitude who loved Him. Many people of all classes had benefited from Jesus' ministry. For this the Jewish leaders were not happy. Jesus spoke the truth always and gave hope to all, teaching about God's kingdom. To be able to get Jesus arrested they needed His close disciple who would lead the way at night to His usual garden of resort. The hatchet man was Judas Iscariot. What a dastardly deed for thirty pieces of silver! Judas Iscariot betrayed his Master for 30 pieces of silver to those who hated His gospel. It was 'blood money.' Today some youths betray one another for cash. Kidnappers and robbers have used some young people to get information about family members. As a Christian you stay away from all such evils. God will ask the blood of betrayed persons from the hands of their betrayers. • Challenge: "Evil pursues the wicked" • Prayer: "Lord, deliver me from covetousness and betrayal" • Quote: "Stay away from evil" • Further Reading: Mark 14: 44 – 49 See more at: |

Higher Everyday SUNDAY AUGUST 7, 2016 INHERENT DANGER OF IGNORANCE "Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart" (Ephesians 4:18) Kathryn Rawlins now 45 had found a potentially live civil war shell (explosive) as a school girl when she was 15 in a playing field. She had used it as a decorative ornament for over 30 years. She only realise that it was an unexploded bomb when she watched a documentary of war bombs. She then informed the police, who confirmed that it was still alive and capable of killing any person at 20 metres radius and able to pull down her house. Can you imagine the mercy of God? Like the story above many people remain ignorant of the danger of sin from childhood to adulthood and sometimes to death. Sin blinds and separates the sinner from the life of God. Do not pretend to be ignorant after you have heard the gospel: "And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men everywhere to repent" (Acts 17:30). Like Kathryn, report yourself to Jesus and He will defuse sin from you. You can be saved today. • Challenge: "Ignorance is not an excuse in Law" • Prayer: "Lord, forgive my sins and let me walk in the light" • Quote: "You can be saved today" • Further Reading: Ephesians 4: 17-24 See more at: |

Higher Everyday MONDAY AUGUST 8, 2016 WALKING THE HARD WAY "The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what they stumble" (Proverbs 4:19) In November 2015, a 19 year old man died of smoke inhalation and burn in Huron, California in USA when he attempted to enter a house through its chimney. Unfortunately for him the owner lit fire and the burglar was trapped. The wicked will always stumble because as he delights in disobedience so evils trail his footpaths. He plans without God and goes to execute without scriptural counsel. The Bible is the torch lamp God has given to light the world. It dispels the way of crime and evils. The Bible says, "Good understanding giveth favour: but the way of transgressors is hard" (Proverbs 13:15). We should avoid the dark and hard ways of the transgressors. Do you spend time with the Lord and His Word daily? Youths in the Word cannot stumble. His path is righteous and the Lord directs it daily. Faith comes and grows by obedience to God's Word. All we can receive from God is by faith through the knowledge from the scriptures. • Challenge: "Evil shortcuts shortcut life" • Prayer: "Lord, guide me on the godly path daily" • Quote: "Youths in the Word cannot stumble" • Further Reading: Proverbs 4: 13-18 See more at: |

Higher Everyday TUESDAY AUGUST 9, 2016 SAINTS LAWFUL STRIVING "And if a man also strive for masteries, yet is he not crowned, except he strive lawfully" (2 Timothy 2:5) The spate of students' failure in core subjects such as English language in examinations is alarming. Some of the major causes are the social media and text messaging. These are two things, youths in particular, do daily. Most of them are almost inseparable from their mobile phones because of chatting, posting and text-messaging. The language word use in these connections is not conventional and has crept into academic discuss and writing. The abbreviations of common words like "d" for "the," "ur" for "your" are now found in the examination scripts of students. Phone addiction also distracts many youths from their studies. Our text challenges us to keep to the rules in our affairs. Every course or subject has its rules, principles and terms, which must be observed for excellent scores. The syllabus must be understood and the guidelines followed. Spiritually too, sin is sin no matter who commits it. There is no acceptable excuse for sin. Strive lawfully for the kingdom of God because there is no shortcut to heaven. • Challenge: "There is just a step between heaven and hell" • Prayer: "Lord, keep me focused on guiding rules in all I do" • Quote: "Strive lawfully for the Kingdom" • Further Reading: 2 Timothy 2:1-7 See more at: |

Higher Everyday Wednesday AUGUST 10, 2016 POWER PURSUIT "The king spake, and said, Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power?" (Daniel 4:30) "Alexander the Great was a great warrior who conquered the world before the age of 30 years. He was sad that there was no land more to conquer. He had control over all the wealth of the world. One of his sick bed wishes before he died at age 33 was that the wealth he had accumulated should be scattered on the road along the procession to the cemetery to let everybody know that material wealth acquired on earth will be left here on earth." Many youth seek after material things without seeking to be closer to God. They admire corrupt and godless people some of whom acquire power and wealth from demons. Power belongs to God and only He can sincerely give us long life to enjoy a little of what we acquire on earth. The abundance of His kingdom is for those who live holy and serve Him now. As you pursue your academics or vocation, remember that the most important thing is to seek first God's Kingdom and His righteousness. • Challenge: "Power without purity is a two edged sword without handle" • Prayer: "Lord, curtail my ungodly pursuits" • Quote: "Power belongs to God" • Further Reading: Ecclesiastics 6: 1-7 See more at: 1 Like 2 Shares |

Higher Everyday THURSDAY AUGUST 11, 2016 DANGEROUS ADVENTURES "For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come" (1 Timothy 4:8.) "I just felt like climbing" said a six year old boy who climbed and got stuck on top of a large tree 50 feet (15m) high in Duplin Country North Carolina. He was however, rescued by fire fighters who were invited by his parents. Like this little boy many youths dare things and soon find themselves stuck in great danger. Youngsters often compete in risky games and adventures just to prove a point. Much as exercise is good for health it must not be allowed to endanger life. The effects of pornography, war films and action times have taken their toll on many youths. They want to practise everything in pictures and print. Do you know that some of those actions are 'photo tricks' beyond the possible human actions? Christian youth must be selective in exercising. Do only things that build up and not those that hinder spiritual growth and maturity. One step into sin if not quickly withdrawn leads to damnation. Avoid whatever saps your physical, mental or spiritual energy. • Challenge: "Exercise with caution" • Prayer: "Help me to watch against excesses, O God!" • Quote: "Do only things that build up" • Further Reading: Matthew 4:3-7 See more at: |

Higher Everyday FRIDAY AUGUST 12, 2016 RECHABITES' RESOLUTION "But they said, We will drink no wine: for Jonadab the son of Rechab our father commanded us, saying, Ye shall drink no wine, neither ye, nor your sons forever" (Jeremiah 35: 6) Charlie Coulson, the Christian drummer boy was a youth helping during the civil war in Gellysburg. He was wounded and needed to undergo a surgery. The only sedative was alcohol which his mother had taught him never to drink. Alcohol was a common evil among the ungodly youth of his day. He endured the pains of the surgery without the alcoholic sedative. Charlie's action so endeared him to the surgeon that he became born again. Our text tells the story of the sons of Jonadab who commanded them never to drink wine. They were resolute to obey their father even when compelled to drink wine by a prophet. They were later promoted by God among the Israelites. Several youths flout their parents' godly counsels and despise God's commandments. They take delight in drug addiction, smoking and other evils. If the Rechabites kept the instructions of their father, God is asking sinful youths today "…if I then be a father where is mine honour" (Malachi 1:6)? Obedience to God's word is the mark that you fear and reverence Him. • Challenge: "No reason can make poison good for food" • Prayer: "Give me grace to keep the land marks of holiness!" • Quote: "Soberness conceals what drunkenness reveals" • Further Reading: Jeremiah 35: 13 – 19 See more at: |

Higher Everyday SATURDAY AUGUST 13, 2016 WATCH AGAINST WAYWARDNESS "As a jewel of gold in a swine's snout, so is a fair woman which is without discretion" (Proverbs 11:22) The visible attitude of a youth is a reflection of his/her inward convictions and thoughts. A carefree and wayward lifestyle obviously shows that his/her heart is ruled by an ungodly spirit. The common scene of nudity and waywardness among youths are results of the depraved and reprobate minds. Such minds are not yielded to the Spirit of God as they do things which repel Him. Such a life advertises immorality, cultism, drug addiction, fraud, rioting, kidnapping and robbery. They showcase their beauty by partial nudity or transparent attires. The devil is behind waywardness and has bound many youths for hell fire. He knows he has a short time before God's judgment comes upon the earth. The call to you is, "Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord" (2 Corinthians 6:17). Repeated warnings from our Lord and Master Jesus is "watch and pray" because He is coming suddenly as a thief when you least expect Him. • Challenge: "Wayward youth come to Jesus" • Prayer: "Lord, I come to you in repentance. Please pardon my past" • Quote: "The Devil is behind waywardness" • Further Reading: Zephaniah 1: 4-8 See more at: |

Higher Everyday SUNDAY AUGUST 14, 2016 SELF APPRAISAL "Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?" (1 Corinthians 13:5) Little Tom who got regular pay for cutting the lawn of an elderly woman decided one day to prove whether he was satisfying his employer. He went to a shop to phone the elderly woman, requesting to come and take care of her lawn. The woman replied that she already had an expert handling the job. He insisted that he would do it free for her to show that he was better at such jobs, but the woman reaffirmed that she was very satisfied with her present service provider and had no need to try another. Tom smiled at the other end having proved that his job was satisfactory. That was a self-appraisal by Tom. A good student does self-assessment by attempting questions on every topic he reads. Find out too what your teachers, parents or guardians think about your work. These are ways of assessing your service worth. Getting feedback from people on whatever you do can help you rise to excellence. Using similar methods, you can also evaluate your Christian life. • Challenge: "Criticisms stimulate the progress of the wise" • Prayer: "Lord, give me wisdom to assess my work" • Quote: "Evaluate your Christian life" • Further Reading: Genesis 1: 4,10,12, 18, 21, 25, 31 See more at: |

Higher Everyday MONDAY AUGUST 15, 2016 YOUR MEASURE OF GRACE "For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith?" (Romans 12:3) Grace is the unmerited favour God has bestowed upon sinful mankind by Jesus Christ. Such grace can be observed in the blessings and talents He has distributed to everyone. Every person has one or more gifts where he excels above others. No one has the right to boast of whatever he has because it is given by God. Desire without the help of God cannot yield results. God's gifts and grace in us are to be used to support others. The grace of God enables us to resist evil and remain focused on holy living. Many saved youths have excelled through the grace of God. They preach the gospel with boldness, resist opposition through effective prayer life and also make a mark in the world in education and career. By the grace of God you can reach excellence in your endeavours. There is a present measure of grace of God in you. The way you faithfully use it will determine how much will be added (1 Peter 5: 5). • Challenge: "God's grace cannot be bought" • Prayer: "I submit all my talents for your use, oh God" • Quote: "Grace, the unmerited favour" • Further Reading: Romans 12:4-8 See more at: |

Higher Everyday TUESDAY AUGUST 16, 2016 FLEE IDOLATRY "Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry" (1 Corinthians 10:14) Idolatry is the act of worshiping Idols. It also includes undue admiration for things created by God to the extent that they are accorded more value than God. Whatever takes the place of God in your heart is regarded as an Idol. It may be a game, profession, ornament, fellow human being, which robs you of giving the Almighty God His sovereign position. The practices of many artists and musicians have made them idols before their fans. Incantations which revere idols are popularised by them which many youths have imbibed ignorantly. Idolatrous jewels are displayed and worn by celebrities. Others wear symbols of cults and demonic clubs of diverse sizes and shapes which link them to satanic spiritual world. The Christian youth is called upon to flee from idolaters and their abominable practices. God's wrath is against all idolaters. Modern idol worshippers may design and decorate their shrines to look attractive. Avoid them like plague and touch no unclean thing. The custom that encourages idolatry should not be practised. • Challenge: "Worship only the Almighty God" • Prayer: "Today, I dissociate myself from every link to idols" • Quote: "Touch no unclean thing" • Further Reading: Exodus 20:1-5 See more at: |

Higher Everyday WEDNESDAY AUGUST 17, 2016 SACRIFICING FOR SAINTS "Who have for my life laid down their own necks: unto whom not only I give thanks, but also all the churches of the Gentiles" (Romans 16:4) During 1988 Seoul Olympic games, Lawrence Lemieux stopped racing in a yacht race to help a fellow competitor who was in trouble. The whole world was watching. His priority of the safety of other people's lives was greater than his desire to win. Even though he did not win the race, he was a winner as he was awarded the rarest medal Pierre de Coubertin of them all. Kings and queens honoured him all over the world. The axiom "paddle your own canoe" is abhorrent to Christian calling. We exist not for ourselves alone but also for the good of others especially in the household of faith. We must be ready to give up some things and go through some pains if necessary, for the benefits of fellow believers. Yes, we must be ready to let go our money, time, and materials for other saints to make life more meaningful and comfortable for them. Jesus sacrificed His life for us. We are to follow His example. Whatever is done for the brethren is done for the Lord. • Challenge: "Impact positively the lives of people" • Prayer: "Dear Lord, help me to add value to the lives of others" • Quote: "Follow His Example" • Further Reading: 1 John 3: 16-18 See more at: |

Higher Everyday THURSDAY AUGUST 18, 2016 TAKE WHAT HE TEACHES "Teach me thy way, O LORD; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name" (Psalm 86:11) When students come before their teachers, they normally take whatever concept the teacher is passing across and they absorb everything hook-line and sinker. Students believe the teacher is passing the right kind of knowledge to them. Jesus is the greatest Teacher that ever lived. He has all authority to teach us the word of life. He is the teacher that came from God. We must always prepare our minds to receive whatever the Holy Ghost teaches us either through anointed servants of God or through our personal study of the Word of God. Since the Word of God is divine, there are mysteries which we may not understand as human beings. Therefore, when we come across passages "in which are some things hard to be understood," our attitude must be that of trusting children, who believe implicitly whatever their loving father tells them. When we do not comprehend any scriptural passage, we accept the word because it is the word of God. We do not argue the Bible's veracity. We believe the Word and are controlled by the Word. • Challenge: "Man is not to pick and choose from the Bible" • Prayer: "Heavenly Father, help me to study and live by your Word" • Quote: "Believe the Word" • Further Reading: Psalm 119: 4-11 See more at: |

Higher Everyday FRIDAY AUGUST 19, 2016 COMPARING THE INCOMPARABLE "For who in the heaven can be compared unto the LORD? who among the sons of the mighty can be likened unto the LORD?" (Psalm 89:6) What can you compare God with? Nothing! Who is like unto our God? No one! There is no one like Him in being or works. The Bible declares, "Who is like unto thee, O LORD, among the gods? who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders" (Exodus 15:11)? It will be foolhardy to compare God with anything or anybody. God is without equal. God is omnipotent (He is all-powerful). God is omnipresent (He is everywhere). God is omniscient (He knows the past, present and the future, including our thoughts at any given moment). God is infinite. We are part of God's creation. Who can gaze upon a model of human anatomy without wonder and awe? The intricacy of the human frame leaves us in wonder. Through telescope people can see stupendous realities in the sky. The vastness of the universe is unimaginable containing billions of galaxies. The Creator is incomparable. • Challenge: "Never compare God with anything or anybody" • Prayer: "My Creator, help me to appreciate how wonderful you are" • Quote: "God is infinite" • Further Reading: Psalm 19:1-6 See more at: 1 Like 2 Shares |

Higher Everyday Saturday AUGUST 20, 2016 CORRECTING WITH CANE "Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die" (Proverbs 23:13) J. Edgar Hoover wrote, "If discipline is practised in every home, juvenile delinquency would be reduced by 95%." The old saying, "spare the rod and spoil the child" is sacrosanct and as relevant today as ever. Governments, civilisation and psychology may outlaw correcting with stripe; human philosophy may go contrary to God's holy writ; but the Bible is inerrant and cannot be faulted. The foolishness in children will not go by mild rebuke. "Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him." Over-indulgence breeds rebellion. A rod of correction in love is for the child's good and proper upbringing. A child left to himself will eventually end up in ruin and shame. We must not refuse to accept correction or manifest wrong attitude in the process of administration of cane by our parents. God expects us to repent, apologise and make necessary restitutions and continue in godliness. • Challenge: "A child left to himself brings his parents to shame" • Prayer: "Loving Father, I thank you for the correction of my parents" • Quote: "Accept correction" • Further Reading: Proverbs 15:10; 12:1; 13:1 See more at: |

Higher Everyday SUNDAY AUGUST 21, 2016 COURTEOUS CONDUCT "To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men. For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another" (Titus 3:2, 3) A young man got his start in life through being courteous. He was an assistant doorkeeper in the capitol at Washington. His work was to direct people where they wanted to go in that great building. He overheard a stranger ask one of the other doorkeepers for help in finding a senator from California. The doorkeeper answered in a very discourteous way. The assistant who overheard the conversation, said: "If you are from California, you have come a long way; I will try to help you." He soon brought him to the stranger. He asked the doorkeeper to call at his hotel that evening. The stranger was Collis Huntington, a great railroad official in those days. The doorkeeper was offered a position at nearly twice the salary he was then receiving. He was rapidly promoted from that time on. Abigail, by courtesy averted the calamity that would have befallen her and her household when her husband answered David roughly. Civility costs nothing. Be courteous. • Challenge: "Courtesy is a path to success" • Prayer: "O God, help me to cultivate the virtue of courtesy" • Quote: "Civility costs nothing" • Further Reading: 1 Samuel 25:23-27 See more at: |

Higher Everyday MONDAY AUGUST 22, 2016 GIVE THANKS TO GOD "It is a good thing to give thanks unto the LORD, and to sing praises unto thy name, O most High" (Psalm 92:1) The Old Testament is replete with different kinds of sacrifices. The sacrifice of Jesus on the cross put an end to all sacrifices and offering of animals. The only sacrifice required from New Testament saints is sacrifice of praise. "By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name" (Hebrews 13:15). Ingratitude has always been regarded as one of the worst forms of misdemeanour. An adage says, 'To be ungrateful is tantamount to robbery.' The Bible instructs us not to forget God's benefits. Count your blessings and thanksgiving will naturally ooze out of your heart. Thanksgiving must be constant, connected with mercies of redemption, God's favours received, and blessings of healing, promotion, protection and daily benefits. We give thanks to God by singing His praise that others might praise Him too. Praise is one of the greatest duties of the children of God here on earth and will be their employment in heaven forever. • Challenge: "Be thankful for what you have; you will end up having more" • Prayer: "Gracious Father, help me to praise you in every situation" • Quote: "Give thanks to God" • Further Reading: 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 See more at: |

Higher Everyday TUESDAY AUGUST 23, 2016 HAPPY LIFE HABITS "Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice… Be careful for nothing but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God" (Philippians 4:4, 6) "Man wishes to be happy even when he lives so as to make happiness impossible," said St, Augustine. A habit is an acquired mode of behaviour that has become nearly or completely involuntary. Positive actions produce positive or happy life habits. Choose to be always thankful, dutiful, kind and forgiving at home and school rather than complaining. Don't grumble because you have to go to school, but be eager to acquire knowledge. Don't whine because you have to do house chores but shout for joy because God has given you a role to play in the family for positive impact. Don't lament over what your parents didn't give you but be grateful that they gave birth to you. Don't feel sad because your money is little but be glad that you can trust God for more and plan wisely with what is available. Under God's guidance you can develop happy life habits. • Challenge: "You can be happy with Christ in you" • Prayer: "My God, I am glad for your mercies I enjoy" • Quote: "Don't feel sad" • Further Reading: 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 See more at: |

Higher Everyday WEDNESDAY AUGUST 24 HEADING FOR HEAVEN "And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also" (John 14:3) A trailer has no engine. It was never designed to be a self-powered vehicle. Trailers can only move if attached to an automobile. The trailer won't get far away if we try to pull it. For the Christian, the only condition for reaching our destination (heaven) is to be attached to the Lord Jesus Christ and keep abiding in Him. The journey ceases immediately we are detached from Christ. Do not leave this all important matter of heaven to chance. Only a fool will say until we get there. You must be sure of your eternal destiny before you depart this world. If you are not sure of heaven, hell is certain. Make heaven your eternal destination; make necessary and adequate preparations today. You must repent of all your sins, have your heart purged and purified and live daily in holiness. No one will get to heaven by mistake. Heaven is prepared for those who are prepared for it. Where are you heading to - Heaven or hell? • Challenge: "Always be holy if you want to get to heaven" • Prayer: "Dear Lord, help me never to stray from Thee" • Quote: "Keep abiding in Him" • Further Reading: Hebrews 11:14-16 See more at: |
