Primary school teachers in Kogi State yesterday embarked on an indefinite strike over the non-payment of their two months’ salary arrears by the state government. School pupils, who were enthusiastic about their resumption after several months of staying at home, were yesterday sent back home again. In a communiqué signed by the state Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Sulaiman Abdulahi and the union’s Secretary, John Agber, the union said the strike will continue until outstanding salaries of teachers are paid. newtelegraphonline.com/teachers-drop-chalk-kogi/ |

By BOLUWAJI OBAHOPO A Non-Governmental Organisation, The Great Transformation Support Initiative (GTSI), has petitioned the Presidency, to intervene in the plight of primary school teachers in Kogi State. In a petition signed by Ambassador Ojie Mark Ojie, its National Chairman, said the closure of primary schools in the state is affecting the future of over 1.3 million pupils and their teachers. The petition which followed a complain made by Zacch Jonathan, the State Coordinator of GTSI, on the plight of Kogi Primary school teachers over five months unpaid salaries, lamented the five months closure of primary schools in the state. The petition notes that primary schools were closed for six months in 2011, five months in 2012, almost the whole year in 2013 and now closed again with primary school teachers vowing not to resume this year until their demands are met. The GTSI petition to the presidency, which was also copied the National and State Chairmen of the PDP, as well as the Kogi State governor, recommended that aggrieved parties and SUBEB be reconciled as the incessant strike is affecting the standard of primary education in the state. www.vanguardngr.com/2014/05/ngo-petitions-presidency-plight-kogi-teachers/ |
