President Goodluck Jonathan has asked the House of Representatives to grant approval to his government to borrow an external loan of $1bn(about N165bn).

The President’s letter, seeking the lawmakers’ approval to borrow the money, was read during the House’s plenary in Abuja on Wednesday.

Jonathan said the money would be used to upgrade the equipment of the Armed Forces.

Is this amount of money justifiable for it to be used on BH crises at the detriment of critical infrastructures begging for upgrade? The 2015 election is fast approaching anyway and money must go round.

Let's forget about politics and criticise objectively

It's well known that the reason why this war has lingered on for some years it's because our forces are ill equipped. If you guys go to siriusblacks thread, you'll see that he's been literally crying about lack of military equipments that will make it easy for our boys to beat off ambushes.

Military equipments for petes sake are expensive to buy and maintain. Sincerely speaking $1 bn is small but it's still ok.

Someone mentioned about having 1trn defence budget. My brother this money also includes salaries and allowances of over 100000 men in the army navy and airforce. Not forgeting the civilians working in defence ministry. The amount for acquisition of military equipments is not much.

All over Africa there seems to be arms race going on now. Ugganda, Angola ,Chad,Algeria, Kenya,,etc are acquiring 4th generation military equipments. We've been left far behind and the evidence is there for all to see (boko haram is wiping our butts).

Truth is we need to fund our military more now than ever before

Well said, but don't forget we're not partaking in World War III for crying out loud. We're all aware of the embarrassment caused by a GOC in Maiduguri not long ago when he diverted the fund meant for the troop to his personal use, so what is the assurance that same will not happen again and still go to private pockets.

Few years ago Algeria was almost overrun by insurgents (it's being rumored that AQIM trained boko haram terrorists) over 200000 people were massacred in over a decade war. But Algeria had to deport foreign journalists, rejected foreign help and increased defence spending so as to buy 4th gen military equipments. Today activities of the insurgents has been reduced to its barest minimum in Algeria and Algeria arguably has the best military in Africa. Algeria is the 1st African nation to budget over $10 bn for defence .

Yes certainly the funds maybe embezzled, but it shouldn't stop the FG from increasing military funding and maybe see how it can stop the corruption in the military (sounds impossible tongue).

Boko Haram are terrorists and should be crushed by any means possible
