Every year, the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P) will team up with the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) in its Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) element to train 2 million youths.

The Chairman of SURE-P, General Martin Luther Agwai (Rtd.) stated this at the commissioning of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity Skills Acquisition Centre, Bauchi and the Industrial Training Fund Centre of Excellence, Jos.

According to a statement in Abuja, the ability of Government to continue to provide adequate and appropriate training for the nation’s teeming youths rely critically on the establishment of some form of sustainability.

Mr. Agwai who was represented by the Project Technical Adviser on TVET, Mr. Olukayode Soremekun said that additional skills training effort is planned to impact more than 5000 beneficiaries who have indicated interest on SURE-P portal.

He added that SURE-P would soon graduate over 5,000 Nigerians who are currently undergoing client-based training in different entities under the SURE-P TVET.

The Chairman also disclosed that in line with the mandate of the Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) component of the SURE-P which is to reduce unemployment and poverty in Nigeria through skills acquisition and technical/vocational training infrastructure, eight skills acquisition centres have been rehabilitated across the country.

Commissioning the Training Centres, the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu urged the youths to take advantage of the centres.

“This is better than taking to insurgency and other activities which are inimical to the growth of the region. This is a programme of the President that is aimed at repositioning the youths to be responsible tomorrow,” the Minister said.

Nwogu said that over 5,000 youths are currently benefiting from the TVET sponsored training programmes in various vocations such as; ICT, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering for the Power Sector, Building and Construction and Automotive trades among others.

He assured the Bauchi Community that additional vocational skills in the areas of Plaster of Paris (POP), Tricycle and GSM repairs would be added to the existing trades run by the Ministry of Labour and Productivity skills acquisition centre Bauchi.

“By the end of August a total of 1,000 youths who would have completed ICT-Based enterprise training will be empowered with a laptop each, and those who were skilled in auto technician will be empowered with diagnostic machines, multi-meter equipment with cost of training paid for including stipends to each beneficiary. (this forms part of the over 5000 trainees currently benefiting from the TVET training programme,” Wogu said.

Responding on behalf of the Bauchi State Community, the Emir of Bauchi who was represented by the Madakin Bauchi, Alhaji Baba Gidado commended the Federal Government for its efforts in ensuring that the skill acquisition centres across the federation were rehabilitated to create opportunities for skill development for the teeming unemployed youths.

At the commissioning of the Industrial Training Fund Centre of Excellence, Jos, the Director General of the ITF, represented by Mr. Joseph Ari, affirmed that the rehabilitation and re-tooling of skills acquisition centres across the federation was a demonstration of the desire of the Federal Government to industrialize the nation’s economy through technical vocational education training.

She therefore emphasized the need for the ITF’s collaboration with the SURE-P to be sustained especially towards actualizing the 4-Point Agenda of the Fund which includes the Training of 2 million youths annually among others.

“Only collaborations such as the one we are witnessing today will enable us make meaningful progress. It is in this regard that we applaud the efforts of SURE-P for identifying with us in our collective quest to provide, promote, and encourage the acquisition of skills among the vast pool of Nigerians. We would like to urge for the sustenance of this relationship with SURE-P, especially in the area of Training our teeming youths,” the Director General stated.
