WATERMELON =citrulus LANATUS *1.LAND PREPARATIONS
|A|.Clear your selected area of land withcutlas and set fire when dried so that the field look neat and gain more fertility. |B|. Make heaps/ridges and plant on the same day..[planting on the same day give it a better chance of germinating more successfully. |C|.You can still use the insecticide mentioned below to kill any bacteria/fungi or termite that made be there already to break open your watermelon seed..use a sprinkler for that.. |D|.SPACING: plant 2ft by 2ft and 5ft apart {i.e the ridges should be 5ft far from each others and on the same ridge plant 2ft away from each others at 2 or three seed per hole. |E|. THINNING: [i.e is removing of over germinated to replace ungerminatedones]...Should be after 10days of planting or when you are sure of successful germination. *2.SEED
PREPARATIONS Watermelon seeds are sometimes stubborn that some germinate almost after 12-16days of planting and also many decay if not taken care of. To avoid ungermination of the seeds,dry in the sun for 4 good days after extracting from the fruit so that you will clearly separate the matured seeds from unmatured ones. Then plant not more than 1.5cm deep, then use your hands to cover it with earth particles or better still buy a small nylon /small water proof ,then mix manure [possibly poultry waste]with portion of sand then package into the waterproof and plant 2 to 3 seeds inside,1.5cm deep.. ¤note¤>it should be close to your aspiring farming site for easy transplanting] . Then transplant after 10 days of planting by carefully piecesing the water proof. Remember,it does not germinate well in a wet environment, so the mixture should not be too wet to avoid decaying of the seeds Make sure you planted it in an open places i.e
without trees everywhere and plant 2 by 2ft apart.. *3. THE RIGHT TIME TO
APPLY MANURE though you may see that the field is very fertile,but that doesn't prevent you from applying inorganic manure..apply after 11 to 12 days of planting or 3 days after transplanting.. Npk fertilizer 15-15-15 is the best then still apply nitrate fertilizer like UREA 35 day after planting to boost the yield..don't forget to apply in ring method,i.e apply by drilling round the plant at 4 cm away.. *4. BEST INSECTICIDE FOR YOUR MELON Watermelon has bunch of enemies that attack in thousands. Without insecticides,all you are doing is in vain,try LARAFORCE,CYBERFORCE,cYPEFORCE they are very good for protection of your melon,but make sure you follow the instruction given by the producers. Never you wait till the insect started attacking...more clear explanations ahead.. *5. TO SWEETENED YOUR WATERMELON:
One can now make choice on how he or she want his or her melon to be..this is by the use of either salt or sugar. But the riped watermelon into your desired piece ,take a teaspoon of salt or sugar,apply on the watermelon,allow for 5 minutes and you got your desired test of Watermelon. *6.POLLINATION/FRUIT BEARING. After 30-35 days,your melon will begin to bring out male flowers. It appears almost on every node,then female flowers follow. You will begin to see either WILD OR HONEY BEES coming to perch on your watermelon flowers..do not kill them with insecticides or anything. they are not enemies but friends. HARVESTING OF YOUR WATERMELON : When the tendril closest to the melon on the time begins to shrivel and dry up. If it dries while the leaves and rest of the vines looks good,the melon should be riped OR when a small crack appears in the stem just above the melon indicating that the melon is ripe. While harvesting,make sure that the melon is cut from the vine instead of pulled to avoid cracking. Don't harvest until full riped because they will get softer after they are picked from the vine. Spray again after 10 days and weed when necessary. SPRAY again for the 3rd time on or before 37th day then apply the second

Time of planting In southern Nigeria
We have three planting seasons: Early planting is in March, Mid season planting and the most lucrative but risky is June 25 to July 15. Late season planting is August 15 to September 15 in Kwara Oyo and northern parts of Ogun state. Planting in south Ogun, that is Ilaro, Ifo, Ota, Idiropo to Badagry in Lagos is September 15 to October 15. This is
because late rains last till December in these areas.
In the Northern Parts; early season planting is in May and late season planting is July. But with functional irrigation in the north, they are able to plant throughout the year .Lake chad basin in Bornu, Hadeja river basin in Kano are the major irrigation projects turning out watermelon all year round in Nigeria. I am aware that when the price goes so high watermelon is imported into Nigeria from Niger, Chad, Benin and Togo republics.
