As long as he has not been confirmed, he can leave immediately or maximum of 2 weeks notice. But there are some questions he should answer: did he sign any HR policy form during resumption? Was there any thing on resignation and the maximum notice period? Better still, he should ask the senior people in his office.

I once worked as a recruitment consultant.

He must have signed a contract that clearly stipulated his notice period if he wishes resign during the pre-confirmation months/probationary periods.

Please clearly check this and act fast. Might be a day or two.
