Yes. The scores from these tests are needed to process your application into those universities.

Hello house,

A hearty thanks to everyone contributing to the success of this thread.

I'd like your opinion on this matter:

I'm applying for PhD Physics in the US for fall 2018. I've written the GRE (scored between 310 - 320) and the Physics GRE as well (result is pending).

My worry is that I don't have a Masters and my B. Sc degree was attained years ago. I'm thinking of applying to LSU, UC Riverside and U Florida. Should I look elsewhere? Which other schools should I consider if so? And what else do I need to do?

Sometimes I wonder what people really think is going on here.

You are hiding everything about your profile but asking people to pull Hares out of hats for you by recommending schools that would match the very same hidden profile. It does not work that way.

Telling us a range of your GRE score is actually insulting. It was better you did not post it at all.

Nobody is mandated to help you here. If you need that help, perhaps you should respect them enough to give them enough information that can help them to help you. For e.g, even if you scored say 320, if your GPA is less than 3.0/4.0 it would still affect my recommendation of school choices for you. Same goes for if you had 310 and 3.9/4.0.

Admission decisions are holistically arrived at. This is being said for the umpteenth time.

Anyways, go and codedly seek your solutions on physicsforum.com, physicsgre.com, gradschoolshopper.com

I'm surprised at your reply. Didn't anticipate this hostility. I've always pictured you as some gentleman. I do check this thread from time to time but I'm not a regular contributor- that's how I got to know you and others do contribute a lot.

Also, I'm not trying to hide anything, just thought giving an estimate of my score would be enough. Obviously, I was wrong.

Here's my profile:

Undergrad: 3.83/5.0 - 3.34 on a 4.0 scale (WES)
GRE: V-154, Q-160

**I'm thinking of rewriting the GRE, I had malaria on the test day.

If there's anything I omitted, please let me know.

P.S: You could've replied my earlier post in a much different manner but it's all good. I understand how you feel.

Don't worry bro, the message was me informing other posters vicariously through my post to you.

Understand that Physics is quite competitive in the US because it is well-funded. Possessing an MS degree does help but it is not sweeping. Another thing is writing the PGRE. I just discovered that whilst doing my research for your question.

So see this run down of schools; I would give my recommendations right after.

Brandeis, Tufts, Utah state, Montana State, Buffalo**, NCSU, College of William and Mary, UTK **, Pittsburgh, North Texas, Arkansas, Chapel Hill, LSU, UConn, UF, New Hampshire**, North Eastern, Stony Brook**, NYU.

UConn, UF, LSU, Chapel Hill, North Eastern had no M.S but had high GPAs like > 3.8/4.0.

** matched your profile i.e GPA, GRE and International student but they all wrote PGRE (even when some scores were 50-60th percentile) and got fully-funded for PhD.

So maybe you should consider writing that PGRE instead of retaking the GRE General test. Except you have money for the 2 of them.

Riverside can work if you have faculty matching your interests. I have seen profiles much higher than yours get rejected for that very reason. But the General subject test/PGRE is important. All profiles had it even the ones less than yours that got in fully-funded for PhD.

Florida is dicey. You may want to look at USF as well.

Year of graduation does not matter as much as the things listed above. The PGRE definitely covers for your main GRE so take it seriously.

All the best.

Thanks a lot for the reply. I've been researching on this issue for months and I'm fully aware of the importance of the PGRE. I'm only here for more opinions on the issue.

In response to your suggestion, I've actually written the PGRE (mentioned this in my first post tongue cheesy) I'm just waiting for the result. Thought my GRE could be better and that that would help me potentially, hence my decision to rewrite it.

UC Riverside actually mailed me and urged me to apply. That's one of the reasons I'm applying there. They have research options in biophysics, which is my area of interest (haemodynamics and bioengineering). I've been having doubts about Florida. Now I've made up my mind about them.

I'll have a look at the institutions you suggested.

Now considering LSU and UC Riverside, with 2 other safe options.

Merci bien.

In Nigeria or over there?

One could get lucky with the nature of their questions (if the first 2 Qs in my first GRE counted as my graded tests I am sure I would have clocked that score above). However, some are just incredibly skilled at Mathematics such that no matter the level of difficulty, they would get the answers in record time. I sometimes watch the Cowbellpedia and I see these Junior Secondary School students pulverize word problems in seconds. With that type of background, many of them will get near perfect GRE quant scores - I have no doubts.

The senior secondary category is even slightly above the nature of GRE questions (devoid of the traps ofcourse). I get tempted to write down their names to Google it few years forward in a bid to see what they would have done with such skillery in mathematics. I might still do it.

There is one silent viewer on this thread who got a cool 170 in his Quants in August. The guy is such a genius that he is going to retake the tests just so he could up his verbal reasoning scores. This particular guy will easily replicate > 165 again in his Quants. He is that good.

@ the bolded, 169Q in Naija and another chic with 170Q here. I'm thinking of writing the test again sef just for the purpose of getting a gangster score lol.

So i registered for the GRE exam with an agent about 6months ago and i am currently in a university in the US but i just received an email from the ETS saying my score has been cancelled. i don't understand why they chose 6 months after the exam to cancel it or why, and i don't know how it will affect my studies please has any one had similar experience?

Yea, look at Buffalo keenly. Many profiles almost exactly like yours got in.

I am considering same but it boils down to if one is chasing top 15 schools for a PhD bearing in mind that even getting that guarantees one nothing.

But the temptation still persists grin

Precisely. Register with PayPal. The exams would cost you N75k+ for both GRE and TOEFL. Or You can use trusted agents like BY MAFIT and pay N50k for GRE/ N45k for TOEFL. The choice is yours. You can also check ponpon's posts as he has better rates than the previous company I mentioned.

Write another one over there. Pay yourself and resubmit it to your school.

Apparently, your agent used a dud creditcard to pay and ETS on recognizing it, cancelled the result (which they have powers to) or did you use a mercenary to write the test? Don't be offended by my question.
