Guys, please I want to ask,pls what is the latest price for GRE presently in naira? And secondly,is it a must to get a WES evaluation of my transcript? cant i just upload my original transcript without evaluating anything?

The price of GRE is $200 convert it with the current exchange rate. But you can check BY Mafit they do it at #45000 including study materials, magoosh account and free lectures if you based in Lagos or Abuja. Or you can contact Ponpon here he also have a cheaper price with incentives too.

WES evaluation is usually not a must. you only do it if its going to give you an advantage (increase your cgpa) or your school require that. but check with the department if it is compulsory. unless don't waste your money.
All d best

pls,i also want to ask,is it a must for the LOR's to come from professors? the H.O.D of my electrical/electronics department is a Phd Holder,do they disregard LOR from Phd Holders, must it be from a prof?
Re: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by smallsuper: 2:18pm On Jan 10, 2018
Your recommender should not necessarily be a professor, any Phd holder is good to go. As said by one of the bosses on this thread, "since they might not know them then, you should go for quality and not title".

Dalmakz, in addition to Oluwaseun67's advice, use notefull videos on youtube for the speaking section.

On the very first page of this thread, there are two (2) selfstudy email addresses for GRE materials. Follow the instructions by sending a blank email to the addresses. one of the selfstudy emails contains TOEFL materials.

Marilyn24,
There's a wealth of information available on this thread which will help you easily ace the test. If you search through the archives, you will see detailed tips to glean from many people who took the test before you. Those experiences will be of immense help to you.
To know where to start, I will suggest that you download the Powerprep II app from ETS and take the test to have an idea of your strengths and weaknesses. You can download the ETS GRE guides for verbal and Quant too to have an idea of the pattern of questions. I think there's a diagnostic test available in Princeton's 1014 review and Manhattan 5lb too (These are two very good materials too in my opinion).
A lot of people aced the test without tutorial centres, however, it's best to do what works for you.

Little tip: Being proactive as a grad school applicant will definitely come in handy.

All the best with your test and applications.

Hello marilyn 24,you need to download relevant materials and take practice tests at intervals when u begin studying,go to ets website- www.ets.org to download the fundamental materials of GRE,then personally i will advise u to download pdfs of Manhattan`s 8 set Gre Books(very good for quant section, close to perfect, but not so good for verbal),magoosh free GRE ebooks(3 in number),another magoosh full Gre Book(but this is paid) but u know what, the best preparation is to have a magoosh premium account(register with B y mafit) and for more info, type magoosh or GRE on google

https://www.quora.com/What-does-the-admissions-committee-process-for-graduate-school-look-like-Do-you-sit-in-a-room-and-all-discuss-the-same-candidate-at-the-same-time-or-is-it-more-of-an-individual-process-with-opinions-aggregated-at-the-end/answer/James-Leland-Harp

A2A. First this question is about graduate schools that have departments, not about business school, law school or medical schools. These professional programs do consider standardized test scores such as GMAT, GRE, LSAT, or MCAT. However, standardized test scores alone will not get you admitted to any graduate program.

I can only answer this question based on my experiences as a professor who served on a number of admission committees and as a director of a graduate program who actually made the admission policy in conjunction with the full professors of the department. Other admission committees may have a totally different process.

The graduate schools that I have experience with required a minimum of 3.0 on a 4 scale for a four-yearbachelor's degree. Both the cumulative GPA and degree are on your transcripts. The graduate school may require GRE that have no minimum scores. They also required TOEFL that does have a minimum for international students who native language is not English. If an applicant does not meet the graduate school requirements, the department, not only does not see the application, they cannot even ask for an exception.

The department sorts the applications based on research interests as stated in the SOP and then forwards these applications to the respective research groups. The decision of who is admitted and who is not is made at the research group level which is why I alway recommend that all applicants target a research group telling them what they bring to the table. Those applicants who research interests are unclear, the admission committee has to make a judgment call to see which research group should make the evaluation. These student are at a disadvantage especially if the judgment call is wrong. The goal is to get the best students as possible.

Each research group subjectively evaluates the SOP supported by LORs to determine research potential, the ability to work at the research level. Each research group has a number of openings. The research group decides who is accepted, waitlisted, or rejected. They also say which applicants should get research group funding using RAs. The director of the graduate program determines which accepted applicants should get department funding usually TAs, and he or she then forwards these decisions to the dean of admissions who sends out letters accordingly. When an accepted student declines an admission offer, the next person on the group waitlist is given an offer.

Some research groups may still have openings. If this is case, the department may contacts the applicant who is on the wait list if he or she will consider at different research interest. However, I must point out the students can change research interested at any time; however, RAs are a yearly contact which means a student with an RA may not have funding in his or her new area of interest. This ability to change research groups is why there is funding available all year round.

Most departments have a limit, a quota, on how many students can be in the department, so for a student to be admitted, an enroll student must leave. What this means it is unclear how many students on the wait list will be admitted or at what time they are admitted. (I have personally given an offer with funding one week before classes started.)

If you are applying to a PhD program, you must demonstrate your potential to do original research which is why I always recommend writing a thesis (senior or master’s). You would given an executive summary and cite any published papers (preferably in refereed journals) in your SOP. The reason I say this is because you are being subjectively compared to the other applicants who most likely have demonstrated the ability to do (original) research.

There is no probability to this process because the SOP supported by LORs are subjectively evaluated and compared to the other applicants as I have previously stated. When you are being subjectively evaluated, the evaluation depends on the people making them. Anyone out side of the admission committee and the research groups would not know the criteria for their decisions. Another factor that is also unknown is the number of openings for a particular research group. The percentage for a research group that has no student openings is 0.

Finally my post How to improve my chances to be admitted into a top University that everyone underthe sun wants in gives you some insight as to what I and my other colleagues look for in an application. If you are applying to a master’s, see my answer to Do you need research experience toget into a top CS masters program?

Bottom line: Faculty members view applicants differently. They are looking for the best match for their particular research interests, which is why applicants should be familiar with who is doing what and where.

First off, I wish to thank everyone who has posted and commented in one capacity or the other on this forum. Without you, this would not have been a reality. I stumbled on this forum by chance and at which time, I knew nothing about the GRE or study abroad. Of course I knew that people do study abroad, but I was not too cognitive of the process and all until I got here and was inspired by the various success stories.

Like my fore fathers here, I registered with B.Y Mafit and that was the singular wise choice I made cos everything revolves around them. I attended the free TOEFL and Free GRE classes. Got the Magoosh account, Kaplan Text, Official Guide and other materials given during lectures and group studies. Took the TOEFL classes for a month and the GRE classes for 6 weeks. Though free, they were very very vigorous. Wrote the TOEFL first. I'll share that experience another time since this is a GRE forum. I scored 110 though (There was a guy at Mafit who scored 115. Couldn't beat that target embarassed ). I did not read lots of textbooks. I just used the classes as my main study and did the additional practice recommended by our instructor (Enitan). Since that worked, I decided to use that principle for the GRE and it worked as well.

Wrote my GRE amidst lots of tension. The night before, I could not sleep. God punish tension cheesy . Had running stomach on the day of the exam and I started reciting all the psalms I could munster. grin grin grin . Was great though. The group discussions at Mafit helped, as we were fond of dealing with very difficult analytical questions. My advice is that while preparing, do not scratch the surface. Go really really deep. The more complex questions you tackle, the faster it would be to tackle the easier ones. Also, be true and sincere with yourself. For me, after I registered with BY Mafit, I didnt pick a date till I was well into the lectures and knew exactly what time I needed to be fully ready.

At the end, I scored 164 on the verbal and 162 on the quant. I know of a guy at Mafit (Dada) who scored 166 and 158 respectively. I already mailed my school and I was told I have the chances of getting full funding. I have sent other documents to them prior to this.

Once again, thank you all for helping nudge me in the right path. Now lets wait for the final decision on funding and start fasting so the VO will be nice grin grin . I sent this to Mafit to post but I guess they didn't so I had to sign up to post it myself. My advice for everyone would be to be focused and have a clear target and pursue it vigorously. Also, set aside everything to focus on this. It means a lot and it could change your life story.

Smells fishy. Sounds like you're shilling for Mafit. Only 23 posts to date and in about 60% of your posts, you're basically advertising for Mafit.
Looks like an elaborate lie then..
