The dust raised over the declaration of Anambra State as an oil-bearing state seems yet to settle as some activists have accused the federal government of not applying due diligence in approving Anambra as owner of the oil wells. In a chat with Daily Independent, the United Middle Belt Youth Congress (UMBYC), declared that the Middle Belt is the owner of the Ibaji oil well located in Kogi East of the region. Speaking through its President-General, Abuka Onalo Omobaba, the UMBYC noted that the oil wells in both Kogi and Benue are in the Middle Belt region. “The government of Anambra State cashed in on the long period of neglect of this people by the Kogi State government and surreptitiously approached the Federal government claiming to own part of Ibaji land which contains the oil wells with the subsequent recognition of Anambra as an oil producing state by the federal government.” UMBYC through Omobaba mentioned that the group “shall mobilize the Ibaji Youth to keep full scale vigilance over this part of Ibaji land containing the oil wells to prevent any counter claim to the oil wells by Anambra State.” He added that UMBYC would “liaise with other organization especially in the south-south and south-west for necessary advice and support in order to prevent the illegal transfer of oil wells in Ibaji land to Anambra State.” The UMBYC, however, noted that should the federal government commence oil exploration in the Middle Belt region as it should, it must give 13 percent derivation to the people like the Niger Delta people enjoys currently. The group further opposed the “cattle grazing bill” which is before the National Assembly for consideration, stating that any attempt to take over what rightfully belongs to them forcefully and thereby using the National Assembly as a ruse, would be seen as total declaration of war on the Middle Belt people. http://dailyindependentnig.com/2012/10/middle-belt-not-anambra-owns-ibaji-oil-wells/ |

This report was from 2012 October! We have passed this stage as the oil blocks and wells including the ongoing refinery project have been confirmed to be in Anambra 100%. Orient Petroleum has been lifting crude from there while Anambra will start receiving its 13% derivation any moment from now.. 8 Likes |

chinolization: This report was from 2012 October! Middle Beltans gave an ultimatum in October 2012 and they are fulfilling it every step of the way. I read that Anambra people have been driven out if their ancestral homes and forced to live in concentration camps. What a shame! Is this not the same Middle Belt Ibos say they will form alliance with to create buffer zone against North and West? Wetin happen to Ibo ultimatum, e don expire? Na wah for you people. 1 Like |
