Fellow nairalanders, i was having an argument, i want to know if its advisable to attach dat i was a Union Leader or an Activist while in school as an Achievement.

Feel free to include it.

Adding it to ur CV will not signal anything bad. From the way I see it, it will show that you are response and capable knowing that you were once entrusted such position of responsibility at an undergraduate level which is indeed a good fit.
I included almost all the position of responsibilities I have held in the past on my CV. The team I coach at undergraduate level even while serving. I also include the various forums I served as administrator on Facebook. I did all that because I'm a fresh graduate with little experience. Guess what, I do get job invite for almost all the job that I have applied for so far.

One more thing, if you must include it on your CV please endeavor to highlight some of your salient achievements while serving in that capacity.

A unionist wannabe and a potential trouble maker in the work place? At interview you will be treated as a curiosity. You automatically disqualify your self from the position sought.

No HR manager would like to be accused of giving a job to a potential liability. That in itself is a dent on the recruiter's CV. You become an ebola to recruitment.

Who cares about your union activities in school? Feel free to add it, but i will advise you dont. Most people would look at you as being an aggressive person as that is what most people think about unionism. I was a union activist back in school and it doesnt reflect in my CV.

I will have to tell you that, that post was an achievement for you, adding it will add more than 60% positive value to your CV and maybe some negatives, depending on the HR.

my experience - I was given the best tenant of the year in my hostel by my landlord when I was in University, I wrote it in my resume and is part of what make me got my ever first job. The Manger of the company was part of the people that interviewed me, as he was checking my resume, he saw "Best tenant of the year" he laughed and said tell me what and what make you got that and how big is was the hostel, I told him 30 rooms and hardly to see a room with one student, some are even 5 in a room so we were 60 students living there averagely, he said Wao!!! so out of 60 people averagely you were giving that at the end of year party, other HR just kept nodding in positive meaning, its funny but i got the job on the spot though with some other qualities.

I guess i'll av to weigh ma options then.

I only added these two to my C.V under "awards"
- Best Departmental President by the school Alumni
- Best corps member (male) in my local government by NYSC.


....and they are working for me in securing good job, including postgraduate admission. I see them as an achievement, but you must specify how that experience has added to you.

Being a union leader alone is not an achievement, it's the positive things you did while on that position that counts. Go ahead and state that. It's what I would look for as a recruiter as you could translate those positive achievements to my company if I hired you.

Just like the poster before me said, being a union leader is really no achievement. What you need to do list out what you achieved as the leader, and not just listing it out but putting figures to your achievements. E.G One time union leader in a school of over 5000 students, led a delegate that liased with the school authorities leading to a 15% reduction in the school fees blah blah blah. Something like that.

I love this, it is encouraging to a fresh graduate like me. Pls can you send a sample of that your C.V to my email sulaimonidowuu@gmail.com. Cos I have a lot of extracurriculum achievements I would like to include in my C.V apart from good graduating grade as my strong points.

Op, please add them o... After my graduation I didn't put mine until it just dawned on me late last year dat I have to put them on my CV because if u check many recruiters' requests apart from ur qualifications and experience, they keep telling u as someone who has good communication skills, interpersonal relationships, leadership qualities etc. and if u participated on such qualities then what stops u from telling them dat u wia ones like this and that. Bro add them up if possible certificate was given to u for such office also go wit it during interview for confirmation.
