As negotiations continue between the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and Super Eagles Coach, Stephen Keshi over the possibility of extending his contract, the NFF says it will make a contingency arrangement for a caretaker coach to lead the Super Eagles to Rwanda for the September 6 qualifier for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier should the talks remain inconclusive before then.
A member of the three- man committee set up by the executive committee of the NFF to negotiate with Keshi, Deji Tinubu told newsmen in Abuja yesterday that already the two parties are having a cordial and fruitful negotiation to ensure that the loopholes that were noticed in the first contract were taken care of.
Tinubu said already Keshi had responded by accepting the offer to coach the country again and that very soon the NFF will furnish him with contract proposals which the former national team captain is expected to study and make his own position known before returning to the federation.
“I want to say that we are on track with our negotiations and Keshi is also enthusiastic to coach the Super Eagles again and that is why we sent him our notice of intent last week and by Monday this week he responded positively. Very soon we will send him the proposal that will contain his salary. As we speak, all that you have been reading about salary are mere rumours. What we want everybody to realize is that you don’t have to force negotiations we have to be careful so as to eliminate the defects of the earlier contract”.
He said efforts would be intensified to ensure that the deal was concluded before the continental qualifier against Rwanda but in a situation, where that was not possible, the federation will make a contingency arrangement to lead the national team to Kigali.
“For now we have not selected coaches that will hold the team in an interim capacity but very soon we will be coming out with an arrangement just in case we were not able to conclude with Keshi before September 6 because that match is very important to us as a federation and we must play it regardless of who is in charge”.
Keshi has been severally reported to have demanded among other things, an increased salary, an official accommodation and a car, as well as the recall of his former assistant, Sylvanus Okpala.
