CONVULSION MYTHS AND FACTS:

MYTH: During a seizure the child might swallow his/her tongue and suffocate.
FACT: It is physically impossible to swallow your tongue because your tongue is fixed. To prevent suffocation, let the child lie on his/her side to free the airways.


MYTH: Clenching of the teeth during seizures lead to death.
FACT: This is medically incorrect, but rather forcing a spoon into the childs mouth, might cause dental hazard.


MYTH: Exposing a child to a mirror causes convulsion.
FACT: Convulsion in kids is usually caused by birth defects, low sugar and sodium level. High fever can also cause convulsion by making the brain discharge abnormally.


MYTH: Applying onions to the childs eyes or putting fire to his/her feet will bring the child back.
FACT: Convulsion is harmless in itself, unless there is an underlying problem. A convulsion wii normally stop by itself just make sure the child is breathing properly.


WHAT SHOULD I DO? :

1) Loosen all tight clothing especially around the neck. If possble leave only the diapers on.

2) DO NOT PANIC. Your baby needs you to be clear headed at this point.

3) Ensure proper breathing. Lay the child on his/her side, convulsion usually causes vomiting and if aspirated can go to the lungs and cause problems.

4) Ensure the enviroment is hazard free. Never try to forcefully restrain anyone having a seizure!!


Finally STAY WITH YOUR CHILD THROUGH OUT THE DURATION OF THE SEIZURE. If the seizure is not over in a few minutes, seek medical help. And for those in the FAITH a prayer can go a long way.
