Whether we like it or not, the world of computing has moved geosciences ahead and is continually doing so.

This is a thread for experienced, budding and aspiring NL geoscientist who wish to share or exchange softwares, data/knowledge with fellows for free.

If you are good with Petrel, Geoframe, Decisionspace, Jewel Suite, Kingdom Suite, OpendTect, Techlog, Jlog, Geolog, etc.

Please share with printscreen so that other can learn.

Questions, discussions, etc.

Post resources and software links.

Sorry, not been available!

Here is the link to one of the largest resources on geosciences - geophysics skill area mostly!

http://library.seg.org/

Type anything from geophysics to chapters of books, u' may just be in to find what you are looking for!

OpendTect has a free version that you can download online from dgb earth sciences(dgbes).
I have petrel 2009 that I can give for free( its too large to upload here)
I can also give surfer 8,10 as well as winglink free.
I have Hampson Russell, petrel 2010, opendtect, wing link, surfer 8 & 10, geolog, interactive petrophysical and geographix installed on my system. I can as well allow you use these free.
I have lots of seismic/well data that I'm willing to give free also.

In addition, if you have a good system ( fast processor and large space), I can give you a virtual machine that will enable you installed windows XP. The advantage of this is that some of these softwares run better on XP. It also helps to avoid licence clashes in some cases.

I got lots of textbooks(PDF) on near surface, seismic etc, videos are also available and I'm willing to give anyone interested free.

I'm in Lagos and we'll meet at Unilag if you happen to be interested.

That's my workstation at home.

I could really use your help here and if u dont mind I can drop my contact here in a private message if u want, im also willing to process ves data for free for anyone... cant wait to work with real data (I read aplied geophysics)

Great information! I was able to download the OpendTect software from the website you posted but don't have real data to practise with. What do you think i should do? Also, could you please send the softcopy of the textbooks(PDF). my e-mail is danben4life@yahoo.com. Thanks

These softwares are heavy stuffs in GB. Books are at least 45mb and can't be sent by mail. If you are in Lagos, try to make out time and come to Unilag. You'll get more than you need.

Opendtect comes with a training data. The data is tuned to do everything that opendtect can do.
If you try to do some things like neural network or fast Fourier transform using any other data on the free version of opndtect, you won't be able to do it.

Unfortunately, the least data I have is about 650mb, I can't send that by mail. As I told others, if you are in Lagos, try your best to come to unilag. You'll get all you want free.

I no dey collect a kobo from you.

Many thanks to all who have been participating in this forum.
For Petrel Users, here is a tip on fault mapping in Petrel

It is known that faults are better illuminated in a disco cube but better to structurally smoothen it before extracting disco cube, A time slice of the disco cube could be used to see you faults as it been mapped

see the following screenshots from a collapsed crest structure area
1. Disco timeslice
2- Disco timeslice with fault mapped -don't mind the fault not smooth.

Steps to achieve
1. Load the seismic data
2. right click on the survey and scroll to volume attributes - select structural smoothing, if the data is bad you may want to gain it with Trace AGC before structural smoothing
3. Right click on the new virtual structural smooth cube and scroll to volume attributes, - select variance edge attribute. Check the realize button at this stage to create a new realized disco volume, if you don't it will take time for our timeslices to load.
4. Insert a timeslice on the new volume, you should see something similar to the thumbnail above depending on the fault pattern
5. If the colour is not good enough, you may adjust the colour template.

If any question let me know.
