Myths About Colostrum. Are They True? by Mamagidi(f): 10:07am On Aug 13, 2014
That yellow milk that comes out of the breasts during the first few days after a child's birth has many sentiments about it. It's no news to us, especially in these parts of the world, that the yellow, orange or gold liquid that come out of the breast is evil! It is a pus, dirty, a waste product from the days of pregnancy, can cause major disease for the newborn and so on... But are these stories real? Does that liquid actually have a negative effect on my baby?

No! That yellow milk called COLOSTRUM has more benefits than you can imagine. Even if you've heard that it has benefits, it has a lot more than you may know. The amazing facts about Colostrum include these;

-Colostrum is produced by the breasts during the pregnancy period and continues for the first few days of breastfeeding.

-It is low in fat, rich in carbohydrates, protein and antibodies that helps your baby stay healthy.

-Even though it is for a few days, it is the best first food for your baby and very easy to digest.

- It has a laxative effect, aids your baby to easily pass out stools.

- It helps in the excretion of excessive bilirubin (an orange-yellow pigment formed in the liver by the breakdown of haemoglobin and is found in every one's stool).

- Colostrum prevents jaundice (excessive bilirubin can cause jaundice).

- Works as a natural and perfect vaccine, which has a higher concentration of immune factors than mature milk.

- It produces an antibody called IMMUNOGLOBULIN A (IgA) that protects the baby from germs especially in his lungs, throat and intestines.

- Provides a large amount of living cells that defends your baby against harmful agents.

- Foreign substances can easily penetrate into a newborn's intestines, it is the role of the colostrum to provide a barrier that prevents these substances from affecting the baby.

-Colostrum produces leukocytes, protective white blood cells that help fight disease-causing bacteria and viruses.

- It also stimulates and helps the increase of mature milk as it gradually disappears.

Therefore, those myths about the evil of Colostrum are not true. Giving your baby this natural goodness is very important as well as frequent breastfeeding generally. Breast milk prevents engorgement and increases your child's immunity against bacteria and viruses. So Mum, give your baby the best! wink
