From antiquity, conflict has been an unavoidable part of human existence. However, the manner of attempts at its resolution determines wether a society survives or is teared apart.
The current move by FG to sack Resident Doctors in Nigeria is one of the most ill advised actions to be taken by GEJ's govt. The following reasons will buttress the point.

1) Resident doctors perform over 90% of all the works in any federal hospital, so it is almost impossible to do without them.

2) The Medical Officers(MO) to be employed cannot perform the work of residents. For example, most surgeries in the hospital are performed by these specialists in training. The MOs dont have the requisite skills to undertake such, except we have to build more morgues and cemeteries.

3) As expected, the NMA rejected the sack, ordered the consultants not to resume duty, and stated that the unconditional reinstatement of the residents will be the only basis for further negotiations on the ongoing strike. What then has the FG gained?

4) FG probably intended to threaten them to bow to her wishes. But of course, the Minister of Health, who is a Dr, should have known that by reason of their training, Drs will never blink an eye on such intimidation. A Dr, by the necessities and requirements of his training and work, is as bold as a lion(just like a military officer). Some Nigerians mistake this for arrogance anyway.

5) Within these few days, an average Nigerian Dr would've enquired what it would take to travel abroad. Boy, na greener pastures o! That internal sack memo, released by the ministry of health, has triggered a reaction for massive brain drain of Drs which may be worse than that witnessed during IBB's regime. A consultant recently advised me to "start thinking of travelling abroad, they've messed up medical practice in Nigeria". My guys don bigin dey jack for USMLE and PLAB.

PLEASE, YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THE FOLLOWING...

1) There are less than 3000 consultants in Nigeria.

2) Over 4000 Nigerians are consultants in the UK. Really? You haven't seen anything yet.

3)25000 (twenty five thousand) and more Nigerians are consultants in the US. You can google it!

4) The ratio of one Dr to patients is 1/5000 in Nigeria. One of the poorest in the world.

5) Over 200 out of 1000 children born in Nigeria die before they are five years old

6) Though Nigeria accounts for less than 5% of world population, 13% of world's maternal motality(deaths related to pregnancy) occur in Nigeria. This is largely due to lack of skilled birth attendants.

In saner societies, the knowledge of the figures above, which are but only a few of the numerous poor indices bedeviling the health sector, should have constituted a national emergency. Our leaders dont give a damn, after all, even after leaving office they can always travel to Germany for medical trips. Even in resolving the strike, a more astute and tack method should have been adopted intead of this 17th century approach.

The truth still remains that the resident doctors will be recalled without any condition, except the govt decides to sell her hospitals which have been grounded for neally 2months. So, why cause unnecessary hoax which will drive many of your Drs away.

Do you know the number of Nigerian Nurses in the UK and US even in T&T? for the fact that they will migrate is not the reason why they should be misbehaving . they can not hold a whole country in ransom threatening to migrate if disciplined. They should go afterall they have not been working for the past 2 months and we are still here

In as much as I won't want to join issues with you on this subject matter, it is needfull to reiterate here that even though the drs have been away for over 6 weeks, you have not stopped consulting them in weird places like on the phone, in eateries and food joints or even in traffic hold-ups.

This Isreal-Gaza style altercation between the NMA on one side and a JOHESU-FG tag team on the other will only leave collateral damage within the innocent patients caught up in this imbroglio.

The govt. Should rethink and rescind its earlier directive to terminate the appointments of a group within the ranks of the NMA who have been maliciously singled out for vilification.

So to "discipline" them, all a reasonable govt could to was to make a pronouncement which will NEVER stand but only add insult to injury. Your family had better got enough money for private hospital bill or for Indian hospitals, cos needing a doctor is an integral part of human need.

As for the Nigerian Nurses in UK and US, it is on record that almost all of them work in institutionalised homes- old peoples' homes and mad peoples' homes, and not in proper hospitals.

Background

The large-scale emigration of physicians from sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) to high-income nations is a serious development concern. Our objective was to determine current emigration trends of SSA physicians found in the physician workforce of the United States.

Methods and Findings
We analyzed physician data from the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Health Workforce Statistics along with graduation and residency data from the 2011 American Medical Association Physician Masterfile (AMA-PM) on physicians trained or born in SSA countries who currently practice in the US.

We estimated emigration proportions, year of US entry, years of practice before emigration, and length of time in the US. According to the 2011 AMA-PM, 10,819 physicians were born or trained in 28 SSA countries.

Sixty-eight percent (n= 7,370) were SSA-trained, 20% (n= 2,126) were US-trained, and 12% (n= 1,323) were trained outside both SSA and the US. We estimated active physicians (age ≤70 years) to represent 96% (n= 10,377) of the total. Migration trends among SSA-trained physicians increased from 2002 to 2011 for all but one principal source country; the exception was South Africa whose physician migration to the US decreased by 8% (−156). The increase in last-decade migration was >50% in Nigeria (+1,113) and Ghana (+243), >100% in Ethiopia (+274), and >200% (+244) in Sudan. Liberia was the most affected by migration to the US with 77% (n= 175) of its estimated physicians in the 2011 AMA-PM. On average, SSA-trained physicians have been in the US for 18 years.

They practiced for 6.5 years before US entry, and nearly half emigrated during the implementation years (1984–1999) of the structural adjustment programs.

Conclusion

Physician emigration from SSA to the US is increasing for most SSA source countries. Unless far-reaching policies are implemented by the US and SSA countries, the current emigration trends will persist, and the US will remain a leading destination for SSA physicians emigrating from the continent of greatest need.

What Do These Findings Mean?

Although the sub-Saharan African IMGs in the 2011 AMA-PM only represent about 1% of all the physicians and less than 5% of the IMGs in the AMA-PM, these findings reveal a major loss of physicians from sub-Saharan Africa. They also suggest that emigration of physicians from sub-Saharan Africa is a growing problem and is likely to continue unless job satisfaction for physicians is improved in their country of origin.

Moreover, because the AMA-PM only lists physicians who qualify for a US residency position, more physicians may have moved from sub-Saharan Africa to the US than reported here and may be working in other jobs incommensurate with their medical degrees (“brain waste”).

The researchers suggest that physician emigration from sub-Saharan Africa to the US reflects the complexities in the labor markets for health care professionals in both Africa and the US and can be seen as low- and middle-income nations subsidizing the education of physicians in high-income countries.

Policy proposals to address global inequities in physician distribution will therefore need both to encourage the recruitment, training, and retention of health care professionals in resource-limited countries and to persuade high-income countries to train more home-grown physicians to meet the needs of their own populations.

Everybody may be migrating, but not everyone, or better not every proffessional, is actually in demand in the countries of destination

Petrol stations, children's school, police check points... Let them not just see NMA sticker on your windshield! Yet they will come here and say they don't need doctors.
