When I get to office in the morning two of the first sites I open are Nairaland and Ghanaweb. I have a number of sections of interest(Sports, politics, culture,Islam for Muslims and education) on NL, but my only business with Ghanaweb is football section. I go there not to read about Ghanaian football, but to know the latest about Nigerian players/national team! I have applied for membership registration but not yet given. If I take NL as Nigeria's largest and most visited online discussion forum, and Ghanaweb as Ghana's, then i'll like to state the follwoing interesting observations from my experience in both forums: 1,Nigerians are far less concerned about S/Eagles the way Ghanaians are concerned about their national team: On Ghanaweb, the majority of the topics are on their national teams, and interestingly, there are more topics on Super Eagles on ghanaweb than NL. They follow their national teams with passion, opening scores of threads on the performance of their players in Europe and NT. 2,Nigerians are far more concerned about Euro clubs: The bulk of the topics here discuss Chelsea,Arsenal,Man-U,Madrid,Barca etc. These clubs are also discussed on Ghanaweb but not as ubiquitous as on NL 3,Nigeria-Ghana rivalry: This is what makes ghanaweb tick. Nobody cares here about Ghana or any other country, but on Ghanaweb, 99% of the topics, if not directly on naija, contains digression on naija. There are a couple of naija guys there, that defend naija, and the bashing used to be very funny and interesting. They call Yakubu 'fatkubu', obi called 'obenchi' etc. There is hardly any topic that doesnt contain a statement/post about naija even if the discussion is ARSENAL VS MAN-U, before the thread reaches 3 pages, Nigeria would have gotten mentioned!!! 4,Ghanaweb football more current: Maybe more of the forumers there have unrestricted access to internet than us here, threads are started for latest football happening on ghanaweb than here. 5,More Active Their football section is more active and busy than here. A hot football topic reaches 10 pages within hours of opening, but I doubt if they are better follower of football than Nigerians because there are millions of other football-following Nigerians out there that don't join online discussion forums. 6,419 Adding that this is the synonym for naija on ghanaweb is restating what everybody knows. It comes in different styles--419ja,419geria!!! They don't trust anything Nigerian. They labelled the newcastle bid as Nigerians in action again(419)-----kai, den fear Nigerians no be small!!! |

Don't mind them. They are always hating on us. I guess it's the legacy of the "ghana must go" saga and a bit of envy and jealousy. |

ife-eco-06: I think it has something to do with patriotism and faith in your countries.Nigerians have long lost all hope in the country (thanks to our corrupt officials) while the Ghanaians still have a little bit of sanity in the way their country is run. The allegience to foreign clubs is only a sign to show that Nigerians are sick of the mess in Sick`adua`s govt and the NFF. |

I find the rivalry very amusing. Little Ghana versus big brother Nigeria. |
Re: Football: Between Nigerians And Ghanaians by Jarus(m): 1:37pm On Oct 24, 2008 |
Seun: I also find the rivalry amusing. . . . . . . . . that's why I go to their site to read about what they are saying about Nigeria. The latest they are talking about is how Nigeria embarrassed Africa by deciding to drop the U-17 world cup hosting, which just a university can host!!! PS: So versed are these Ghanaians about Nigerian football that you see them quoting/referring to Nigeria's matches of the 80's and 90's as if they were played yesterday. Den sabi naija football pass many of us here. It was from a ghanaweb ghanaian forumer that I read that Nigeria played a match in ibadan in 1991, and NFA forgot jerseys in Lagos. So Eagles had to wear trouser, and beat B/faso 8-1, it was Finidi's first match for senior national team. I never heard that ooo. Pls anybody here, is it true? Or just a blacmail. . . .but the way the guy recalled it, it looked like truth |

If someone is always talking about you on their fourms whether good or bad it means you are important. You should be worried when they stop talking about us. it means we are slacking. |

they dont only hate nigerians in soccer, just generally, and they know that naija is where it is happening, they just wanna use any small opportunity to show they are better than us, even if ghana beat nigeria in soccer, than doesn;t mean that as a whole naija is not better than gghana |

@ Topic I am not suprised at all. I schooled in ghana so I know. That thing wey naija do them (Talking about GHANA MUST GO) still dey pain dem enter blood. Every single thing that has to do with Naija is a big deal in Ghana. I was fortunate to be in Ghana during the last nations cup and watched the Ghana vs Nigeria match were we lost to them. MY GOD I couldnt believe my eyes, the whole town was on fire. Everybody was in a party mood, the pubs, joints, restaurants, roads, name it was alive with celebrations. It was like they had won the damn cup. It trancends just soccer, our politics, Entertainment industry (Talking bout movies and music), food, lifestyle are all issues of interest to the average Ghanaian. I wouldnt be suprised if the next xenophobic attack on Nigerians would come from Ghana. |

@Ife-eco, It is true!!! NFA forgot eagles kit in Lagos while the match was in Ibadan so the cut the track suit into shorts for them to play We beat burkina 7-1 not 8-1 I think yekini Grabbed a hat trick. What of NFA that forgot players passport in Ibadan when we were to play an International Under-17 against Benin republic. They drove to Lagos to get the Passport and wanted to start the match by 7pm but the Beninoise refused and they got a walk over over Nigeria that was how Benin refused to play the match. I met one Ghanaian in Chicago and the first thing he said after I told him I was Nigerian was that Ghana beat us at The nations cup!!! When I sat Him down and told him about Ghanaian football he kept quiet. From Abdulrazak's era, Abedi,Tony Baffoe, Tony Yeboah, Prince opoku Polley, Ibrahim Ali, Edward Ansar, Odartey Lamptey, Augustine Ahinful, Asare brothers, Daniel Ado, Bayern's Osei Kuffuor, Charles Akunnor, Isiaka Awudu, Emmanuel Bentil, Dan kamara, Joseph Ansar, Ibrahim Tanko. He hung his mouth in awe. I told him we naija know so much but we don't make noise like them. He is one of the NDP coordinator in North America. Can You believe he invited me to join the NDP North America for the Attah Mills for president campaign and that he would introduce me to JJ Rawlings. I just told him off that i am busy!! |

Its no big deal, Ghanians are obsessed with anything Nigerian. From my personal experience in Ghana, they love and loathe us with equal measure. About their passion for football, when the Accra Hearts of Oak play, the whole town is at a standstill, almost like a carnival, people dressed in their own versions of their team kit, I think that is one area we lack in Nigeria, patriotism for our brands. |

Re: Football: Between Nigerians And Ghanaians by cyril3333: 3:09am On Oct 26, 2008 |
lol, this is a funny cus im new here but longtime ghanaweb member. im proudly ghanaian. so you naija people think we hate you?, lol, i wouldn't say hate at all. Infact even that ghana-must-go story, which you think we hate you for, not many young people in ghana know that story o. me myself i only heard about it from a nigerian about 3 years. I had never heard about it before, and i doubt any of my friends knew about this either. the reason it seems we are always hatin on you guys is because the average ghanaian thinks all nigerians are crooks. and we have a couple of funny sayings to this effect. Like one of them is "God is not a nigeria man" , lol, it sounds funnier in our local dilect. People say this when something bad happens to a bad person, like a thief gets hit by a car, they'll say, "serves you right, goes to show God is not a nigerian man", lol. This is no fault of ours though.Everywhere around the world, nigerians have this similar reputation. Unfairly i think. This is something you the young generation of nigerians have to work on. As for the football, yeah there is a bitter rivalry mainly from the ghanaian side because we considered ourselves to be the best in Africa, especially west affrica, which we were in the 50s and 60s, but in the 70s and 80s, nigerian football started to rise, at the same time as ghanaian football was in a bit of a slump, and we were not happy about this so we relish any opportunity to remind you guys who is boss. These kind of sports rivalries always arise everytime there is a sort of "change in power". This is what still persists to today, eventhough Nigeria is no longer the dominant football force in Africa. Egypt and Ivory Coast took over. And to the cameroonian, I really doubt there is any rivalry between ghana and cameroon. If you pick 10 ghanaians, you'll be lucky to find 2 who know where to find cameroon on a map. I've never heard anybody mention cameroon on ghanaweb. We usually talk about strikers we'd like to have in our team like Drogba and Adebayor. So maybe a few people mention Eto in that category, but even then, not in the last couple of years i don't think. So Don't work yourself up for nothing. 1 Like |

cyril3333: now isnt that peculiar that an average ghanian thinks every nigerian is a crook? enough to make it proverbial. people know about the nigerian corruption et al; but its so outrageous in ghana it earned itself a thread here. with that, thats one place- maybe the only place- i wont like to be. cyril3333: petty and arrogant. an average nigerian does not even care about ghana. we see ghana as very little threat in everything; so we dont spend most of the days of our lives diggin out the numerous dirty news about ghana just to make us sleep better at night. cyril3333: cameroon is a place to fear and respect in everything- thats if your hateful rivalry is "pure". il conclude that ghanians are just jealous and blindly complexed. i saw a thread where someone was hating on india for putting a man on the moon; saying that ghana, as powerful and influential in africa as she is, should have stepped up to achieve that for the whole of africa long ago. Im like "GHANA? wot d hell! makes them think they are better than everybody else? maybe their journalists have been deceiving them or something, with their "ghana soon to become a first- world nation" headliners. |
Re: Football: Between Nigerians And Ghanaians by salamander(m): 6:54am On Oct 26, 2008 |
I find it very amusing as to how some have taken this topic, lashing at Ghana in particular. I'm a proud Ghanaian. At the same time very proud of Nigeria. My grandfather was a Nigerian. What people tend to forget is that about half of West of African population have some Nigerian blood in them. Nigeria was and is a great country. But it take the citizens to make it great. Nigeria being branded a 419 country is nobody's doing but themselves. How can a country with over 150million people be corrupted by only about 0.1 percent of the population? For the records, it is Ghana that first 'sacked' Nigerians from their country in the infamous Aliens Compliance Order in 1970. So as to the saying that the 'Ghana Must Go' incident is still painful to Ghanaians is neither here nor there. Ghanaians have a way of forgetting a painful past and forging ahead for a hopeful future. There are still people in Naija that are very bitter about the Biafra war. Come to Ghana now and see how many Nigeria business are flourishing. Nigerians with genuine intentions are doing businesses without any intimidation. It is worth mentioning here that the current Nigerian Ambassador to Ghana is doing a marvelous job in selling a positive Nigeria to Ghanaians. Since I joined Niaraland I've enjoyed it here. My main interest is in the satellites section. I'm also a regular Ghanaweb reader and so with other interesting sites on the web. I want to urge my fellow brothers in Nigeria to put together their acts and make Nigeria a greatest Nation in Africa. Has not been for corruption, with the resources Nigeria has both in natural and human resources, she will not be where she is today. Just count the number of checkpoints one has to cross from Ilakoji to Central Lagos. Ask any traveller who comes to Accra if it is the same thing from Aflao to Central Accra. Ask any Nigerian living in Ghana when was the last time his power went off? We are not perfect, but we are doing our best to keep the country sane. As I keep mentioning, it YOU and I, the citizens that makes or breaks a country. Now back to football! Ghana is small but it has been able to hand Nigeria some of the painful defeats in the history of soccer. It is always a nerve breaking scene when Ghana and Nigeria clash from under 1 to over 99. The important thins is that there is always a good entertainment. And for the records, Ghana has had great players from Nigeria origin who have played even to the National level. Those worth mentioning here are Shittu Muda (late 70's) and Ola Bodey (late 80's), who both played for Accra Great Olympics and were called the National side. And there are still others now who are playing in Ghana (I wont mention their names so you can snatch them, lol) In conclusion. Nigeria is a great country. It is up to YOU to make it that great by exhibiting a positive image. So anytime Nigeria is mentioned you say, YES!! 1 Like |

now isnt that peculiar that an average ghanian thinks every nigerian is a crook? enough to make it proverbial. people know about the nigerian corruption et al; but its so outrageous in ghana it earned itself a thread here. with that, thats one place- maybe the only place- i wont like to be.Now that you mention it, i agree. Maybe the reason ghanaians came to view nigerians as crooks in general can be traced back to the nigerians asking ghanaians to leave their country. I imagine our fathers at the time must have been pretty appalled by this action seeing as ghana helped nigeria gain independance after we had already gotten ours. But i maintain, this is not a generally talked about thing in ghana. Like i said, i myself never heard this, not even from my parents, until only 3 years ago. You make it sound like it was a natural disaster in Ghana and we are still talking about it till today. Which is just not the case. How many ghanaians were there anyway?, from what i hear, mostly women, most of them pregnant, and children, because they was a faminine in ghana at the time. Nobody is asking you to come and live in ghana, but there are many many many nigerians now living happily and peacefully in ghana. No trouble at all. I don't know any ghanaians who will leave ghana today to go and live in nigeria. for what? petty and arrogant. an average nigerian does not even care about ghana. we see ghana as very little threat in everything; so we don't spend most of the days of our lives diggin out the numerous dirty news about ghana just to make us sleep better at night. lol, you make it sound like the average ghana spends his days thinking about nigeria. This couldn't be farther from the truth. The original poster in the first was severely exagerating because i don't see which treads he is talking about when he says we are always talking about nigeria, I can't even mention the name of one local nigerian team except enyimba because they beat my local team painfully once.I mean, where do you get this idea that we in ghana hate nigerians? It is more a feeling of indifference, same as for you guys i suspect, except when it comes to football, at least for us. But that's it. Like i said, there a few jokes here and there about nigerians being criminals but that is all over the world. Nigeria is only ever mentioned in Ghana when there is an armed robbery. Then a few ignorant people start mentioning Nigerians and Ivorians. Even then our governments are usually quick to put a damper on such notions. There used to be a time when every prostitute in Ghana was thought of as being either Nigerian or Ivorian. That is no more because the government actively worked to remove such notions. Ghana is a very very peaceful country. Ask anybody. What i find is that nigerians are so quick to jump on anything to say "aah, see, they hate us" . Maybe this is some sort of subliminal inferiority complex? Like one time i read on here about some nigerian passenger being asked to leave a BA flight for interfering or something and people on here saying the nigerian president should ban them, ban them. they hate us. You think BA cares if they can no longer fly to nigeria?, who looses more? il conclude that ghanians are just jealous and blindly complexed. i saw a thread where someone was hating on india for putting a man on the moon; saying that ghana, as powerful and influential in africa as she is, should have stepped up to achieve that for the whole of africa long ago. I'm like "GHANA? wot d hell! makes them think they are better than everybody else? maybe their journalists have been deceiving them or something, with their "ghana soon to become a first- world nation" headliners. This is very much a case of nationalistic pride. Every country has it. When i was younger and first moved to the US, one of my biggest shocks was to find out how much nigerians thought of themselves. Many of my nigerian friends in university usually referred to nigeria and the greatest country in Africa and would passionately argue to this effect, I was like Nigeria?, wtf?, because this was completely different from the the view we in ghana have of nigeria as a country. This is nothing new, it's just nationalistic pride. For example i often see people here describing nigeria as the best country in Africa. I'm sure many african countries will laugh at this. And maybe you in nigeria "fear" cameroon?, because they are close to you or something?, but no us ghana at all. We don't think cameroonians trump as in anything. anything at all. Not football either. Like Cameroon?, why? I know most nigerians think of cameroon as their football rival, but as i explained to you before, this is because cameroon displaced nigeria as the top football nation in africa in the 90s. I doubt the cameroonians "fear" nigeria. Rather they absolutely loathe the Ivorians especially Drogba, because they feel he challenges Eto'o as the best african striker, and ivory coast in general is the best african team today. At least on paper. With us ghanaians, if cameroon beats us in a game, we chalk it down as they were better than us on the day, or we didn't play well. Not that they're better than us. at all. This whole tread is pointless. Because you can never get any ghanaian to believe nigeria is a better country. Same way nigerians think of ghana as insignificant, from what i hear on here. So lets just leave it at that. 1 Like |
