The Sultan of Sokoto Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, yesterday condemned the attack on the UN headquarters in Abuja. The Sultan described the act as abominable especially as it was performed during the holy month of Ramadan.

The Sultan in his Sallah message to the Muslim Ummah in Nigeria, yesterday said: “We, seriously condemn this act while commiserating with those who lost their property and condoling the families of those who lost their lives.

“We hereby call on the Muslims not to allow themselves to be used by our enemies in achieving their desired goals. We should not allow them to cause us to commit acts prohibited by our religion. We, therefore, call upon all those involved in this nefarious act, to fear God and desist from committing this grievous act,’’
The Sultan continued, saying “While we condole the families of those who lost their lives, we would like to reiterate our call on the Federal Government to as a matter of urgency, investigate the incident and bring the culprits to book. It is high time for the government to prevent any future recurrence of such acts of violence in this country,”

Sultan Abubakar advocated that all resort to peaceful means and dialogue to resolve the problems of the nation.

Although the Sultan in earlier comments on issues concerning the Boko Haram has always advised Muslims to shun violence, the Sultan has not previously condemned the acts of violence carried out by the Boko Haram. In his previous comments which were made at a pre-Ramadan meeting in Kaduna the Sultan who doubles as the President of the NSCIA and the Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) absolved the Boko Haram of the violence being attributed to them saying “Islam is a religion of peace,” He also said “you have taken note of what I said about violence in the North-east. I did not mention Boko Haram because most of the violence is not caused by boko haram.So we have to ask ourselves why there is violence in the northeast? Those who cause the violence, who are they? The government must fish them out and say look we know you are the cause of this thing from day one.”

The Boko Haram is a sect that seeks to enforce the use of Sharia law throughout Northern Nigeria and have been known to attack politicians, government buildings, law enforcement agencies and religious leaders (even Islamic religious leaders) who oppose the sect.
