Sarah Dessen wisely said: “There are some things in this world you rely on, like a sure bet. And when they let you down, shifting from where you’ve carefully placed them, it shakes your faith, right where you stand.” Closely observing the 2011 elections, I was particularly not interested in voting even if I was eligible to. I’m the type who would rather listen to what a wide range of people had to say about a topic or person before drawing my inference. The blind could vividly see, the deaf could also clearly hear the plights of the people of Ogun state. Everyone was tired of the Gbenga Daniel’s Administration. Left, right and center was all bad news and unhearable tantrums by the former governor. My heart sunk, my spirit prayed for change, my soul yearned in hope, my body agitated in anger and fury. It was Gbenga against Governor Amosun. Still green in my cerebral cortex was that moment of jubilation that evening, I just woke up from sleep to the news that Senator Ibikunle Amosun is the Governor-elect of Ogun State. I picked up the JAMB form where I chose to study at Olabisi Onabanjo University and glared my bulbus oculi on it with joy properly triturated with hope. He promised to reduce OOU fees if elected. That meant my single mum wasn’t going to cough out too much money to get me educated. I just sensed a feeling that everything was going to be alright, only if I knew. Fast forward 2014, it was a different game on the streets. Partisans and market women commended the governor for the road repairs.Taxi drivers also sang his praises. Indeed, it was immense and worthy of praise. As my good friend likes to say, “Governor Amosun has a penchant for bridges”. Space won’t permit me to begin to list the roads and bridges, but it’s there for us to see. Well done sir. Senator Ibikunle Amosun becoming Governor was also good news to Olabisi Onabanjo University. If no one would admit, I humbly would. First, the corrupt VC was done away with and Prof Saburi Adesanya was installed. This alone spelt complete sanity to OOU's environments and academics. But then with all these, I still had to put up with the fees. Having to pay 204,500 naira in 2011 was hard to swallow but since no one was talking about it, I kept mute. The next session had to take 212,000 naira from my mother’s purse and I could barely imagine how I had been slapped. Alexander Pope correctly said, “Blessed is he who expects nothing, for he shall never be disappointed”. To cut the long story short. Fast forward July 2014. I already started classes for the new session, and with the heavy fees sitting on my mind like a rich man relaxing on his couch I always put Divine provision in my prayers. Suddenly, on getting the news on the fees reduction to take effect next session by Governor Amosun, I wasn’t moved. I knew it was time for elections and he would need to score few political points, I passed it over and considered it as a speculation. I wasn’t going to be disappointed again! OOU SUG then announced a 2-day boycott of lectures before going to negotiate with the governor, all efforts proved abortive. Then I thought just like Wande Coal sang ‘Shey na like this e go dey dey?’ My heart rejoiced at the peaceful demonstrations by the Ifade Onisegun led SUG, to demand further reduction and immediate implementation. A paroxysm of hope held my hands. Once again, You came out to claim you weren’t aware we were in our first semester, asked for a week and promised to set up a committee to see to that effect. I was happy again, lectures resumed normally, high expectations met with hopeful myopia. Only if we knew! The greatest shock came on the expiration of the 7 days you asked for at Abeokuta. You ordered the Governing council of the school to close down the school. You also sent loads of Policemen into the school environment to arrest student leaders. I have the following questions to ask sir, was this how Sir Obafemi Awolowo treated you when you were in school? The third governor of Ogun state who built this university, Olabisi Onabanjo in his grave must be colossally saddened by the way you have played down on his sweat and toils to make sure Ogun state youths get quality and cheap education. The labours of our heroes past we always sing, shall never be in vain! These great people gave you free education, why have you, like King Solomon decided to put the burden on us? Yes, the question comes, you were not the one who hiked the fees, but the truth remains you promised to lighten our burdens if elected. You promised we weren't going to pay anything above 50,000 naira if elected. Why have you reneged on your promise? Why have you ordered the arrest of our student leaders to have us helpless and hopeless? Why would you treat Ogun state youths like some pack of cards? Sir, your Rebuild Agenda at the 2011 election had five cardinal points, first of which was ‘Affordable and Quality Education’. Where is the affordable and quality education sir? You have deceived us and have gone too far. The voice of the people is the voice of God! Let us get this straight sir, History has it about the Indomitable spirit of OOUites. If there’s any school that’ll quiver or tremor at your tantrums, trust me sir it’d never be OOU. Ask Olusegun Osoba, ask Samuel Ewang! Moreover, I’m sure you were moved at the crowd you saw at the last protest, that’s why you called it opposition sponsored. Hehe, you haven’t seen anything yet! We know all you care about is the election next year and we are ready to play it dirty. We would show the world how you’ve destroyed the sweat of Sir Olabisi Onabanjo. Fire gunshots at us sir, we don’t care! Arrest and imprison us sir, our CVs won’t be complete without it. Let the threats come in, we’ve had enough and have come too far to compromise. We’ve crossed the rubicon! Deprive us of whatever, it's part of the struggle. Sir, I honestly submit you need to have a rethink. The Proactive decisions made by Gov. Fashola has been recorded in the books of history and how you resolve this issue might just determine where history will place you. Moreso, I'm starting to get the hibis jibis of your irreparable decision. Just know ONE thing at this crucial stage sir, we do not accept the closure of our school as you have acted within the confines of your power. You must have read about John Castor, the student leader who said 'We either revolt or die!'. We won't stop! We won't bend! On Affordable and Quality Education we stand and for as long as possible, ALUTA MUST CONTINUA, VICTORIA ASCERTA. Concerned OOUite. Rx Robinho 1 Like |

Suddenly, on getting the news on the fees reduction to take effect next session by Governor Amosun, I wasn’t moved. I knew it was time for elections and he would need to score few political points, I passed it over and considered it as a speculation. I wasn’t going to be disappointed again! OP I don't want to speak for the Governor but I think the students need to understand some few things. It was during Daniel PDP led administration that the fee was hiked if I'm not mistaken. The Government of Ogun State may be facing challenges adjudsting to the new approved fee as that will definitely affect the State's budget for this year, hence, the taken off from next academic session. The Lagos State Govt for instance had to send supplementary budget bill to Lagos State House of Assembly to cover for the "shortage" in the government revenue that will be caused by the LASU fee reduction. Ogun State is nowhere as rich as Lagos state neither is her internal revenue commensurate to Lagos State, they probably don't have the benefit of making up the huge difference except they seek external funding ie borrowing which may not be good for the State as at now. The probably seek to have it take effect next year to provide ample time for budgetary planning and which to the government is feasible. As a young person from a humble family, I understand your positions but you should further probe as to why the government decided to make the fee effective next academic session before crucifying the working government of Amosun. Whatlyf: i understand your positions but you should further probe as to why the government decided to make the fee effective next academic session before crucifying the working government of Amosun Brother, I understand your position too. Instead you should probe why he promised we weren't going to pay anything above 50,000 naira if he got elected. Once bitten bro, twice shy!!! They know how to adjust the budgets if they want to. Also probe why the governor deceived us last week. Why he asked for a week to look into our demands but instead used that one week to plan the closure of the school. |

adeoladrg:in my first comment I posited that I won't hold brief for the governor. But permit me to say that Amosun's first promise of N50,000(though still high) was nothing but a political statement and it is highly condemnable. It is clear that he had no idea(as at then) and had no plan on making the 50k feasible as at 2011. It is very shameful to say the least. Howeber, as an incumbent that has been in power for over 3years he has no excuse. Please just give him that benefit of doubt(and read my first comment). Leaders say things in campaign that they had no idea of.. Like obama that said hed close guatanamo bay in his 2008 campagn but till today the Prison still operates. As for the school closure, it may be done to forestall breakdown of law and order that may arise from protests. Remember the protest in lasu that almost cost the life of the VC. Leaders sometimes takes proactive measures for the good of the citizenry. |

" The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.- Martin Luther King, Jr." Fellow Oouites, Let me start by saying my not being on line recently is due to damaged device of mine. Without wasting time, I want to encourage you all for your dogged, rugged and peaceful spirit in this noble cause so far. The premise of shutting down the school by the Government is shallow and thoughtless. Let it be known that no other institutions in Ogun State apart from our school agitates for reduction in tuition fee from the beginning, because we pay the highest within the State and outside the State. Let me state this again, if we are just starting 2013/2014 session, and any reduction is made, logically, it is expected that it should take effect from that 2013/2014 session unlike other institutions within the State that are already ending that session. However, what we see is grand conspiracy between the Government and some student' leaders of other institutions against us. Let me implore you all, collectively we starts, collectively we must stay as leaving the school will amount to giving in to the Government tactics. We must remain resolute on our position no matter the intimidation and victimization. Contrary to paid media houses, our agitation and protest has been peaceful even when some paid Mapoly students came to attack us and vandalized some properties, all to run down our peaceful agitation. I implore you all to be calm as consultation is ongoing. Let me end by saying, he who see the truth and desire not to accept it will always have excuse, no matter how flimsy it is. This perfectly suites the external influence the Government is panting our demands. We are getting there! Thank you. Aluta continua ! Victoria ascerta! E soleto E africa! Signed. OOU Students Union leaders seem to be deceiving themselves in their agigation against Governor's declaration. . There are ten (10) tertiary institutions in Ogun State, of which all were concerned in this reduction issue. All other 9 institutions agreed with Governors decision. Only OOU students are shacing shadow. . Why compare lagos with Ogun. Lagos has 5 tertiary institutions while Ogun has 10. Internally generated revenue of Lagos is 400% more than Ogun's. . OOU students union leaders are greatly disappointment to the institution. . If Governor did not deceide to reduce the tuition fee, wont you pay your usual exoritant fee and graduate. . You are all ingrates because Amosun was not the one who cause the hike. . I call on all their parents to take precaution, talk to their kids because there is no gain in Aluta, and to avoid any violence that could lead to lost of future leaders 2 Likes |

^^ I'll take you as one of those Mapoly students, your words seem sensible. But you're bereft and devoid of enough information. Of all the 10 institutions in Ogun state, no other institution pays above a hundred thousand naira, so isn't it logical for them to smooch their grateful knees on the ground in appreciation? OOU pays between 200 to 300 thousand, medical students pay about 350 or thereabout. 40% reduction will amount to how much? Do the mathematics! Traditionally, public schools were structured such that it'll be affordable to the poor. Our primary and secondary schools still maintain that structure, it's only our university that has been manipulated. So don't come here to spew trash!! It'd amaze you to know ASUU is in support of this struggle.. Amosun dropped the bombshell some months ago, telling the university to fund itself.. It's there for you to see! So quietly go back to your polytechnic and mind your business! |

Its so sad OOU students have to pay through their noses o. At 400level in 2008, I paid fourteen thousand and five naira as school fees. Fast forward to 2014, its a different story entirely! |

Ogun state has 2 universities and 7 tertiary institutions. It is almost impossible for the state to fund these institutions except if we want them to be managed like glorified secondary schools. Tertiary education cant and wont come cheap. t is what defines the educated from the ordinary. Awolowo never promised free or cheap tertiary education. Infact the FG struggled to fund University of ibadan in the 50's and had to beg the public for endowment fund. The FG had to seek support from Rockefeller and Ford foundation. That was why other universities were carefully established in batches, first as campuses of UI. Except the state is financially bouyant like Lagos whichk can raise supplementary budgets, increase taxes and levies to raise IGR it will be a difficult task. We live in world where the reality is not to far from us, people dont want to pay taxes and levies, student dont want to pay fees, FG hands peanuts to states and does not allow them control their resources we will continue to suffer. Someone must pay for it. The way out is to establish student loans and corruption free bursary and scholarship system. Any aspirant that promises reduction in fees should explain the funding process. Aregbesola has proposed a regional universities to be jointly funded by all south western states..The idea of states owning two universities cannot work without it being expensive except for those who are comfortable with standing in lecture halls, defecating in the bush, queuing up to fetch water, reading with candles and lamps, poor laboratories and libraries with no books and "worthless certificates" Ogun state will have to take a huge loan to finance these schools. There is no miracle at sight.....except the house Approves a supplementary budget, the reduction can only be captured next year. 1 Like |

It is good to be properly informed. This is the plain truth, I was in ago iwoye to check on a few things (I aint a student thou). It was around 4pm wen the socialist called one of the excos to inform him abt the meeting with amosun. They said the meeting didn't start until 8pm on friday! Amosun actually begged them to understand the situation, but they threatened cause trouble and havoc. Right in their presence, he called the school authority to close the school even before they got to ago iwoye so as to prevent commotion! That's a fact!! All the lies abt mobile police are pure lies! I am still enjoying myself here! I was even as MAP (a popular parlour) this evening and no police harassed anyone! |

So, because I mentioned mapoly as a yardstick, as an OOU student, ur brain don miscalculate Now listen up, av mentioned ds in another thread, 'after medicine and its relative, nad law, OOU offers nothing'!! Be rest assured, if MAPOLY is offering those courses, they will beat u hands-down! Most of the mapoly students who crossed over to universities are leaders. Ask anybody in OOU or other universities. I am a witness of that in UI. Mapoly still offers the best course in masscomm, fst, slt, architecture, building tech, their account students na die because before u even finish ND, u cld av started ur ICAN! Go ask others. Did u even knw they now offer pharmacy and micro biology? That ur yeye school na school? See, I maintained this: after medicine with it's relative courses and law, nuttin dey OOU! Nothing to envy! In UI, an average students wished for a laptop, not to watch movies and pose or do yahoo like you do in OOU, butt for research! An average student has a printer of his own. No be police dey pursue student with laptop for OOU? U cant deny that because I dey see things. Av been arrested twice on a bike and they search my laptop and wen I showed them my ID card say I no be student na den dem mellow! I repeat, OOU no be school. OGD increased the fees then and there was not a single protest, but now Amosun reduced it, they are not satisfied. Someone even said how much is 40% reduction? I laughed.
