Gabriel Batistuta Reveals He Asked Specialist To AMPUTATE His Legs by femmy2010(m): 10:03am On Sep 01, 2014
[b]Argentine legend Gabriel Batistuta has opened up about his retirement from football - revealing he asked a specialist to amputate his legs.

The ex-Fiorentina striker, now 45, hung up his boots in 2006 after a glittering career with club and country.

However he has revealed his retirement hasn't been an enjoyable one due to the excruciating ankle pain he felt.

Batistuta told TyC Sports: "I left football and overnight I couldn’t walk. I wet the bed even though the bathroom was only three meters away. It was 4am and I knew if I stood my ankle would kill me.

"I went to see Doctor Avanzi and told him to cut off my legs. He looked at me and told me I was crazy.

"I couldn’t bear it any longer. I can’t put in to words just how bad the pain was. I looked at Oscar Pistorius and said, “that’s my solution".

Batistuta has since had screws inserted into his right leg - a considerably less drastic treatment - and admits he is now able to get around without too much trouble.

"My problem is that I have no cartilage or tendons. My 86 kilos are supported by bones alone. That's what generated the pain.
