Before I proceed with this thread, I'll like to seek for indulgence from the political analysts in the house, pardon my naivety or ignorance that you might notice while reading this. I've always been involved in science right from my basic education days, in fact I'm a Forensic Scientist in the making, so I don't really know much about politics or anything relating to it. But recently a thought crossed my mind, I asked myself if nigeria is a failed state(I've always heard some of my friends arguing about this, but I've never contributed as I'm not well equipped to do so). According to an online site, a failed state is one who is perceived to have failed in basic conditions and responsibilities of a sovereign government, although there's no general consesus for the definition. Now looking at Nigeria, according to wikipedia Nigeria is on number 17 of the failed state list on Alert. When we talk of basic conditions of a state, I believe they are food, jobs, shelter and security. What I don't really understand is that must the government provide all these(save security) for the masses? Even if the govt try to, will it go round? I think we should stop this argument of whether Nigeria is a failed state or not and reason on what we can do to improve the country. China has a population of over 1billion, the govt is not actually sourcing for every citizen, but the citizens themselves have gone into industrialization, manufacturing and other things that have rapidly improved their economy. I don't know if my notion is wrong, maybe I'm being myopic about the whole issue, as such, I'll need more intellectual contributions to this thread. Thanks

Yes,
Nigeria is a failed state.
The institutions of government are no more working.
When individual/communities take over the role of the government when that government has failed to fulfil it's obligation ,it is called a failed .
Just like Somalia,Nigeria has evolved into a comglomeration of clans and unions;with each one guarding his /her own patch and looking after his/her own interest.
The period leading to the civil war in Somalia looks very similar to Nigeria's.
Let me remind you that Somalia used to be second largest producer of oil and gas in Africa ,and still has some of the largest reserves on the African continent
The dysfunction did not start today (in fact ,it started before independence.
The terminal nature is only just becoming visible.

Nigeria is not a failed state.
In fact, Nigeria does not have the capacity to be a failed state.

Reason? Nigeria was never a state in the first place.
Nigeria was a mirage of a white "winch" called Mr. Luggard.

Rephrased your question to:

is Nigeria a failed mirage?

Answer is. YES!

No. Nigeria is not a failed state, i think the western media houses have a very gross misconception of what the term failed state is. A state being a sovereign law making and governing territory, must have had all the element of government and law making in total disarray for it to qualify as failed, take for example Somalia

It is unfortunate that Nigeria has shown all symptoms of a failing state especially with sentiments, regional politics and loyalty to tribal affiliations which has been consistently shown by some region and almost all region in this country.

However ,it is still within salvage if the major actors can come together ,after all the oil fields in the Niger Delta are still breathing which has been the original uniting factor,Once the actors(criminal elites of the ruling class) can come into agreement on how to loot while maintaining some sanity and thereby appeasing our gullible and dumb population we could then get to a stage where the people would become more enlightened and peacefully transit to a better system. But if they continue bickering over who gets what and some criminal gangs like Mend,Boko Haram et al gets upper hand then I'm afraid we will fail woefully and the phrase 'failed state' would become an understatement.

What I'm trying to say is that as long as there is money to be shared we won't fail yet, unless internal wranglings among-st the political thieves of Nigeria invites in other not so conventional thieves like Boko haram and Mend et al into the party then we are done for it and of course the common people becomes the collateral damage.

Oh? In what way is the Nigerian Government Sovereign in Banki? Or in Bama? Or in Bara? Or Damba? Or Dikwa?...
Which part of Federal law is that is being enforced there right now?

This question is like asking if the pope is a Catholic.
For a country to be a functional state, it needs to meet the following criteria:
1. Security for its citizens both home and abroad.

2. Free quality compulsory education for its citizens to secondary school level at least.

3. Uninterrupted power supply at least 90% of the year.

4. Free quality health care for all its citizens like the NHS in the UK or a private health insurance scheme like the system in USA.

5. Good transportation network such as multilane motoways and rail links connecting all the major cities in the country.

6. Affordable housing and welfare system to help the unemployed and many more.....

you have misconstrued the whole concept of law enforcement. The fact that nigerian forces are still having a stand against the insurgent is proof enough that our system of law enforcement is still working. And so far every territory of the federal republic is still internationally recognised as Nigeria

A state cannot be said to be failed unless the state does no longer have sovereignty. Nigeria have a goverment with many law enforcement agency to enforce this laws, therefore Nigeria cannot be call a failed state

Nigeria is a failed state...

The term failed state is often used by political commentators and journalists to describe a state perceived as having failed at some of the basic conditions and responsibilities of a sovereign government. In order to make this definition more precise, the following attributes, proposed by the Fund for Peace, are often used to characterize a failed state:

loss of physical control of its territory, or of the monopoly on the legitimate use of physical force therein, erosion of legitimate authority to make collective decisions an inability to provide reasonable public services

Common characteristics of a failing state include a central government so weak or ineffective that it has little practical control over much of its territory non-provision of public services; widespread corruption and criminality refugees and involuntary movement of populations

These people have not stolen cars. They have taken administrative control of a significant portion of North Western Nigeria. SOLDIERS are not law enforcers. Soldiers are war fighters, and they are necessary because there is a civil war within the borders of "Nigeria".

You don't have sovereignty because you've not only lost control of your physical border, you've also lost territory to terrorists.

You can no longer protect and defend your country and sovereignty and the total collapse of military and it's inability to defend and protect sovereign Nigeria means Nigeria is no longer a sovereign Nation.

We've basically hit all the marks that determines a failed state...

Ve taking time to go 2ru all ur definitions and explanations. Success and failure is only awarded at d end of a well considered examination. I dont tink Nigeria has gotten there yet. As a matter of fact we are still developing. So it is too early to award marks. For those who are good at comparing wit other developed nations, y not challange urself lyk does in china did and see if ur success will nt attract some added development to our great nation. B4 u cast ur stone of judgement, ask urself if u ve done anytin to make a change in ur country. It is only wen we all ve failed to make a positive change in our country or wen all out best yields no better fruits, den we can ve d right to say 'Nigeria is a failed state'

Yes indeed. The simple explanation is that nothing is working as envisaged during independence. Nigeria is a failing state.

According to wiki ----
A failed state is a political body that has
disintegrated to a point where basic conditions and
responsibilities of a sovereign government no longer
function properly. Likewise, when a nation weakens
and its standard of living declines, it introduces the
possibility of total governmental collapse-------

i believe that all the symptoms of this definition can be seen in our dear country Nigeria. The sovereignty of the government is in decline with respect to her citizens deference. The standard of living continue to fall down the cliff as the year counts down. unemployment, uproar frm secessionists, tribalism, nepotism, crime and other social vices has become the norm in Nigeria today.

@Opp u pointed out china in ur assertion to debate the position of Nigeria in the court of failed states. i will like to affirm here dat one of the fundamental obligations of government is to make available basic amenities to her citizens. good roads, good healthcare services, good education- in form of schools and vocational institutions, good electricity supply, etc. all of these are made available in china for over a billion people. but same cannot be said here in Nigeria. in fact our limited amenities are in decline year in year out.

just imagine what nigeria will become with jst 15hr of daily regular supply of power. Nigeria is a very strong example of a failed state or let me say a failing state
