jabberjawz:Hi Jabberjawz, I took some basic and advanced training in Gis this year organised by some reputed group in my school... I was really exposed to some key applications of Gis... I still don't feel satisfied with the training i went through. How do I move on to become more proficient in it And how can I get a cracked version of Esri Arcgis..?? Am I on a right path and how can I model my career around Gis and what are my prospects...?? Am just in my 3rd year geology.... Am looking at environmental geophysics for my masters... Please I need your advice |

Peterjosh: Well it's cool to take the first step which u have done by getting acquainted with what GIS is all about.....an MSc in GIS will broaden ur horizon about GIS.....it's one thing to know how to use d software & another thing understanding d principles of how d different modules in d software operate, what they do & why they do.....FYI d software is just a tool while d fundamental knowledge of GIS operational principles is key. Modelling ur career around GIS depends on u....ur career goals & dreams....what u want for urself....but I will always say...do not limit urself to d oil & gas industry........I started with d seismic industry....but today I work for d biggest INGO in d world...av gone as far as d ECOWAS, UN, even got an offer from a saudi based company....not bragging but if u are good @ what u do.....these Kats will look for u irrespective of ur location. To be an MVP in todays GIS world.....be ready to play with writing scripts....or programming.....u can't escape from statistical data analysis as well and of course d present trend(B.I) Business Intelligence.......u must keep up with d ever changing trend...because GIS evolves by d day.....so to stay relevant...u must be up to date with d trends in d industry. Ur analytical ability must be up to d task....because most time.....u as a GIS techie serve as an aid to critical decision making. As for d software u can network with friends in ur sch....or u can hookup with d guy dat sells software...i think in d nairaland career page to help get & install it for u. Also practice more,.... push urself to learn new things.....i invested heavily on internet data/bundle just to learn what i needed to learn...there are lots of resources on the internet to learn from......and yes i messed up in a few interviews back then.....not cos i wasn't prepared....but I didn't realize how tough d competition was..... but each experience was a learning process......so it's ok to make mistakes but take at least a lesson from each mistake. Hope this helps. 1 Like |

@jabberjawzThanks a bunch bro... That was more than helpful and revealing.. And, how can I apply Gis knowledge in the field of geology??. That was my main aim of delving into it.. As I have said, am hoping to major in environmental geophysics.. Would Gis give me an advantage in this retrospect....?? Am about to start learning java and I will check out some software shops... Thanks again.... |

Peterjosh: D advantage with GIS is dat u can comfortably switch between job roles....as it serves as a bridge between information technology /computing and geoscience........there are diff GIS roles...ie GIs Technician....deals with seismic survey geocumputing/working with AUV/UAV. GIS analyst.....works basically with d dektop/ pc & primarily concerned with mapping / analysis GIS developer.....does d programming dirty work GIS server administration......manages d organizations GIS network infrastructure GIS specialist....specializes in all aspects. .....as for programming.....why do u have to start with java?......u can start working with d note++ editor, HTML,HTML5, PHP......java can come in later.....dats if u really wanna ace d programming aspect..... Environmental geophysics is not a bad idea but u have to look properly @ d industry trends & how best u can fit in between job roles. |

jabberjawz:Hmmmmm.... Alright Sir ... Thank you very much Sir.. Am so grateful..... . Currently we are being taught java in my school as part of our courses...And I want to key into it before I try out other languages.... And sorry for my Oliver Twist approach , with all these said, am I on the right path?? What do you mean by switching between job roles?? |

Re: GEOSCIENTIST & PETROLEUM ENGINEER's HAVEN - Be Empowered, Enriched & Enlightened by jabberjawz: 8:56pm On Aug 14, 2016 |
okikiosibodu: Truth is....they really don't recognize such certification in d industry......if its not an M.sc or ESRI certification........an M.sc will pave d way for u.......but ur additional skills will stand u out from d crowd........that was why I asked what kind of certification we talking about.....!.....but its okay to upgrade your skills through such avenues(GISK & d likes) 1 Like |

Are you interested in mining companies or mineral resources? Are you undergraduate, graduate or post-graduate student, GIS for Geoscientists will be ideal for you! Do you have a project at hand difficult for you? Do you wish to own a mining site?

ifoundmyperfect, Greetings to you. I'm having an issue on decision. I got a scholarship for MSc Petroleum Geoscience abroad. I'm thinking of University of Adelaide in Australia and also Royal Holloway University in the UK. University of Adelaide resumes in February 2017 while Royal Holloway University resumes in September 2017; I'm not engaged with work at the moment. I need your professional advice on whIch to choose considering reputation; curriculum and other matters arising. My target is to enter the Petroleum Industry after studies. To me, Australia seem not to be a popular destination for Geoscience. I will appreciate if you can check up the two courses up and give me holistic review. Looking forward to your response. P.S: Please treat as urgent. |

niyogeol: Here is response to this, and it's gonna be short... Go to Australia if you have been given admission there. Australia is and has always been on high demand for geoscientist. Most of their citizen dey shy away from the profession. I know of a few persons way back that were given employment + work permit immediately after their Msc. Although those guys were quite exceptional academically. I don't expect you to do any less. (i'd be here to offer whatever assistance you may need). Unlike USA wey be say even if na 102% u get, as long as dey no fit find an American citizen qualified for the job, nothing for you! UK is okay, but get ready to be kicked out immediately your program is off. Except you wan dey play hide and seek or sabi other means... All the best bro! |

ifoundmyperfect:Thank you once again for your time. The M.Sc at Australia is a year program but the post study visa requires one to have studied for nothing less than 2 years to qualify for it. At the moment, geoscientists no longer have a place on the skilled list of Australia. I got in touch with some Nigerians in Australia and they advised I look at Canada, UK or USA as geoscience is more rooted in the aforementioned countries than Australia. Due to the benchmark of the scholarship grant, I will require over #4m to cater for upkeep while in Australia. Looking at cost, I have applied to a top school in Canada while I wait patiently for admission. I will appreciate if you can mail me |
