REVEALED: Obasanjo's Son Was Shot While Running Away From Boko Haram by adino(m): 7:33am On Sep 12, 2014 |
The son of former president Olusegun Obasanjo, Lt Col Adeboye Obasanjo, who was shot and wounded by Boko Haram militants in a fight in Adamawa State Monday has been discharged from hospital, officials at the Federal Medical Centre said in Yola yesterday. However, it emerges yesterday that a colonel in the Nigerian Army is feared killed in the current offensive against Boko Haram insurgents in Adamawa state. The officer, whose name was simply given as Col Yakubu, was reportedly shot and killed in the same operation in which Lt Col Adeboye Obasanjo was wounded over the weekend. The family members of Col Yakubu who have become aware of the incident are now said to be in Yola, concerned that their son may have been dead already, Daily Trust reports. They are said to be asking for true information about the colonel and requesting as well that his whereabouts be disclosed to them dead or alive. When contacted yesterday the Defence spokesman Major General Chris Olukolade said, the officer in question is considered Missing in Action. Obasanjo’s son was injured in Bazza, northern Adamawa State during a failed bid by troops to re-take the town from Boko Haram insurgents. He was taken to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) where he spent two days receiving treatment. “He had a minor injury and he was treated and discharged,” a senior official said. “He received the best attention that we could possibly offer and he responded quickly.” Security concerns also contributed to his early discharge, the source said, disclosing that it was the military top brass who suggested that he should be discharged and flown out of the state. The Information Officer of the FMC Malam Adamu Dodo confirmed the story, stressing that both his speedy recovery and the security factor contributed to his early release. “There is also the issue of his safety given the attention the story has been getting”, he said. The case has been receiving huge public attention and high profile personalities have been visiting him. Meanwhile, additional details have emerged on how the former president’s son was shot and wounded by the militants. It was gathered that Lt Col Obasanjo and some other officers were overwhelmed by the insurgents because the soldiers failed to obey the orders of their commanders. The unnamed source said when the soldiers were confronted by the insurgents in Bazza, their commanders ordered them to fight but they failed to do so effectively. As soon as the insurgents opened fire on them, they ran without standing their ground to fight back as ordered by their superiors. He said that was why some of the soldiers were killed and others, including Obasanjo’s son, were injured. He also said Bazza, Michika, Gulak and Madagali are still under the firm control of the insurgents. A leopard cannot remove its spots. Like his father, he intends to evade battle only to resurface after the towns have been recaptured from BH to claim victory. Going by the media attention already, and being the commander of his unit, he would stand before the glitters of the press to receive the 'instruments of surrender' from the displaced insurgents. #I'm ready to return to battle, Obj's son. Like father like son: cowards “For instance, he went to inspect Colonel Iluyomade, but when he got there, there was shooting. He quickly got into his jeep and ran away. “He was shot in the buttocks while running. A general will be shot in the chest, and not in the buttocks,” said the army general, who is set to launch a book titled The Tragedy of Victory: On-The-Spot Account of The Nigeria-Biafra War In The Atlantic Theatre, his own version of the war experience aimed to counter some of the ‘lies’ by Chief Obasanjo- RTD Gen Alabi Isama 2 Likes |

The OP and the people that wrote the daft article are very silly. Why should an 'un-named source' be trusted as the witness to what happened? Even if the source is correct, why should it be a crime to retreat when you are overpowered and outgunned? It is terrible military advice to give a blanket order to 'stand your ground'. You think the world would not be a different place if the British Army had not evacuated from Dunkirk and had chose to stand and fight to the death back then? In war in an urban environment, you can take fire from multiple angles, especially when highly mobile forces using hiluxes and light cars can easily carry out flanking action. Getting shot in the buttocks or back does NOT mean you were shot while fleeing. This is not 1918 with static trenches. This is 2014...where you will be easily shot in the back by concealed snipers. I would not expect an Army engineer to be extremely heavily armed, anyway...or for soldiers to be suicidal by nature. 7 Likes 1 Share |

What I am yet to fully grasp from this whole drama is why/how an army engineer presumably of an high rank as stated, will lead a platoon(instead of a battalion)right into an enemy stronghold? what happened to the infantry officers? Whether he ran or not is not the crux of the matter...except folks here want to make a silly joke out of something as terse as this. 1 Like |

if he was shot in the buttocks then he was facing the opposite direction where the bullet was coming if he was facing the opposite direction of the bullet then 2 things are involve (1) either he was retreating to a better vantage or (2) he was retreating to save his life so as to fight another day therefore in any of the above scenario, the fact still remains that he was running away from action. In conclusion - It is proved beyond reasonable doubt that Col Obasanjo was running away from an action that he couldn't handle. Therefore, he ran from action despite orders to stand and fight to the last man standing. AS A COLONEL, HE IS EXPECTED TO GIVE COURAGE TO HIS MEN BY STANDING AND FIGHTING TO THE FINISH! It is proven beyond reasonable doubt that HE IS A COWARD AND DESERVES A COURT MARTIAL! QED! But sha! na Nigeria and na northrn Nigeria - it is not worth dieing for! 2 Likes |

The report only said the gentleman and other officers were overwhelmed because the soldiers refused to fight and ran and not the officers that ran! It was because the soldiers refused to fight that they were killed and others injured according to the report. And it didn't specify where he was shot. Some people are still carrying on the civil war beef over to 2014. I even read that obasanjo said he nearly lost his dick. Someone running won't be shot at the crotch but at the butt. If this report is true which I suspect it is, it confirmed the claim and reservation of UN of the army's capability for onward operation in mali then. Who would feel safe knowing your allies would flee and leave you alone in the thick of battle. As it is now, the officers too would have little confidence going to battle fearing their troops may dis obey command and allow them all to be easily decimated. |

nwaanambra1: if he was shot in the buttocks ...Or he could have been shot from behind in a flanking action? ...Or he could have been hit by a ricocheting bullet, rebounding off a hard surface? ...Or he could have been shot from the side and the bullet went across rather than into his buttocks? ...Or he could have been leading his men into a tactical withdrawal in face of superior firepower? ...Or as a valuable Army corps Engineer, he may have been leading his unit - which typically will not engage in frontline combat - to the rear? Ignorance kills, my friend. 2 Likes |

There is nowhere in the army in the world where any soldier is wounded and treated fittingly that he is nt reinstated into the field. As far proven healed, he should go back, or else if ppl are picked out like this there will be no soldier left or willing to fight and face the war. The others there are not goats or fools son. He Obj is nt a royalty other than a former looter of our common nation's wealth who should be checked and ought to be brought to book. 1 Like |
