FG to sign Mambila Power Plant contract October. - Biggest Power Plant In Africa - To Produce 3,050 MW September 22, 2014 by Everest Amaefule, Abuja President Goodluck Jonathan has given marching orders to authorities in the power sector to conclude all necessary arrangements to sign the contract for the construction of Mambila hydro power plant in Taraba State. Minister of State for Power, Mr. Mohammed Wakil, disclosed this at a rally for Jonathan in Gombe, according to a statement made available to our correspondent in Abuja on Monday by Special Assistant to the Minister (Media), Olawale Rasheed. Wakil said, “The president has broken the jinx of the Mambilla hydro dam which is worth about $7bn. The dam is to generate over 3000 Mega Watts and it is about the biggest on the continent. This project has been on the drawing board since 1970. This president has given marching order for the signing of the Mambilla hydro dam by this October. “The Kashambilla hydro dam has reached about 95 per cent completion. This is in addition to the new transmission lines across the zone. “We are pushing ahead with the 330kv transmission sub-station to be located in the region. And the Federal Executive Council has just approved another transformer for the state. This is the first time an addition to the transmission capacity of Borno State is being made since 1976.” ...The Mambilla power project had been on the drawing board since the 1970s but in 1985 was planned to consist of 2600MW capacity. The contract was awarded to Sunrise Power in 2003 but this was later revoked, thereby prompting the company to go to court. The legal process stalled the implementation even though a new contractor was awarded the job. Following years of litigation, the government has now integrated Sunrise into the project and the project will now consist of three dams – Nya, Samsum and Nghu with interconnecting tunnels and a total generation of 3050MW. Given the new arrangement, Sunrise Power had to vacate all its suites to enable the project to begin. The Debt Management Office had in 2007 reported that the Federal Government had secured a credit facility of $1bn from the Exit Import of China to finance the Mambila power project. Meanwhile, the Federal Government has confirmed that the gas supply has been restored to most power plants in the country except Olorunsogo following the calling off of strike embarked by oil workers. http://www.punchng.com/news/fg-to-sign-3050mw-mambila-power-plant-contract-october/ 26 Likes 2 Shares |

Op stop spreading fake info, Mambilla power is not the biggest power project in africa. the Kenyan govt just sign a contract with China to build 5000mg power station even DRCONGO is building the biggest hyddro power station in africa. dude we are celebrating medeocrity in this country when smaller and less rich contries are doing more. yes Gej is doing his best to stabilize power which we thank him for that 14 Likes |

I hope this is a PPP project. Where will Nigeria get $7 billion dollars to waste, when it could build a brand new high speed rail from Lagos to Abuja. 4 Likes |

cjrane: I hope this is a PPP project. They'll build with taxpayers money, then turn around and privatize to their cronies for little or no money. This is the same government that sold off power generating assets.. They should be investing in modern transmission grid and get rid of the worthless and obsolete century old grid. Of what uses is generated power if at the end of the day you can not effectively transmit it to the end user. This is putting the cart before the horse.. 12 Likes |

arresa: The govt IS investing heavily in transmission facilities. Again, more criticism and wild assumptions with zero research. Oh, and the national grid is nowhere near a century old. There was no grid during colonial rule. Our national grid is barely 40 years old and is being expanded not dismantled. 19 Likes |

ROSSIKE: Why not just educate me with facts or anything documented about the so called heavy investment in transmission facilities? instead of the little story. To my understanding, the transmission system was outsourced so is the Nigerian government doing the investing or the company it was outsourced to? |

This will be the final blow to darkness in Nigeria if. . . The co-financiers China's Export-import bank are well known for these kind of projects in rail in other african countries, New 5 intl. airports terminals in Nigeria, & even their own tens of mega-hydro power dams constructed to spec. on time with strict fianace from a consortium of banks in china- dams in china which were only started few years ago & successfully exectuted. Please they should repeated same feat in Nigeria with This Mambila & the ongoing 700mw zungeru hydroplant also by the chinese- sunrise power please comply. @ROSSIKE so the pèstt disturbing you above does not know FG has hands-off power generation & distribution since last year privatisation, FG's 10 new generation stations NIPP(plus kaduna powerplant) and hundreds of distribution sub-station extension across Nigeria is their last stint there- private investors takes over that section & many have started work like Geometric which has completed its Aba powerplant. FG still invests in transmission even though there is a concession with Canadian Manitoba, transmission contracts like the Benin- Anambra lines still came up in this year's budget & so on. nkenu: Lets start feeling the impact of the already commissioned dams first befor we start getting excited about this news. Sometimes, its all starts and ends in the front pages of the news peppers. Na wash!!!What power, from which dam ? The dams completed by GEJ in the last few years are only irrigation/raw water dams with catchment area for irrigating large areas & kilometers of farmlands plus hold raw water for treatment & supply to homes of which none of the dams can generate excess of 50mw with the power stepped-down directly to neighbouring communities. Unless you are talking of the Ongoing 700mw zungeru hydro dam in Niger state & kainji/jebba are old ones. For you info. Nigeria's current power comes most often from thermal gas plants like the new 10 NIPP's. Thats why we need the hydro, gas, rewenable energy, clean-coal mix urgently 4 Likes 1 Share |

ROSSIKE:Thats what the Power reform plan is tackling the power transmission towers from akwa ibom to jos plus that of abuja would soon be energized is also part of FG's investment in transmission but transmission capacity is still below 10,000mw, so thats why the power reform plan incorporatores the SUPER-GRID that would wield power to all parts of Nigeria in multiple loops. I hope the transmission capacity increases as generation increases. Anyway thats what Manitoba promised. But ROSSIKE please zero in on articles on PH-Gombe rail and the faster Abuja-kaduna rail lines, thats the emerging area this december- i would love to see it |

SA produces 45% of generated electricity in Africa. SA has the worlds largest coal fired power plant that produces 4,111 MW SA is building another coal fired power plant to top the current world record holder @ 4,800 MW for $805 million But Nigeria is spending $7 billion on a 3,000 MW power plant... + The $20 billion they've spent that gave us nothing but continued darkness.. Sometimes I wonder about Nigeria and the clowns running this country.. 19 Likes 2 Shares |

arresa: I actually thought you were brighter than this. So you actually believe a 4,800 mw power plant can be built for $805 million? Fact is that the $805 million was an initial loan taken out to fund the Kuslie project commencement in SA, and most certainly not the entire amount required, as shown by this list of funders: ''The following institutions are involved in supporting the Kusile Power Station: Multilateral development banks: African Development Bank - $500 million corporate loan, November 2008 Banks: Bank of America - advisory service, October 2010 Bank of Tokyo Misubishi UFJ - 705 million euro syndicated loan, December 2009 Barclays - advisory service, October 2010 BNP Pribas - corporate loan as part of 1,185 million euro syndicated loan Credit Agricole - corporate loan as part of 1,185 million euro syndicated loan Credit Mutuel-CIC - corporate loan as part of 1,185 million euro syndicated loan Credit Suisse Group - helping with the sale of a stake Deutsche Bank - 705 million euro syndicated loan, December 2009 FirstRand Bank Ltd - 705 million euro syndicated loan, December 2009 HSBC Group - 705 million euro syndicated loan, December 2009 JPMorgan Chase - advisory services KfW IPEX-Bank - 705 million euro syndicated loan, December 2009 Natixis - corporate loan as part of 1,185 million euro syndicated loan Nedbank Group - 705 million euro syndicated loan, December 2009 Rand Merchand Bank - 705 million euro syndicated loan, December 2009 Societe Generale - corporate loan as part of 1,185 million euro syndicated loan Standard Bank - 705 million euro syndicated loan, December 2009'' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kusile_Power_Station That must come up to several billions of dollars, no? 26 Likes 1 Share |
